    What server? I like it.

They actually use microphone and give info. (which is a VERY big plus in my eyes)
Also the comm seemed semi competent, which is what we might expect from pubs

    hawthorne = no upgrades

a gentle touch in the right place can collapse your enemy. brute force was not necessary here. i usually run without upgrades until someone whines. unless its a 6v6 match of course.

If I'm not mistaken that's how it looks when you view a comm demo

Yeah, anything 'outside' the map just gives you a <b>crazy</b> HOM effect (same as when you look out of a map leak)

    ....

    I thought everybody knew that?

yes, only happens in demo playback. if i were to fraps live-gameplay it would have no graphical defects, but i would also be losing about 50fps.
  • puzlpuzl The Old Firm Join Date: 2003-02-26 Member: 14029Retired Developer, NS1 Playtester, Forum Moderators, Constellation
Are there any other differences between commander live play and demo play? Any differences might help me track the problem down, if they have a common root cause.

I'd be willing to do a special client.dll in advance of any 3.3 release for the movie making community with various issues addressed, if you guys think it would help you in your work. You'd be faced with the annoyance of maintaining a couple of client.dll files, but I'm assuming that's a price you'd be willing to pay for better quality movies.

off the top of my head

    1. texture flicker, already noted
    2. tooltip for commander structures/medpacks - visible in liveplay, not visible in demoplay. you cannot see the green icon that signifies allowed placement or the red icon in demoplay.

i'll look over some demos to see if i can find anything else, but those are the most obvious ones.

I guess the effect of the pillars in satcom on tanith not appearing *sometimes* isn't related?
  • puzlpuzl The Old Firm Join Date: 2003-02-26 Member: 14029Retired Developer, NS1 Playtester, Forum Moderators, Constellation
if it only occurs in demo playback, then it certainly could be related.

As you're already working on it, adding a hltv commander spec_mode would be totaly awesome.

and totally difficult. The commander's mouse movements are not sent to the server and the commander's actual physical position remains in the commchair. We've discussed possibly solutions to it in the past, and Cagey has written a very nice summary of the problem and some possible solutions, but it isn't a straightforward task. But, I agree that it would be totally awesome to get this working. It has always been on my long-term wish list for NS ( as were minimap updates for HLTV, which is now more or less solved ).

I agree, however, as pessimistic as it may sound, I don't think we're going to see (m)any movies which are going to utilise the features enough for them to be worthwhile. Pessimistic I know, but that's just my opinion on the matter.

Although, just to be a contrary-mary, I've decided I'm gonna do one last NS movie when I've finished my current movie project (cs1.6 movie, cevo-professional season highlights for revoltados-esports) and I would hazard a guess that there's a few people working on movies right now, seeing as puzl has been referring people to me for advice on camera controls (thanks for that by the way....) and also M//ke and beefi have also been talking to me about moviemaking stuff. Lagga will probably do another one just to look e-cool aswell.

Things which I would love to see fixed/done for a 'moviemaking' release (be it a dll, or a pack of small tools and stuff), would be as follows - if you are interested puzl (I know you don't have a lot of time to work on this stuff, and anything beyond actual game code fixes we cannot really expect you to do anyway as a result of that, although if any other programmers wanted to help....).

1 - demoedit campath events. fix please, i know ive spoken with you about it already. its top of my list for sure.
2 - a tool to 'unlag' HLTV demos. There is a similar tool available for Quake3, which as I understand it, interlpolates the movement and vector positions between recorded server ticks. This basically smooths out jerky HLTV demos which are a result of recording on a low-fps, or high latency HLTV server. Loads of really good NS footage is unusable because of laggy HLTV demos, and frankly we need to be able to use all the footage we have because there isn't very much....
3 - an actual 'integrated' moviemaking customization ability. check my moviemaking tut thread in the artwork forum for the link to the pack of stuff I used for Radial, something like that to make it *easy* to get rid of the unneeded HUD icons/minimap and such without having to go through every single sprite in your NS folder with spriteviewer like I had to.
4 - ability to remove the commander name at the top, and the ammo/health divider bars at the bottom. those are the only HUD elements which are actually hard-coded as far as im aware, being able to remove them means the ability to record in 4:3 aspect ratios, although most people will probably record widescreen anyway....
5 - draw/reload animations on HLTV(and demos) would freaking rock, i have no idea how hard that would be to fix though (its a problem/error with the base HL engine iirc seeing as it happens in all gldsrc mods?)

That's all I can think of for now, theres probably more.

Oh and puzl, I don't think that the large-view popup map works in HLTV demos. The map pops up fine but on a live HLTV stream you get all the player/structure icons, in demos you dont.

Will recheck later but seems to be in a for me bad ping range.

And I don't mean to be rude, but I really can't call it more then semi competent. :-/

    * move more. You hover loads on a area when rines don't need your support/cover. I bet thats not the only rine group you got, check everything. Since you can hear sound thats also good to check for. The only time I have time to hover long in one place is when it has superb priority, which is rare.

    * use squads.. You had 2 obs as squad.. good, so why do you leave 3 squad keys unused? I have to few for all the things I want in those buttons. Prima targets to squad are obs, AA and armslab.

    * let your rines know you are there, one way or another. Its hard for me as comm not to notice something, since I move around, try to be everywhere, spam comments, info and orders nonstop, and ammo/medspam like hell. Including catalist packs when we got them.

    Just a few pointers which are sure to help. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
