    Funniest one:

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->A German bank robber was arrested recently after a teller realized the robber was hard of hearing and tripped an alarm. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the robber is now suing the bank for exploiting his disability.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Most I hope this person dies a terrible death one:

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->A woman driving a car collided with a man who was riding a snowmobile. The man died at the scene. Since his snowmobile had suddenly cut in front of her, police said she was free of blame. She sued the man's widow for the grave and crippling psychological injuries she suffered from watching the man die. <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Women are evil and hateful creatures with a taste for blood and revenge!

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->A woman was treated by a psychiatrist from March to November 1986, became romantically involved with him, and subsequently married him in October of 1989. After more than five years of marriage they divorced in 1995, at which time the woman sued her ex-husband for psychiatric malpractice and negligence claiming that the romantic or sexual relationship between them started before the formal psychiatric treatment ended. She contended that her ex-husband had breached the standard of care as a psychiatrist by becoming romantically involved with her, and sought general, special and punitive damages. <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    And next year we will see people suing each other for stealing "their" plane in BF2 <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->A surfer recently sued another surfer for "taking his wave." The case was ultimately dismissed because they were unable to put a price on "pain and suffering" endured by watching someone ride the wave that was "intended for you."<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

You realise that 98% of these are utterly fake. People love to bandy about these stories and laugh at how retarded the legal system is. Truth is most of these cases either didn't exist or were thrown out of court on the spot.

Once my girlfriend sees this thread she'll register an account on the forums and rage at you all. She's studying law and these stories get on her nerves.

There's still this guy who's suing a cleaner's for tens of millions of dollars over a pair of pance. It's either a really enduring hoax, or face-in-hands-buryingly real.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->A writer was sued for $60 million dollars after writing a book about a convicted Orange County serial killer. Although the inmate is on death row, he claimed that he was innocent in all 16 murders, so the characterization of him as a serial killer was false, misleading and "defamed his good name". In addition, he claimed those falsehoods would cause him to be "shunned by society and unable to find decent employment" once he returned to private life. The case was thrown out in a record 46 seconds, but only after $30,000 in legal fees were incurred by the writer's publisher.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    my favorite:

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->An inmate filed a $5 million lawsuit against himself (he claimed that he violated his own civil rights by getting arrested) -- then asked the state to pay because he has no income in jail. He said, "I want to pay myself $5 million dollars, but ask the state to pay it on my behalf since I can't work and am a ward of the state." The judge was not impressed by his ingenuity, and dismissed the suit as frivolous.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    [THREAD DERAILED]

Er, actually probably not a good idea if I plan to keep an account here. Anyway, yeah, some of the lawsuits people attempt are pretty ridiculous. And whether or not these are real, they're still funny. The coffee spilling one everybody has heard about was real, right?

I thought the coffee was ridiuclous, then a teacher totally owned me

McDonalds used to superheat the coffee 200 degrees F +

and all she origionally sued for was medical bills from sever scalding, mcdonalds told her to take a hike she sued.

Thats one is actually a legit case.

Yeah that's true. Even holding the Coffee Cup was really hot. When the coffee spilled over her skin, it pretty much boiled her skin.

Remember the people suing tobacco companies for giving them cancer?

    They got their money.

Oh and several states (including Canada) sued tobacco companies for the additional health costs expenditure.

The thing about the coffee was that it was served at about 95 degrees celsius (for those not in the know, that's five degrees below boiling point), and the place had repeatedly been warned that their styrofoam cups had a tendency to disintegrate at those temperatures. This, supposedly, is what happened to the woman. I'd say that serving almost boiling liquid in a disintegrating cup is a good, non-ridiculous basis for a lawsuit.

Edit: Or rather, so I thought. Turns out I can't find any references for this. Hmm...

Almost everywhere except America, "state" means "country" too. Like, "for the good of the state" is "for the good of the country" and stuff like that. America is different because it is, of course, divided up in to states.

Mmm, good observation that I forgot to consider myself. Faskalia, I apologize for my grammatical zealotry. I forget far too easily that a lot of people here speak English as a second language, and that, combined with my good-grammar habits, sometimes gets me into trouble.

Back on topic, a few cursory Google and Wikipedia searches comes up with no information about disintegrating styrofoam. Does anybody have a link to the specific news story, or can clarify this matter?
