remove bunny hopping

i don't like bunny hopping. i think it divides players into vary distinctly separate groups of the people who are able to master this skill and those who can not (or even those who do not recognize it). i think the mastery of the skulk, for example, should be centered around team awareness, an eye for locations to ambush from and a combination of being able to evade fire while closing the gap with their targets in order to get into bite range. i don't think "special moves" like those from street fighter or mortal combat need to be included in a first person shooter

"team awareness, an eye for locations to ambush from and a combination of being able to evade fire while closing the gap with their targets in order to get into bite range." are all more important to skulking than bunny hopping.
Bunny hopping is really, for the most part, just a way to travel around the map faster.

Bunnyhopping is just used for traveling through the map faster to react to threats. It's not for rushing head on into a marine. If you can successfully bhop down a hallway into a marine and kill him, he wasn't gonna kill you in the first place since he can't aim.

...or if he's AFK, blind, typing, etc...but bhopping isn't a neccesary skill. Really, think of it as...multiple uses of leap or something. Leap is faster if used repeatedly; and it can deal damage. Bhopping isn't something that needs to be fixed, though it might not exist in HL2 due to the physics anyways.

I wonder if there's anyone who has learned a decent bhop and still wants it removed. The learning curve isn't optimal, but bhop has to be replaced by something if its ever getting removed at least. It just adds so much more to alien gameplay. Bhopping related movement is one of the things that make teamwork, ambushing and dodging so interesting.

I've gotten used to people bhopping, its been there so long that its like a part of the game. Bhopping anyway is probably going to be removed because bhopping is a exploit (or something along those lines) of the HL engine. I doubt the Source engine carries on this exploit.

(I don't make the greatest technical made simple sentences)

As far as I know hl2 has bhopping too. Although bhopping may have started as exploiting the quake enginge physics, I wouldn't call it exploiting anymore. Its a part of the game and the alien gameplay has been built so that it encourages bhopping. It could have been quite easily removed if necessary.

If I remember correctly, Flayra himself has said its part of the game. It could hardly be considered an exploit in the game developer doesn't think its one.

I don't do it, but I never get mad at others for doing it. If they want to work hard enough to learn it, good for them.

That is just so sad... Give people who take advantage of a quirk in the HL engine an advantage.. Great...

w00tie: If bunnyhopping makes a game fun for you, imagine how "non-funny" it must be for those who don't want to or can't figure it out... You only think it's funny because you get an advantage over other players that doesn't do it.

the easyest think to kill a bhopper skulk, you can draw the line with the crosshair where it will go, if not, learn aim and dont complain about bhop

Its not "non-funny" to me and I never bothered to learn it. Just because I didn't take the time to learn something doesn't mean I'm going to whine when someone who did gets a slight advantage over me. Bhopping might have been considered an exploit at first but its just part of the game now. Besides its REALLY not crucial skill. I'd say the advantage it confers is small compared to the effort it takes.

personally i think skulks are to slow when not b'hop'n. I learned it before the days of ns, so it just feels really natural using it constantly to get around.

Movement is important to aliens, so i wouldnt like to see it removed totally. i would however, like to see it made a "built in" feature so it's easier for players to learn, maybe even just a matter of changing jump so you just have to hold it down, or give the ability to prime the next jump while in the air. Obviously you can use the mousewheel or the 3 jump script, but thats not very user friendly.

If removed, it could be at least replaced by some other form of movement technique thats more intuitive.

Well... It's always more fun if you're good at the game. Why would hopping harm the non-hopping folk?

Don't want to? The game is built so that its completely allowed to bhop, so its your own business if you don't want to do it. I often play combat with lmg, but I don't complain when the onoses kick in.

Can't figure it out? There are some tutorials around. Try reading one and then just start hopping. Almost every moment you're running around you could be hopping. At first it may feel useless, but at least its easy to start practising and there are plenty of opportunities for it.

Once again the learning curve is bad, but the feeling when you get the hang of it is great. It still feels nice when you hear a marine, wait for the moment and then rush out gaining plenty of speed with a few hops and reach the marine before he can do much harm.

Try using celerity, or just leap. Much, much faster than normal walking, without the trouble of bhopping. Movement is important to aliens, but it works well to do things other than bhopping as well.

Personally, I think that the wall jump move that was added for skulks is under-used; it isn't a bunny hop, but you can jump from wall to wall and draw clips from several marines without taking too much damage, assuming they're at an average skill level. That in conjunction with leap is all the movement a skulk needs, really. I don't bhop, I've never had the patience to learn, but there's other, just as effective ways to dodge and move quickly, so I don't think removing it is really a big concern.

why would a technique be required? why not just have flat run speed bonus to the skulk (or anything that can bunnyhop for that matter) or just add in a sprint function?

the reason why i see bhopping as so useful is because it increases the movement speed of the skulk (or gorge, or w/e), lowering the amount of time it takes to close the gap. this is the same function celarity has mind you.

The bacteria on the bottom of its feet latch onto each ladder spoke, creating a kind of wall walk similar to a skulk. Duh.

Yeah. Sprint > Bhopping for many reasons, such as not having to constantly jump, allowing you to focus more on the battle at hand.

No offense to anyone, but I think you need to suck it up if you can't bunnyhop. You see, I know it takes time to learn to bunnyhop, and to some extent it is a skill, but if you think about it, isn't that the point of a skill? Something that takes commitment, time and dedication to achieve. You guys are trying to break the fundamental principle of all games which states that some people must be better than others. If everything gets nerfed to the point where we're all equal, then why even bother trying or why even play at all. To me it defeats the purpose of even playing.

Same crap happened to WoW and Burning Crusade. Many "unskilled players" complained how hard it was to level, get good items, etc; and look what happened. All the effort and time that people put into the game before burning crusade got completely nullified because extremely better and easier to acquire gear was available.

If bhopping goes, i think a lot of skilled players will go too.

A sprint key instead of bhopping isn't going to make a traumatic difference. Skilled players will have one less field to own the noobs in. Gasp! Whatever will they do? Oh, yeah, the whole out-skill them with aiming, tactics, etc thing...

No, thats the point, why would you want to remove areas where skilled players can really shine. I've read some posts earlier and I agree with the guy who said that there are so many areas that you can improve in and stay top notch (makes the game interesting when you constantly learn new techniques). To me that why NS was successful and never ending fun. There is always room for improvement. If you slowly start to take away all those areas, then game will eventually become boring. I think nothing from NS should be removed, only added. (as in hi guess you can ave the sprint key if you want, but keep bhopping).

I can Bhop just fine. Source doesn't allow for Bhop. If it did, you'd see it in Counter-strike. There's always room for improvement in NS2, but having Bhopping, a simple move that gives you a little more speed, removed isn't going to cripple that.

you can't bhop in cs 1.6 either, what's your point?

I hate the people who want to get rid of bhop because they don't want to learn. If I decided it wasn't worth my time to learn how to jetpack should I be complaining about getting it removed? Honestly the little intracacies like bunnyhopping and the huge differences between marine/skulk/gorge/lerk/fade/onos/commander/etc are the ONLY reason I've played NS as long as I have. I played CS for about 2 years, got so sick of it that i haven't played it hardly in the past 4+ years. Same with Halo, and just about any other game. NS? 4 years and counting.

I'm fine with adding something like a sprint, but I will always bunnyhop and glide jump around because its challenging and rewarding and interesting(it makes just walking from one point on the map to the other actually fun), and I know ns2 is probably going to have bigger maps, games etc. and I'm not willing to spend time just pressing forward(and sprint occasionally) while I try to walk accross the map to do something. I won't stop playing NS1 until NS2 has bunnyhopping(or something similarly complex, I don't care if I have to relearn it), and if NS1 dies out first, I'll probably stop playing video games altogether.

This entire argument is like listening to an average athlete complain about the fact that paid-pro athletes practice more and can achieve more on things they spend time to prefect.
