<div class="IPBDescription">The best thing to happen to music since Napster</div>Like music? Like free music (streaming)?

Picky listener? Getting tired of what you're already listening to but everything else sucks?

<a href="http://www.pandora.com" target="_blank">http://www.pandora.com</a> is here for you!

Someone mentioned this to me last week while I was on a cruise. It's basically an online customized radio station that learns your preferences to find new music you'll like.

You start by naming a song or artist you like. It starts playing some of their songs until it finds a few of their songs you like then starts suggesting other songs. It's a simple thumbs up/down system. Thumbs up keeps playing the song and remembers the song as a safety in case you hit too many you don't like later. Thumbs down stops the song right now, and never plays it again ever. As you rate songs, the suggestions become increasingly closer to your tastes.

I've been playing around with it for a few hours, and already noticing that I'm disliking fewer and fewer songs. And I've never heard of half of these bands/songs that it's suggesting. Try it out, it's seriously awesome.

My starter station is <a href="http://www.pandora.com/?sc=sh194985231729426550" target="_blank">The Swizzle Zone</a> for those interested (work in progress obviously). But try your own station first.

Pretty cool. So theres no way to change your rating for a song? I wonder how long this will stay free or how long till it gets shutdown <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" /> Thanks for the link.

Yeah, Pandora.com is a really amazing service. I personally prefer last.fm myself in terms of results, but the Music Genome Project underpinning the Pandora system is very impressive.

It's sad you need a US zip code to register, but hey that didn't stop me :o (And yes, it works surprisingly well)

I *always* look up the address of the company I'm registering with and use their own zipcode.

if I can't find that zipcode, I just use the one for 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, Washington, DC. ( 20500 )

I'm a big fan of Pandora.

I use <a href="http://openpandora.googlepages.com/" target="_blank">Open Pandora</a> pretty exclusively to listen. I fear it's going to get bloated over time. For now, it's a fairly reliable substitute for having the website loaded.

Holy Choices Batman, Pandora integrated with last.fm. That's me sorted. I haven't been able to switch away from last.fm because I just love the social side of it too much, but now I can pandora and continue to feed my last.fm history. Thanks Wyz.

I never really tried Pandora... I just remember there was a program that ripped the streams, might have a look though.

Wow, Open Pandora is nice. Beats even my Pandora Opera widget.

I'd share my stations but it's easieset just to tell you guys my starting songs. "Danny the Dog" is a really good weird techno sort of thing, or something, but it's a gateway to a bunch of music you've never heard before. Breaking Benjamin's a real good band and there's some similar stuff on Pandora to find, and Bob Marley brings up all his stuff and his ilk. Unfortunately, picking any of the songs from the Halo 2 soundtrack doesn't find very much good stuff; it's mostly just weird experimental songs.

Heh, it's pretty funny how Pandora keeps playing the exact same music as in my playlist by just one artist name and some voting.

They are. Anything that is not english, not in there. If you're lucky you get some german rock, like rammstein, o.c. but the more unkown, the less likely you'll find something in there, except for english music.

But still. Run a station, pick the first 10 songs, check the bands out on www.radioblogclub.com, if you like them, create a new station from them and so on. After two hours you'll have at least fice new bands you can listen to.

As far as I can tell they've got one of those internet radio licenses which has all sorts of rules in place to separate it from a traditional music player where you play whatever you want whenever you want.

    It's what keeps it legal <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

It seems like it will be a endless circle, songs will never repeat. Unless I need to click dislike for every song, but them Im going to find one that I like. I just want to be able to listen to certain songs maybe a 2nd time at a later time, so far I havent had 1 song repeat.

I made two stations, and one of them was a chill station, and all it's been giving me is folk/banjo tunes that I'm trying to stray from but I keep going back into for some reason oh though I keep giving it a thumbs down.

A lot of stuff isn't on here sadly...

Depending on what subgenre of Electronica you want, try some DJ Tiesto, DJ Dean, Daft Punk etc to get some feel for it.
  • ByekaByeka Name changed from Freak83 Toronto Join Date: 2003-03-13 Member: 14484Members, Constellation
Supergreen X but I doubt that would be on there. Prodigy isn't exactly techno, more of electronica but I like techno and love Prodigy.
  • LikuLiku I, am the Somberlain. Join Date: 2003-01-10 Member: 12128Members
Electronica is the general term for electronic music, saying The Prodigy is electronica is being pretty vague. But you should hit up The Prodigy, especially "Out of Space" and "Voodoo People."

They're Techno though, hardcore if anything with a tad of Drum and Bass.
