Started reading up on Rysom. Starting to like the freedom part about the choice of character and the fact that no matter what race I pick, good, bad or neither, I have access to all skils. Its just a matter of picking a few and developing them further anytime I want.

Just reading features right now. Screenshots look prety good !

One thing I don't quite understand, free unlimited trial ? The game is listed in www.mmorpg.com but there is no retail price. So what, we simply downloa the trial and then move up to upgrade and then start paying (monthly fees only) ?

I believe you're stuck on newbie island.

I tried the demo quite a while ago and didn't like it tbh :/

Staring June 26th 2007:

SOE (makers of Planet Side) are announcing that they are making INFANTRY free!

YES! I'm going to try to get a group of friend's going and I wonder if we could make it like it was back in the beta days. EOL ftw.

I'm actually really tempted to try out LOTR:O. It feels like a WoW clone to me, but I've done WoW to 66 and got bored grinding to 70. LOTR:O is a new environment so it might be a good change of pace, but I'm not sure, I played the beta and got bored with it quickly.

Well, if anyone want to try, I got a free trial key for LOTRO.

Is it good?
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I know it sounds like a cheesy way to put it, but it's pretty much a WOW clone.
But it got tons of references to LOTR (the books, not the movies). It has a very engaging epic quests that is essentially a side story to the adventure of the fellowship. As of now, I have met Strider, Tom Bombadil, and Gandalf, and eliminated a potential black rider candidate. I will be aiding Gandalf next in... 6 more levels.

The world is... very small. The sense of scale is a bit weird for me at least. Bree is a major city hub. But that will change in my opinion, they planned to almost double the world map in the next update, and the subsequent update as well I guess. You got a Griffin... I mean Horse stable ride that connect the places you have been. But you can run from the shire to Bree in less than 10 minutes to give you an idea.

It runs also very well. It get somewhat laggy in the town, but it is very smooth otherwise on my computer (1gb ram, Radeon x800, 2.8 GHz).
VANGUARD SUCKS VANGUARD SUCKS VANGUARD SUCKS VANGUARD SUCKS VANGUARD SUCKS VANGUARD SUCKS VANGUARD SUCKS VANGUARD SUCKS VANGUARD SUCKS VANGUARD SUCKS VANGUARD SUCKS VANGUARD SUCKS VANGUARD SUCKS VANGUARD SUCKS VANGUARD SUCKS VANGUARD SUCKS VANGUARD SUCKS VANGUARD SUCKS VANGUARD SUCKS VANGUARD SUCKS VANGUARD SUCKS VANGUARD SUCKS VANGUARD SUCKS VANGUARD SUCKS VANGUARD SUCKS VANGUARD SUCKS

The fellowship (group) system is very well done as well as the quests listing. You got rewards for doing a number of things. eg. Killing x amount of spider for the title "Spider Foe", Killing xx amount get you the a permanent (sort of) buffs. And although some quest required a fellowship, most of the time, it's very solo friendly.

The community is very nice, as it's full of Tolkien nerds. Last night, people were arguing where's Frodo home. If you're joining in, I suggest making a Minstrel, it's very much in high demand (healer).

LOTR:O is a WoW clone without the PvP. The one thing I found unique and very exciting was being able to play my own songs on the lute. Your keypad is the different strings, and ctrl or alt make it sharp or flat. My friend and I sat in a busy inn playing hot cross buns on it all night to piss people off. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

3, 2, 1.
3, 2, 1.
3, 3, 3, 3, 2, 2, 2, 2.
3, 2, 1.

Or it could have been...

1, 2, 3.
1, 2, 3.
1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 2.
1, 2, 3.

I don't remember, but it's either or. Then you've got your hot cross buns solo:

123123123123123123
3, 3, 3, 3333333 ctrl2ctrl2ctrl2ctrl2alt3
123 123 123 1 2 3 ONE TWO THREE

Then you scream really loud while you keep jamming.

Yeah, it's pretty sweet.

I sort of answered it. iirc, you're stuck on "newbie island" which has a levelcap, getting off it costs monies.

you can play chords, and your instruments can be heard probably about 20 feet away. they're revamping the music system in a content update in June, too.

I believe that was probably done with a macro program, but next month we'll all be able to play songs from text files, without any outside programs. =p looking forward to that. because I suck at playing music manually. I did get the intro to Stairway down though...

Smoke on the water
Carry on my Wayward Son - Kansas
something from dragonforce (lol)
Dirty Diana - Mj
Beat it (guintar solo) -Mj

Just a few of the songs i'ld try to play haha

Awesome, even though he didn't have it right.

I'd kill to play some music everywhere, I wouldn't even kill stuff. What's the range on the Lute? I think I'll have to test it out soon.

I've always wanted to give LotRO a shot but I've not really had proper access to the net with my PC to play it (still don't!). Sounds interesting though.

All in all I'm still waiting for Warhammer, Huxley and Conan though admittedly there's other MMOs out there that could be great or <i>not good</i> too :3

<b>le sigh edit:</b> I still think it's silly that playground words like poo with a p at the end are censored :/

Although the straight distance between hubs is small in LOTRO, the maps are actually big - there were periods in LOTRO I found myself actually exploring and going places to see what was there. In addition, the game rewards you for exploring because many of your logbook goals involve finding certain points on the map - either clickables or important historical locations, like ruins. There was never a sense of expansiveness or exploring in WoW that LOTRO has.

oh, now I realized what you mean by range =p

you can play a scale in 3 octaves I think, w/ sharps/flats. at least that's what the patch notes say <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" /> personally I'm tone deaf and don't dabble in the music system too much

umm, just a couple random things to bring up on LotR:OL music system.

I haven't played since beta (the game really never grabbed me as something unique)

1) Is it still the case that your class determines your musical instrument? (with Minstrels able to eventauyl learn all of them?)

2) Are you still stuck on one Time Signature?

(I know both of these were complaints, and I am wondering if they are planning on changing it)

I dunno how it works but I know in the latest update they vastly expanded the kind of stuff you could play with more pitches or notes or something.

if you're stuck on a time signature, I never knew it. seems pretty freeform to me. and yes, class determines instrument. all classes can play lute, and each class gets one or two other choices. with the next patch, percussion is getting introduced, and the option of snapping to a time signature or playing freestyle =p

Before one month ago, I had never played any MMO types of games. I am mainly an FPS gamer but now, looking for an MMO I will like.

3 weeks ago, I had done the 10 days WOW trial. It kind left me on a neutral appreciation.

1 week ago, I had started playing the Ryzom trial. I liked it.

5 days ago, I had started the Everquest-II 7 days trial (the Fae one). I am amazed at how high you can go on graphics (specular, reflection, dynamic shadows, ...). In 2 days, I was blocked because the trial didn't allow past level-10. I tried with another character but then, started geting boring because its the same thing all over I have to go through. Also, because I had almost no choices at all to pick a character. Overall, hummm, I don't know. Kinda got bored.

So that's why now, I am thinking about going back on the Ryzom trial. I realy liked it. I love having freedom of choice. To me its closer to real life then being restricted to a specific class where I have to go with specific skills. Having freedom of choice, I could develop my character toward one way but then later, decide to go otherwise and still keep my character and everything I gathered so far. Ok, the graphic isn't as far as what I have seen in Everquest 2 (tried the extream settings to see but I was lagging like hell. It was fun to see. I had to play with Best Performance). But there is something in Ryzom which even in graphics, I cannot find in EQ2.

Anyway, I am going back to Ryzom to start new characters to experiment on skills and maybe going to full subscriptions after.

By the way, Ryzom has no retail box ANYWHERE ? Its only via downloads ? I like keeping the original box of my games for when I have to re-install everything (either that or do another image).

I will warn you about Ryzom.

There isn't nearly as much choice as you could want unfortunatly.

Eventualy you just kinda start seeing that "well this works about 50x better then anythign else, and these blocks are almost compleatly worthless......"

It is a great idea, but the actual execution is kinda lacking. I still love it for concept, but prefer other games my self.

Poking around guides and the forums might give you some more info about the game also.

Oh, and I will also note that I havn't played it in a long time, so I don't know if they have cleaned it up now or not. Worth checkign out.
• DiscoZombieDiscoZombie Join Date: 2003-08-05 Member: 18951Members
If you like being able to experiment with different choices without having to go back and start from scratch, you might like Tabula Rasa when it comes out.

It has a cloning system that will let you clone your char before any class change - and possibly at any time. That way, you can go up 10 levels in your tier 2 class, for instance, and go back to before you made that class choice and try another...
