<div class="IPBDescription">Haven't been here in forever!</div>Back from under the radar, we at CaliberMod thought it was time to make ourselves known again. As for our first update in 3 years on MODDB, I'd like to show 4 images, which are in fact brand new. Below we have images of the Regent, newly reskinned Vamin SMG, our Absentis lvl 1, and an in-game screenshot of one of our maps. Expect another update including an in-game video within the month.

Be sure to also check out our newly published interview with Planet Half Life. It's pretty extensive concerning gameplay elements - would be a good read for those who've forgotten us or who have just discovered us.

All the Caliber stuff looks really weird to me. I don't exactly get what the skinners are going for. There's wear and tear on the armor and the guns, but it's not around the edges or on raised parts, it's just splattered around. Everything is a dull gray color, with some splotches of dark and some splotches of less dark that seem to appear for no good reason. Some parts of an object are corroded and messed up, while others look like they just came off the assembly line. On the SMG's stock, for example, it looks like someone took a bunch of Photoshop brushes and went to town on a big flat area. It doesn't look like anything, it's just a grate texture that seems to magically fade out after a while, a weird plug thing for no reason, and a bunch of splotches where someone apparently spilled paint. I also see some kind of curly flowery pattern. Add that to the character models that look like they either have some UV stretching going on or just don't have the kind of detail that lets me see what I'm supposed to be seeing, and, well, I dunno. It's just not something I want to spend time looking at.

Props for giving that dude four arms (two of which are bigger than his legs) and magical floating feet and knees, though. That takes courage. His waist and leg joints are also way out of proportion, as are those things where his shoulders should be, but maybe he likes it like that.

Lol, just reading your post Tycho made me think of that mod... ED?...what was the name,.. IS? NS? I think it was a spinoff of NS...

Caliber... nothing suprises me yet. The models are kinda meh... same manga-anime theme as in many other mods... but ofcourse, Iam yet to actually play it, so no judgement <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
As Tycho said, the textures are wierd...

mm, the artistic style is definately a preferential thing. I'm not too partial to it either.

    meh.

Why? So much realism is out there that you could torrent any game with the same realistic look everywhere. Didn't Quake4 have the same thing going on?

Keep in mind we have no real skinners. Just working on what we've managed to teach other. And honestly, why not branch off into something new?

I think it looks somewhat nice, though i have to agree on the skinning part, it seems like they're trying too hard, and that makes the skin look too busy, as if the skinner is thinking "oh hey, that would look cool... and that too, and that!" with out thinking about if the three things will look cool together.

But as they've said <!--QuoteBegin- "Thatamos"+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE( "Thatamos")</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Simply put, we wanted to build a strong customization community behind it so the community could be a part of the overall growth of the mod.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    So i think it'll all work out in the end. Can't wait for it to be released <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Honestly, I would say it is. Especially since the majority of NSA split off into 3pointgames while the leader stayed as the leader of Caliber.

Quake 4 had nothing of the sort. The models and skins in Quake 4 looked like they do in just about every well-done professional game these days, which is to say, they had well done wear and tear that was applied in a logical manner, consistent and interesting colors, and well thought out normal and specular maps that gave the appearance of the object being constructed out of a real material, not out of splotches of color and funny designs.

The team's lack of any real skinners comes as no surprise to me. I would suggest they all take a good long look at <a href="http://st.burst.cc/tutorials.htm" target="_blank">this website</a> and practice for a bit before they take on something as ambitious as a mod.

So you're saying they should just drop a mod that they've all put a lot of work into just because it's not going to live up to your AAA texture expectations? : /

They should drop all the textures, yeah. Those things are butt ugly. I'm not playing any mod that looks like that, no matter how much fun it is. The rest of the modders can keep working though.

Well you're one in many that just keep stranded at sea - that's fine though, mods are just ways to express one's idea's and creativity.

You work on a mod? Or do you just criticize? I'm not being an ######, I'm just strictly curious.

I somewhat agree, if the texture's bad the model's ruined, I'd prefer good textures and low polycounts. Remember BrigadierWolf? He modelled/skinned off that concept and released the greatest models. Then again, you could pull it off, I loved the N64 after all no good textures there!

Ugh, no release date is the safe way, to avoid whining if it isn't on time but... WANT. NAO.

I don't know about "wah wah, poor textures, mod = over". The actual concept behind the mod seems pretty solid. I'll be downloading it and having a play without a doubt. Custom skins will spring up faster than sarcastic comments in /b/.

  • TychoCelchuuuTychoCelchuuu Anememone Join Date: 2002-03-23 Member: 345Members
Yeah, I think almost everything they've shown is in-game. I don't keep track of what's public and what isn't, though, so I can't say too much in case I reveal some sort of secret. Suffice to say that I've done like 20 models already and I'm one of like 6 modellers that he has working on the mod or something. It's packed with stuff.

Everything just seems to big bulky and dark. I won't care for the models if the gameplay is something new.
