I guess we just happen to disagree on the impact gender has on personality, and therefore on its importance in the non-physical world of games. I have to say I see more differences between my male and female friends than I do between my friends of different economic/ethnic backgrounds.
And even if what you say about how little gender impacts personality is true, you just said you agree that a fake female is more likely than a real one to mess with you in some way. So its still important to know whether or not that female elf really is female. Although by that logic its not important to know if a male character is really male, but that's not what we're talking about here.

Based on what? You've offered no argument to support your ideas that it's the most important factor in defining personality. Plus, all you're saying about your friends is that when you lump them into one set of groups that don't play a sizeable role in defining personality, rather than another, you see a few more differences. Given that these groups are largely arbitrary under the subject matter, could it be that they're all just different people with individual personalities and you're looking for ways to lump them into unnescessary and over-generalised personality types?
And no, what's more important is not treating people you percieve as being female differently. If that happened, the scammers would have nothing to go on and it wouldn't even be an issue. And if she really is female, then the chances are she doesn't want to be treated differently either.
The fact that you don't care whether or not the players that present as male realy are men suggests that you're more interested in singling out women than dealing with scammers.

HoneyStar or PuffyPant might be the names of My-Little-Ponies on occasion - but if you spot such screen names online, it's a dead giveaway of someone who is a) not a girl and/or b) someone who desperately aspires to pole dance. Like overdoing the color pink, someone with an incredibly girly name is probably someone trying way too hard to pass for a girl. Though, girls are creative and will come up with elaborate names. Thus, if you meet a character named Moodshadow or Ethelenreid (anything vaguely Tolkien), it probably is a girl. If her name is SweetHoneyB13, probably not. <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I strongly disagree with this. My MMORPG character names are as follows WOW; Stormgaze, a female orc warlock
COV; Vicious Valeria, a female fire corr
LORTO; Firithwin, a female champion of Rohan Isilwenial, a female hobbit thief
Ragnarok Online; Lilith Walsh, a female archer
EVE; Lilith Walsh
Those are just the girls btw, I am a doubly creative person and while I can make a character in an hour or so I spend at least fourty minutes or more pining over the right name. So, this totally ruins this theory. Men can be creative too.
<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->I don't know about that. Though I never let anyone hold my hand, because I like to feel as if I've accomplished something.
I have come across the occasional stalker, they are extremely annoying. There was an instance in RO where I wandered into a high level area and was trying to find the way out when two higher lvl characters... Who were obviously much younger, ran around me in circles screaming <i>"Protect the princess!"</i> until I willing ran into the orcs to end the suffering.
I don't walk around telling everyone I'm a guy. However, should anyone ask I always state that I am in fact a dude.
The girl avatars are so much better looking. The developers/modelers/whatever always seem to spend more time making the women than the men. When more character creators become like COV/COH I will be more prone to play male avatars.
To be honest I would've thought most of that read like common sense but I guess some guys have a weird perception of what girls are like or something.
Sorta reminds me of when I used to roleplay in games; a fanboy noticed how much people responded to me and started playing a female character. At first it was just annoying because he'd copy some of my habits (not just my character's ones, MINE too! >< ) and then he started making her all 'oh I broke a nail' and stuff. Instead of being determined, witty and competent like most of my characters his was filled with lots of horrible cliched 'helplessness', pink stuff. The scary or sad thing was that one or two random people actually thought he was a girl and gave him things o.O
I don't know if I was more angry at him for playing the kind of character I detest or at the people who were stupid enough to fall for it.
I guess the biggest illustration of how silly guys can be was when two of my friends (they're married, husband and wife) went onto a game and both played female characters; the boys were all over the hubby while they flat out accused my other friend of being a guy XD
