One of the Guys at work here had Halo 3 up so I gave it a quick bash... feels much the same as the first two to me minus the change of button configurations :/

Still the same suicide jockeys running about who are all too easy to kill too.

The tale Quan tells is very nice and all but I could've told you pretty similar stuff from my Halo 1 days.
It was common place for me to lob grenades across the smaller maps using the terrain to bounce them incredible distances and into narrow passages killing many a surprised player.

I still remember vividly events like 3 enemies driving together into our base and gunning down my hapless teammates before I leapt from on-high and one-shotted the driver with a precision melee attack. The other two jumped out, freaking out completely as I chased and gunned down another effortlessly. Turning around I saw the remaining survivor and a friend of his who had been near enough to witness it all leaping into the Warthog and attempting to screech away from me in terror.
Sadly they only got so far as a lazily tossed grenade I sent their way bounced under their retreating wheels and exploded, flipping the vehicle over and crushing them underneath it as it rolled.

Thing is, I'm sure most of the people here could boast similar feats. The average Halo player is pretty bad and until you've stuck a grenade to them, tend not to show any signs of survival instincts.

I guess it's a testament to how fun the game is though that such havoc can occur. While more common these days, the realtime physics vehicles, easy access melee and grenades (no need to switch weapons! :D) and recharging shield (which encourages taking cover and fighting rather than just running the healthpack routes all the time) were a nice mishmash that made it unique.

Halo 3 is well passed those days though. It's prettier and has improvements but it still feels like much the same old thing really :3

    Don't fix what ain't broken.

So, all I've got to say is, I haven't slept, and its 5:46. Okay, so I had like a 90 minute nap. I'm going to bed now.

Anem could tell you the joys we had. They were rife with...joy.

you don't really play halo for the stories, you play for the sandbox gameplay. same with that tribes game that had a single-player campaign.

the multiplayer i doubt will have much longevity for me. not only can i not do twitch headshots as can everyone else in H2MP, but i don't even understand how it's possible to do that on a control pad. how do you turn around quickly? how do you aim for the head of a moving target when a thumb controls your entire viewpoint? it's annoying duelling with someone who can put you down with 2 bursts of the BR everytime. i don't think location-based damage belongs in fps console games :S

    e/

or maybe i just suck at games

It's not difficult to get headshots in halo because:
    Everybody moves pretty slow
The psuedo-auto-aim feature (many people never notice this, but your reticle slows down as it nears somebody)

Besides, sniper is the only one where headshots are insta-kill. All the others just do some extra damage.

Every time I've played a Halo game it sucked and was boring. I guess I'll play Halo 3 one day and I won't be surprised if it's boring too.

My mom's dutch. My mom's a secretary. The only games my mom's played are mario and the likes. My mom hates using a computer at home (she uses one at work, but for the basic office work ofc). My mom...will probably know what I mean by "frames per second", as my mom is not retarded. Dear god, how can anyone not understand "frames per second"? It's normal English.

Anyhow, I'll ask her tomorrow, 05.53 am atm.
    <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

The issue is not the capability for understanding, it's the knowledge. I could teach just about everyone tons of acronyms but that doesn't mean they'll know what I'm talking about before I explain it to them. People in general, and by extension people who play games on consoles, will not know that FPS means "frames per second" unless you explicity tell them.

Locational damage? What? Don't people have shields? I mean, you've got SHIELDS. I know they're pseudo-science and all, but let's look at it this way: The shields distribute damage uniformly. Even though a guy only shoots you in the legs, your chest still becomes vulnerable once your shields are gone. Also, you never take any damage to your health while the shields are up. In other words, the shields absorb the damage at the cost of energy. It makes no sense whatsoever that your shields would take more damage depending on what's underneath them (such as your head).

There should be some kind of calculator...for the amount you get killed/bsed and how much rage it generates. Because this game get so ###### infuriating after a while..you just feel hopeless.

Actually, it slightly does. Bungie has in fact had a weekly update on it, but I'll paraphrase to explain, as I can't damn well find it.

Basically, its easy to notice that the spartan has two major computer systems on their body- on their upper shoulders, and the back of the head. The shield systems for the body are kept up through a special material that more or less keeps the shield over the entire body. Conversely, the head has it's own shield generator- not so much weaker, as much as it has less resistance. Thusly, headshots are effected more as the headpiece also has the most major computer system(managing the HUD, etc), so it's energy reserves run out quickly.

Now, its key to note that the sniper rifle will eliminate any shield, regardless of head or body, with a single shot. The strength of the shield determines how big the slowdown is- perhaps able to not kill someone, for example. At the same time though, you'll note that once the shields are gone, you're nearly dead, as your body is on edge from all the chemicals pumping through.

    Etc.

Design flaw, technology limitations- I mean, if you didn't notice, no other marines had Shields. Humans have barely, BARELY had the technology for maybe 5 or 6 years.

    But yeah, it is as a reward for getting headshots. Oi <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

Even though I don't like the games, I adore Halo's setting and backstory for some unknown reason, probably my love of Spartans and Norse mythology. If you couldn't "BOOM HEADSHOT" in Halo, you'd just call it a dumb console shooter made for people who can't aim.

If you can design a modularized, rechargeable active kinetic deflection system you could easily divert power from the body to the head. Better yet, take the time to model the shield system as described in the books: with CPU-controlled power distribution.

can i just add "first and foremost it's a game" in here. not everything has to make sense. i remember reading a thread after matrix 2 come out with ideas for how keanu reeves was going to wake up in the thrid movie. i read all these elaborate ideas that mixed religion with technology etc... and all along i was thinking "he's just going to wake up and rock the machines". not exactly how it turned out but a damned sight closer than theories such as "he's technologies Judas"

trimmed-down version- master cheif's sheild covers his head cos it makes the game better.
