Caseless Ammunition

<div class="IPBDescription">Since it's set in the future...</div>Right now, an idea that's been floating around in the firearms industry is caseless ammunition. Meaning bullets that don't require a casing. This would most likely be what the TSA are using for ammo because by then. I'm pretty sure that since caseless ammunition doesn't require as much resources to manufacture, the TSA can more efficiently spend their resources. Another benefit is ammo clips are lighter and as a result you can carry more.

The HK G11 Rifle uses caseless ammunition.

An advantage of conventional metal cartridges is that the casing absorbs a large portion of the waste heat of firing, and protects the propellant from the heat of the chamber. Ejecting the hot, empty casing removes some of the ignition heat from the weapon, which helps to avoid "cook off" (premature firing of rounds due to a weapon's extreme heat). With caseless rounds, other means of reducing waste heat are necessary, especially in automatic fire. The solution taken with the G11 was to use ammunition which had a higher ignition temperature, which reduced the risk of cook-off.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    still has some kinks.

this is just cosmetic, i like the spray of brass personally.

While this does fit with the feeling of futuristic weaponry, the gritty feeling of grass being ejected is pretty awesome.

    Meh anyway:
So you want to be able to fire 250000 rps. Thats fine.
Lets also assume you manage to produce a round that weighs only 1 gramm.
Thats only 250kg worth of ammo for a second of supression fire. Sounds nice, but is hardly man-portable. I mean, the general idea behind this metal-storm thingy seems to be that you simly pack several bullets in a single barell. This has some interesting side effects: Some bullets go longer through the barell and thus fly more stable as well as pack more punch in form of kinetic energy. I doubt this metal storm will ever be mass produced in a hand-held form. It might be a good replacement for the hundreds of years old "hail of arrows".

Seeing brass fly in every direction, and covering the ground is more atmospheric then seeing no brass. I hate how all the games today do not have brass staying for more then a few seconds. At least give the option to make the brass stay longer.
