<div class="IPBDescription">optical laser and nuclear sensors...</div>K, I'm probably in the market for a mouse... I've read all this shizzle about optical/laser, now I know a lot of this can be chalked up too personal preference and the likes. But I would like to know more about people their experience with the current marketed mice...
For example, why 1600/2000dpi? What for, I mean I am pretty good at aiming at stuff. And also am able to hit stuff at a distance, with my good ol' MX500, which I believe has a 800dpi optical sensor with an MX optical engine...
laser:
Has fantastic accuracy... is cool because of laser, but I heard it sometimes skips.. I mean skipping is what my first mouseman wheel optical did, I expect that this new tech at least has gotten past skipping. Any experience with these laser mice? Is it really needed to use a G5/7 or razor copperhead... Bot of which also have a "nice" "new" "fancy" feature to be able to change dpi ingame...
optical:
800dpi is the max? I'm currently using one, what is the use of going over 800dpi if I am perfectly able to aim at distant ww2 soldier and snipe off his helmet (Forgotten Hope). Is there truly a significant gain in accuracy?
Basically I have four questions <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
1. is going over 800dpi really needed
2. are the new laser boys reliable --> not skipping when moving fast
3. ability to change dpi ingame, who actually uses it (sniping vs closerange smg fire or vehicle turrets)<!--coloro:#FF6666--><span style="color:#FF6666"><!--/coloro-->*<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc-->
4. is dust an issue (laser), if it gets inside the mouse, I know from my Mx500 that only severe dust would screw around with the accuracy and needs cleaning, what about laser
<!--coloro:#FF6666--><span style="color:#FF6666"><!--/coloro-->*<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc--> I can imaging it being useful in bf1 engine mods, since the vehicular MG top guns are normally too sensitive when I try to use them... But for sniping vs closerange I have my doubts
Any enlightenment from your part will effectively help me (and other in the market for a mouse) to make a decision to step up the dpi or not...

mx500 and mx300 still kick much butt it seems <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" /> at 1000hz that is, so instead of upgrading me mouse I'm going to have a look at overclocking my USB first

1. no
2. yes
3. I've only used it in BF2142. It's more of a gimmick than being useful as I always calibrate my mouse speed in settings before I play and adjust to those settings no matter what.
4. no
Then I got the Diamondback perhaps a year ago. The buttons are nice and big and clicky. It makes me feel they will retain their clickiness more than my MX300, where the buttons would stick. I don't use the side buttons on my DB though. I do like how left-handers can use it.
So this makes me think I'll just stick to what I'm using rather than going after the "trophy" mice.
--Scythe--
so i went and impulse bought a cheap mouse from circuit city(?)...
logitech mx518 optical.. it's pretty nice.. it has 8 buttons but im not sure if theyre all mappable, i havent needed all of the buttons... it has a button above and below the scrolling wheel that adjust sensitivity.. it has 3 sensitivity settings... so that can be good for short notice adjustments, but i usually just keep it at the medium setting...
i had the intellimouse for 5 or 6 years before it died and i just got the mx518 about 4 months ago...
the mx518 doesnt skip or freeze except occasionally in natural selection, and i think that's a problem with ns, not the mouse... and even then it's a very rare occurrence...
I also have a optical USB wireless mouse I use for my laptop, the only notable thing about it is that it can run 6 months on 2 AAs, Good stuff.
From that test posted by ZeroByte, the MX500 has the best performance at extreme speeds for an relative old mouse... Go and read it its a quite interesting read about the sensors failure speeds
So I'm going to stick with my ascended MX500 1000Hz <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
Now to see if they are still for sale somewhere, since now my mom needs a new mouse, her mouseman iFeel is not working as good as it did anymore...
Also the first candidate was going to be the G5 (same mouse shell as the MX500), but its missing one thumb button, which I frequently use for browsing and weapons ingame... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

I've been using an MX700 since, oh, whenever they came out, I guess. It still works fine, wouldn't trade it for the world. Maybe for an MX1000 though.

I use one of those for my laptop (when it's on my desk anyway, not when I go out ofc), way too heavy imo.
Bought it randomly while I was at BestBuy, I was needing a new mouse anyways...
I have no idea about all the fancy specs of mice though, lazer seems to be the way things are going though?
Oh, and many buttons are nice.. lots and lots of buttons.

<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Not unless you're a high sensitivity player. 800 dpi should let you get about 70 degrees/inch on 1280x1024 with perfect precision.

I've heard they can be finicky about what surface you use, but are otherwise fine.

I've never used my adjustable sensitivity before.

Never had that issue at all.

1. Repeating what has been said, helps only if you're using a high sensitivity.
2. According to the ESReality test, no, at least when compared to their LED counterparts. I've never tried how my G3 reacts under fast movements, since I'm used to a fairly high sens. They are incredibly picky about the surface, though - plain Allsop raindrop mat works, larger one doesn't. QPad did not work with the G3 or Copperhead.
3. Most games allow you to change sensitivity anyway. DPI switching on-the-fly may be handy if you're doing photo manipulation or something, otherwise it's not that hot.
4. Dust hasn't been an issue thus far... but even a single hair will cause the G3 sensor to go completely berserk.
