One question

Hi guys. I'm Parrot-of-War and I started playing Natural Selection about 3-4 years ago and have been playing on and off since then (sometimes with long breaks in between as I started playing other games).

Anyways, I have a question about NS2: will Natural Selection 2 really be it's name, or is that just what's it's being known as in it's current state? I think since NS1 wasn't really a full game, bit rather a free mod that isn't known much (if at all) to people who don't play HL1 mods you should just call this full game Natural Selection or just give it a subtitle like Natural Selection: Annihilation (but not as corny and cliche as that). It's what The Ship team did and I think it was a good idea just using the original name.

    While an interesting suggestion, keep in mind that this forum alone has nearly 35,000 registered members. Before DOD went retail, NS wasn't too far behind it in terms of player minutes per month on Steam's usage graphs.

    I too find that most people I personally come across who don't play Valve games haven't heard of Natural Selection, however I'm not sure how much that point matters when NS2 will be sold over Steam, which pretty much means UWE is targetting a subset of HL2's market.

    Oh, sorry, I think it should be called NS2. I was trying to say that enough of the target market should have already heard of NS.

    I think a name or subtitle would be a good idea. I think people are more likely to pick up a new game if it isn't a sequel of a game they never heard of nor played. If it has more of a description to it people may think it's less like the original and will see what it's all about. I'm not saying NS1 is bad by any means, just that people will generally assume in a snap judgement situation that if it's a game they never heard of, that it was probably bad, so maybe something like NS: Full Scale War or something that describes how this game is different from its predecessor would be good.

    I would bet there's all ready a name picked out like this that the devs will release at a strategic time. Maybe I'm just an optimist though.

    Obviously while picking out a name you are trying to appeal to the largest audience you possibly can. Calling the game Natural Selection 2 would give a mass audience a feel that this is a quality game/idea if a sequel was made of it. However I still agree with your suggestion that a new name may help.

    Actually it's that idea that I think might drive off some newcombers. If they see it was a sequal, and have never heard of the first one in their life, they might think the first one was a complete failure.

    I remember having heard that NS1 was the "first contact", and NS2 was going to be "the war". So something in the lines of "Natural Selection 2 : The War" is fine to me ^^ It's explicit enough to know you'll be right in the middle of an already boiling struggle, even if you didn't play NS1.

    I think that NS2 Would be good because a ton (not as many as CSS) have played this game and tell their friends to pick it up like CSS that how it all starts. Well i know it was like that for me, a friend told me about CS actually and then she told me about CSS. So NS2 would be fine i think because people would get the word around. Maybe get a My space chain thing going.

    Now that it's been mentioned, there really is no reason to put a 2 in the title. Those that have played NS know it's a sequal, those that haven't won't know (for awhile at least) that there was a prequel.

    The difference between the games CSS and DOD:S and our NS2 is that NS2 is an actual sequel. CSS and DOD:S are more like ports, there not really that much change between the games besides improvements from the last.

    NS2 is going to be an all new game, not a simple port. And here is a important point. Sequels don't sound bad in the video game industry, sequels tend to be better here. It's in the movie industry that sequels are often known to be worse than their predecessor. Adding a subtitle just makes it sound more like a add-on, like "Sims: Living it up" or "Total war: Annihilation".

    It's is my sincere opinion that Natural Selection 2 is the best name proposed yet.
