    Heh...

    The city I live in is considering increasing the sales tax to 8.5%, at the same time abolishing property taxes.

    I own a home, so yay! But pity the fools who rent.... ... .. .

    It's not hard to believe. When I got my first paycheck, I was introduced to a bunch of whole new acronyms that deducted percentages from my bottom line. FICA, anyone?

    It's also a travesty. 40-45% of your income taken away is huge. That's almost on par with the heavily socialized nations of the UK, France, and Germany.

    Bragging about high sales tax is retarded. Besides, sales tax is an inherently regressive form of taxation that the working and middle class bear disproportionately.

    edit: seem to have momentarily forgotten this was the actual Discussion Forum. Well, truth be told I have forwarded this to a few friends and found the article quite interesting, as tax policy is and will always be a major issue come election time.. And behind all the back and forth and supposedly differing tax policies, it's.. 40%? I had no idea.

    Considering you guys in America pay for healthcare, dentalcare, education and all those other things we get in the UK under tax. You guys sound like you are getting a worse deal which is hard to believe and all, considering I live in Rip off UK.

    What we don't get in health care pays for thousands and thousands of government funded startup-companies and independent research that goes absolutely nowhere and is never expected to produce results. We also misappropriate money by the million. And, in my great state of West Virginia, (I say this with respectful disdain - I love my state but not it's current... uh... state of affairs?) Federal monies are used to keep people who have no intention of ever getting a job, but still draw welfare, pump out babies an exponential rate so that they can claim more dependents and get more welfare for that 4-wheeler or big screen, and pass on these values to their kids.
