The "ban me" post.

Hey there, some of you may or may not know me from ages ago. I've been a fan of the mod and the forums for a long time, and I've been reading off-topic for ages after I quit playing NS.

After the forums downtime all the cool kids left and all that's left is the asshats. I'm not saying everyone is a moron, I'm just saying the mods got their priorities in a bunch. You see, the word ish (fecal matter) is censored, but being a pretentious looser with a masturbatory sig that includes crap no one cares about is commonplace. Observe:

1. A quote someone says about you on irc or the forums: "Lol x5 u so drukn"

2. Something you did or didn't do. Sure if it's relevant, no worries. Level designer for NS? Great. Participated in a game involving pretending to be a werewolf on irc, where you won 3rd place? Not flattering.

Now I wouldn't be having this rant if the sig was the only thing wrong right? What people need to realize, this is a forum. While it's privately owned, and the mods do as they will, it's a place for public opinion. Discussion is cool, kids! If you have a point to make, do it in a constructive manner. Here's how you do it! ARE YOU EXCITED TO LEARN HOW TO STOP SOUNDING LIKE A 12 YEAR OLD?

- Don't insult the other poster, unless he really is a moron! Did someone just disprove you on which computer game is teh gratest evur? Retire quietly! Saying "lol whatever" as is ever too common, will achieve nothing.

- Are you sure your opinion is valid? Adamantly defend it! Pick the oppositions arguments apart, and provide new ones for your own cause. If the opposition resorts to passive aggression ("umm, no?"), namecalling, or dismissal, you win! YAY! YOU ROCK MY BALLS!

- Don't be a pretentious asshat. Only 16 years old? No experience in life? No real opinions, aside from ones MTV conveniently provides for you? Shut up. Simple. Don't say anything. You are not smart, and your opinions are shallow and pedantic (SEE WHAT I DID THERE?). It hurts my innards, reading your analysis on the significance of Clouds hair in relation to the relationship metroid Metroid and Aeris. Listen to what the older members have to say, and yes there are a lot of them here. In time, you'll be a constructive, brief and concise poster, just like all the cool kids who smoke and drink!

I wish the old forums were back. We all exchanged opinions ever so gleefully, and all was well. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

Oh and just to save time:

<!--QuoteBegin-some genius who thinks no one expected it+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(some genius who thinks no one expected it)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->lol bai<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

There, now you don't have to!

<!--QuoteBegin-the sixteen-year old+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(the sixteen-year old)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->INSERT TEN PARAGRAPHS OF TEXT NO ONE WILL EVER READ. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
"olol irany?"

There, that's out of the way as well. We all knew it was coming.

I won't read the thread out of priciple (the topic title includes "ban me") but considering that it has been written by RustySpoon: I agree 100%!

    EDIT1:
    Arg, couldnt resist. I read the damn thing <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

    Meh, I still agree 100% <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

    EDIT2:
Concerning Sigs: You know, "SnakeNet Metal Radio" is about as relevant and important as pretty much anything else found in the common sig. But hey, pretty much anything we do is irrelevant, cause the impact that our life has on other people is rather small. You might argue, that you have a huge impact on your wive, kids, friends; but the truth is that they would not miss you if they would not know you existed. I for example kinda miss littlelerks posts on this forum. They were dump, unique and cheered me up, but if LL didnt exist I would have just gone with the next best substitute (a role currently held by Tommekki) simply because I never knew what I would have missed. Humans need soo few, yet are offered soo much that the lack of one or the other does not matter. If your favourite food would not exist you would have just gone with another favourite food.

Pretty much everything in modern society is redundant and irrelevant. And forum sigs are not an exception.

See, I'm wondering whether replying with "lol, /sign" would constitute helping Rusty, or making it worse. Decisions, decisions....

That said, I'd agree. 'Something' happened a while ago, but it seems to have afflicted the entire gaming world, not just NS, where the goal is to be actually intentionally as foolish as you can, because that's smart. Contradictory Surrealism (Can I coin that? Yeah, I will.) I wouldn't know what it actually was though.

I'm confused as to why this made it onto the list. I'm assuming you are referring to the game that is shown in my sig. The game is composed of people from this community, and played on this forum. It also had the support and participation of several admins and moderators before the forum went down (since that's the reference point you used). Completely irrelevant to the thread, but there is no third place in the game.

Basically, I get most of your post. People are immature, and apparently nothing is done about it now, which is a change from before (I'm not agreeing or disagreeing, just summarizing). I don't understand how the bit about sigs is relevant at all though.

I agree with most of what you have to say, but bad luck if you don't like people's signatures.

"Don't insult the other poster, unless he really is a moron!"

How about no insulting at all? It's pretty subjective regarding who is and who is not a moron, and also I'm pretty sure insulting in general is against the forum rules.

"Are you sure your opinion is valid? Adamantly defend it!"

Some people don't realise they're opinions are going to cause trouble and just don't have the time to justify themselves a whole lot to a bunch of people on the internet, nor should they have to in the first place if they choose not to, save for the discussion forum.

I'm a bit disapointed at the use of AOLspeak and blatant leetspeak that is used in an attempt to potentially insult people or to sound sarcastic. Considering very few people on this forum actually respond with something like (forgive the necessity) "lol dat 1z da sux0rz", I'm not sure it needs to be berated as something that is done out of immaturity - however, I do grow tired of its use as a mechanic for insulting someone in a tangential manner ("Ha ha, you're argument looks like AOL speak and you sound like a 13 year old" would be far more effective, to me). As such, I am somewhat disheartened to see the opening post resorting to such measures, despite the overall message being decently on target (if somewhat intentionally broad and diluted).

I will say the swear filter is oppressive (a palindrome consisting solely of "p" and "o" with 4 letters meaning fecal matter spoken by 3 year olds...among others) and I do hope to see that revised at some point (you want to make it 'family friendly'? That's all well and good, but why block out 'family friendly' words spoken by 13, 5 or even 3 year olds?).

I do think your concern for people's signatures is a bit absurd, however. At least we don't have any of the 400x800 flashing 30mb movie signatures that seem prevalent on some boards. Then again, maybe my signature sucks, I don't know (...like I've mentioned before, I don't even know who hosts it...and I'm too lazy to go to the picture's properties to find out <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> ).

Now that you mention the swearfilter:

you know there's a setting to not show sigs, no?

We need a crackdown on people who are just making a thread with a link with no actual content, particularly news stories links.

Many of you underestimate how much a positive influence NemesisZero had on this community.

Things changed when he left, imo.

No, you are saying everyone is an asshat. Thank you for the blatant generalisation, I'll make sure to treat you with all the respect you deserve as well.

What, I'm supposed to care about this? You don't like my SIGNATURE? You know what, there's an option to turn them off. Instead of griping about it, you could have taken a minute to go into your forum settings and set an option that would never show you my dastardly signature again. You could really have picked a far more worthwhile cause than complaining about small, unobstrusive (not to mention easily hidden) signature images with the massive footprint of 3342 bytes that are actually USEFUL to some of us.

Oh right, almost forgot, on the topic of sigs and relevance: I'm a creature of off-topic, and have been for years. The ENTIRE POINT OF THIS SUB-FORUM is that it's not relevant.

nobody cares about a stupid radio station, i petition to have spoon's sig removed on the grounds that it is not relevant to my interests. it's not like i can turn sigs off or <a href="http://adblock.mozdev.org/" target="_blank">filter</a> his <a href="http://phoenixlabs.org/pg2/" target="_blank">host</a> or <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts.txt" target="_blank">anything</a>.

That sums this thread up perfectly, if you want the forums to go to the 'old ways' as you describe it you would advise the mods to lock and delete this thread as to not stir more commotion. Making the assumption that the forums are full of morons is just adding the fuel to the flame.
