Nothing really newsworthy here, this is just a continuation of a worrying trend. Quack Thompson must be wetting himself over this.

That reminds me:

Back in 1998 one pupile at my school created a quake level based on it. I even have the CD they released it together with the abi-magazine. Noone cared about it.

Prep for upload ^^

EDIT: Found the file. It was for quake2 though. Anyone know a place where a can quickly host 20 MBs without too much hazzle?

Yet another edit: link to the map: http://www.sharebigfile.com/file/159052/pak0-pak.html

sigh.

I don't know why, but I actually still have faith in the judicial system, and I am rather sure of my self in saying that this entire thing will be smacked down as a violation of his 1st amendment rights.

Sure, your freedom of speech has limitations (for good reasons), but this does not fall ANYWHERE near those limitations.

The sad thing?
As with a good number of these "violent video games are bad" attacks, it is the tax payers who will end up paying for this waste of time.

What does this teach us?
Elect smarter officials.

I find the whole thing laughable really (in a sick way :/ ).

Some of the people commenting on the websites for the area it happened were saying such wonderfully clever things like "there must've been something wrong with the kid for him to make a map of his school" and even better was "the world has changed after 9-11" and then they rabbit on about how now even your next door neighbour could be a sex offender or something.

If you ask me, it sounds like the kid is the last person who needs their head checking :s

People tend to fear the unknown and you can bet your ###### that these officials don't know anything about the gaming industry. The "facts" they boast about that they know are based on media frenzy, biased articles and fear perhaps?

If I was this kid I would be majorly ###### and hire a lawyer because his rights went down the toilet.

no, just the most recent and horrific one.

(oh, and I think it has nothing to do with race tbh)

Oh, and I am rather sure that he isn't even going to have to hire a lawyer, there are alot of civiliberties types out there that would lvoe to get their name on smackign down something this stupid (this is 100% a freedom of speech issue)

Honestly, he won't be convicted of anything. Just because some officials are stupid doesn't mean they all are. Remember the boston bomb scare (lol athf)? The arrested the guys who put them up, and guess what happened to them? Nothing. Things are wrong with our judicial system, but it can still handle little stuff like this.

umm, they got fired and the company got a rather heavvy fine, I wouldn't put that down as "nothing"

BTW, the kid has ALREADY been thrown out of his HS.

This isn't just about criminal proceadings, he also needs to be reinstated to school, and have what ever other sanctions they placed on him lifted.

Why bother imprison people if you can just ###### them over completely? Ruining them is so much cheaper.

Cartoon network agreed to pay money to boston, to help PR. The guys weren't "Fired" considering they were their entire advertising business.

Suspended doesn't equal "Thrown Out".

Did we even read the same article? The police overreacted and it was fairly clear that people realised they were wrong. They didn't confiscate or destroy anything, and didn't charge him with any crimes. They took precautions to far, ish happens.

Y'know, I once suggested that my school be made into an NS map. I even uploaded a map of the school to the customisation boards in case anyone else wanted to have a go with it (I dunno, something about it's layout really seemed conductive to a NS map to me).

Little did I know I was playing with fire.

Btw, the CEO of Cartoon Network resigned over the Boston thing. I know that isn't related to the guys who put up the signs in the first place, but I just thought I'd remind everyone of the sheer stupidity surrounding that entire situation.

He was removed from his original school and moved to an alternate edcuational facility, which sounds like a pretty crappy thing to me. The police searched his room and found swords. The search was initiated because the school complained about him creating the map I think. It's not indicative of a broken judicial system, in fact you could argue the system worked because the police didn't charge or arrest him.

To me the problem lies more in the school board and their failure to understand the whole situation. The Virgina Tech shootings surely didn't help but they really overreacted on this one, acting without trying to understand why the kid made the map and how there wasn't any malice behind it.

really stupid..
Yeah pretty much every map creator i know started out mapping their own school. When i first learned to use hammer, i mapped my school gymnasium and a few hallways before i got bored of it and started something else.
It just makes sense for a student to map his own school. It's probably close by so you can refer to it whenever you need to and its often the first thing on your mind when you're in school. When you think, "hey, what should i map next" there's an 80% chance that you're sitting bored in class.

If you call getting suspended from school and sent to some alterintive school for kids with behavioral problems "nothing." The artical also said he was arrested and labed a "terrorist threat" All for making some counter-strike map.

Hosestly the only reasion they are going apeish over this is becuase of the reacent VTech shooting. Apprently he made and distributed the map months ago.

yeah i really dont get it... violent games are just like 1980s films: lots of shooting and death, and lots of entertainment. How is this any different to playing computer games?

The generation that keeps harping on about how "bad" video games are need to take a reality check. Oh ok so before video games the baby-boomer generation enjoyed a utopia where there was no violence and everyone didnt think twice about leaving doors unlocked because the world was all round just more pleasant. but violence has always been around, and they need to accept this. Try to think about the actual reasons why instead of making video games a red herring.

For centuries there have been forms of entertainment that aim to simulate destruction, death and conquest. from chess to board games the object of killing has always been the same. Did hitler devestate europe because he played chess and he loved the buzz of outwitting foes on the battlefield?? No of course not... he was just a psycho.. just like most killers/ mass-murderers tend to be.

I guess if the time space continuem was bent u could place the 90s before the world wars, korea, vietnam, the arab-israeli wars.. in fact any war in history and blame video games. Wouldnt that be convenient for DR Phil.
