the psychology of griefing

the gist of it is that most griefers are acting out because they're scapegoated by a group, or are rebelling because they're not sure they want to be in the group... though when you think about it, those are probably related. if you feel like an outsider, you act like one...

    Thats great sweet bitter subtleness.

Yeah, they seem to ignore the possibility that they're just doing it for fun; the article seems to suggest that ALL griefers greif because they've been wronged in some way, rather than just being buttholes.

    I just got /gkicked from my WoW guild after being a scapegoat leader <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

I never last long in WoW guilds...

I wish Tabula Rasa or Conan or Warhammer Online or whatever the other promising MMO's are would come out already so I could jump into a new game rather than keep at the WoW...

Similar to how psychologists forget that some people rob banks for certain green bills.

I grief because I get my kicks knowing that somewhere out there, on the other side of a monitor some guy is getting ######. It tickles my fancy, if you will. Besides, in games where you can't really hurt somebody inside the game mechanics, griefing is the best you can do.

You mean, you won't ever have to meet whoever it is that you're griefing face-to-face, so you aren't going to get beat up for otherwise unacceptable behavior?

Actually, it's more of an almost voyeuristic(is that even a word?) feeling. It's that Im remotely affecting something that is very far away.

I don't understand why anyone would want to ruin someone else's day. Sometimes, after a long day of hard work I like to play a game. I want to relax so I can feel refreshed without having to go to bed stressed out. Isn't that what everyone else wants? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" />

Griefing doesn't make me angry or anything like that, just confused and disappointed that people want to ruin the relaxation time of others. It just doesn't make sense. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" /> Isn't playing the game enjoyable enough in itself?

Depends on the style of griefing as well I guess. Corpse camping in WoW is just boring, but Team-Killing in RTS games I find highly amusing. Back-stabbing and such in games that allow it (good old days of starcraft) is hilarious. In my case atleast, not actually seeing the people in real-life has nothing to do with it, since I most often do it to people I know (We play CSS/SupCom/C&C Generals together). Basically I find it funny to kill off my teammates in games where they did little or nothing. Am I a bad person for this? Yeah probably.

Backstabbing your allies is par for the course in rts games. Unless specifically stated otherwise, I suppose.

    Anonymity combined with zero consequences.

Seriously: If the world blew up in 7 days and we knew it for sure (100% certain, that we are all going to die), hell would brake loose. Rape, murder, robbery everyone could just commit crimes, without fearing an actual punishment.

I am with good old De-Card on this one: Human spirit is evil and only our need for other humans (surviving in a society is easier than surviving on your own) makes us restrain our craving for anarchy and violence.

I understand killing him a couple times since he went cherry picking, but a whole afternoon is pretty excessive. I don't get why he didn't log out after the third or so kill though... says something about WoW.

Wasn't there some sort of punch you could do in SWAT 4 on people that didn't do anything? I remember punching teammates.

yah. I have nothing against ganking people that gank you (I ussed to to this alot in the old MMO The Realm, either acting as bait for highlevel friends, or once Iwas highlevel, wandering around in newb cloathes and killing any one that tried to gank me).

Admitedly ganking him for a solid afternoon is KINDA lame. But, tbh he should have logged (honestly, this is why I stoped playing WoW, gank fests are jus boring, I always log as soon as they start)

Back when I still played WoW as alliance on a horde dominated server, corpse camping was a pretty huge problem. So whenever I would get camped, I would just log off and go outside. Knowing that some guy is waiting around my body for me to respawn while I just went off and did something else. I think that is probably the best way to defeat a camper...

well, that or just have alts you are cool with playing <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

If some one wants to grief my main, I will go level up and alt, or grind some mining or what ever <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
