  It's good for the future of those developers, it helps promote smaller gaming companies to form. What's wrong with the initiative? You don't like the platform then that is your problem, but it is a good all round scheme.

  Im pretty sure "That's sick!" is more of a joke about UT. The announcers going "SICK!" when you get on a killing spree, etc.

  Sick means good. Like "that's wicked" or "that's crazy" or "that's twisted," it takes a word that usually means something bad and uses it to mean something good, like "awesome" or "cool."

  "Wicked Sick" (for example) is used basically in the same context as "awesome" or similar.
  
  I do think this is an interesting move from Epic, but I'm not sure how many mod authors are going to bother.
