So is this that game where you shoot people with a gun from a first person perspective? I've heard so much about it... I thought it was called Quaker or Quack or something like that though.

I didn't really like the first release at all. Has it changed significantly?

More specifically: are there any half decent maps for it yet? And did they make the virtual reality parts less clumsy and laggy?

All of the maps have been reworked. In addition there are nine maps total, in addition with four more of the new game type, PhistBall.

    Woot! Downloading now.

If you're going to download, I suggest the link to some guy's ftp on their page. I'm getting 600 kb from that.

For the record, he's referring to the "Fatboy Fist" weapon that the heavy armour has.

I played this a little bit and I didn't enjoy it any more than the first beta release. Weapons just don't have any oomph.

I think he's refering to the fact that you must make several exact shots on an enemy to kill them rather then randomly spraying and hoping that a random bullet strikes their head and gets you a kill.

But yes, dystopia is fantastic and with the new maps there is no excause for you not playing this mod other then the fact you are used to memorzing weapon scatters so you can get headshots in CS.

Heh. It's all about personal preference, I think. Honestly? I don't like this mod. I agree that the weapons really don't seem to possess any kind of physical <i>presence</i>.. they all look like cookie-cutter FPS guns that go bang.

Let me put it to you this way. Guns, the ones in the game, are supposed to be deadly. Right? A gun is a deadly weapon. Well, no matter how you slice it, they don't feel like deadly weapons. The weapon design is unexciting, the sounds are uninspired, and the necessity to waste at least a quarter or even a third of your total ammunition in order to kill ONE enemy player with these "deadly weapons" doesn't help the game's already flaccid combat.

Say what you need to say in order to make yourself feel better <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> In the near-future, until we develop some kind of super-alloy that is both light enough to wear and strong enough to defeat large, high-velocity projectiles, we will STILL be able to kill a man with a single gunshot to the head. Even if his newfangled helmet can stop a .50cal bullet (this same kind of bullet we have had since last century), the sheer trauma of the impact would be enough to incapacitate, and probably kill.

The concept of this game is intriguing. But the execution (the game) just isn't very exciting. Armored guys bunnyhopping and shooting each other with potato guns? I'm fine, thanks.

People have survived gunshot wounds to the head, and I'm not talking about glancing shots or with a peashooter either.

I tried it, I still despise it as much as the previous.

The draw to it for me was the whole realword/virtualworld idea, and I thought it was awesome... then I found out that very few people actually get to play inside computerland and most of the time you are just doing things like any other team based shooter.
The limited amount of deckers also tends to result in the same thing as the new-comm cycle syndrome. Few may do it, so you shouldn't do it if you don't know how, and you don't know how because you never get to try. Don't mention learning in a LAN game either, that doesn't train you in cyber-combat which is quite a bit different from any other game.

The other issue is that the flow of the game is too much of a roller coaster. You spend a bunch of time waiting to spawn, and then when you find the action (maybe another 20 seconds getting to it) it's generally a big clash between many people on both teams that lasts a short time before everyone is dead and you are back in spawn queue.
If fights lasted longer or spawning was quicker, it would be much better in terms of pacing.

Yes indeed, they have. Would you also educate us, emperor_awesome, as to the exact percentage of people who are directly shot in the head with a modern firearm, survive in such a manner? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/asrifle.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::asrifle::" border="0" alt="asrifle.gif" />

No I bet it's even more than that, like 90%

    If not, then why would they make games like Dystopia? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/asrifle.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::asrifle::" border="0" alt="asrifle.gif" />

Nonsense.. It's because of the scientific truth of non-fatal gunshots to the head.

Lawl, United States citizens can't take a bullet to the head.

I guarantee you that any able-bodied canadian male can not only take one bullet wound to the head and keep on ticking, but an astounding <i>seven</i> before the mighty canadian is felled.
  • eedioteediot Join Date: 2003-02-24 Member: 13903Members
Considering the exchange rate, however, your 7 canadian bullets are equivalent to only .7 american bullets

My theory is dashed! I accept my defeat. It appears that so-called "gameplay" is the reason for the cranial invulnerability of the players in Dystopia.
