I don't get all these people complaining about Half-life 2 just because it's popular. I haven't seen an original game since psychonauts, and even that was just mario and day of the tentacle on LSD. If you don't enjoy it, don't pay money for it -- who cares about graphics on a game you already hate? I know I didn't pay money for doom just because it had a great lighting system.

Edit: That is to say, I didn't spend money on Doom full stop. I didn't enjoy the game and wouldn't have enjoyed it more by paying money to broadcast the fact that I'm the proud owner of a flashlight and a pair of hands that can open doors like nobody's business.

I don't think anyone's complaining about HL2 really. We all know it was an awesome game. We all know it had the best gfx when it came out, and it still has some of the most pleasing aesthetics and art direction in PC gaming. Rover attempted to devalue this by saying "atmosphere != graphics" but in the end, what comes out looking better, a game with outstanding art direction and execution, or a game with ZOMG NORMAL MAPPING!!!!!!!!!

SO whoever will not admit that the environments of HL2 ep1 are more visually satisfying than most of the games out right now, you're probably dumb. NOTICE: I worded that sentence very carefully. Most of us, the ones who value artistic execution over ZOMG GFX!!! care more about the overall environment within the game, not just the way normal mapping and self shadowing make a brick wall look.

Take note that I never said graphics make the entire gaming experience, I was just pointing out that the statement of HL2 being graphically the best game available atm was false.

On another note: who's up for some valve hatemail for delaying it? ^___^

Right, I know what you meant. HL2 was not the ZOMG GFX'est game ever.

I just want to say, on the subject of graphics and games, that the Source engine is far better than the Doom3 engine. My reason: High-resolution textures and ambient light. And that's scraping the surface! (Source engine has a cargo ship-load of features) What does D3 engine have? Realtime shadows and funky monitors, and...erm...lots of black.

Out of interest, what first person shooters look better than Half-Life Episode 1 with HDR? HDR & bloom rock my socks (no-one better link that VGCats comic, cos it doesn't apply here).

Actually one of my major gripes with the source engine are the textures. They look fantastic from 6 feet away, but any closer and they just become so... ugly. I wish they really did have high resolution textures that faded in as you zoomed closer, then faded out as you got further away so you don't get the ugly lines and artifacts of high-res textures at a distance.

That sentence lacks truth, you are describing the features of the D3 engine you saw through the D3 game. You aren't describing any of the technical elements that are available to the D3 engine over the Source engine.

EDIT: I remember KFS doing an "Eclipse" keyhole I think it was in the D3 engine and it looked like a better environment and overall esthetically pleasing than what I'd imagine a 'Source'd' version of the area would. Even without Sourcing and comparing the area, the look and feel of the area was still raising the bar in aesthetics, it also did not have the "OMG FLASHLIGHT" feel to it which people, such as Merkaba fall in to the trap of assuming when you hear Doom 3 engine.

You took me too seriously, Thal. You could argue which engine is better than the other...but I suppose my post was an expression of opinion rather than what I consider to be fact. I just don't think that the Doom3 engine visuals are as nice as Source, though perhaps I just haven't seen the engine in the right hands yet. I DO like the D3 engine, but I just think Source is better!

And my comment about the blackness...it's true. Consider that every light you add to a room makes the game run slower, and that the engine currently supports no form of ambient light. That means that every part of the map that isn't in the direct path of a light will be pitch black, so regardless of whether it is Doom3 or Prey or Quake4, that's still a lot more black compared to other engines.

For the record, it was you who said "OMG Flashlight!", not me. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

So, you know what this reminds me of? The suppression of free thought in HL2. What do you guys think? Let's stay on topic.

You must have played a different game than I did, because I never saw any thought supression, although to be fair the Stalkers might have been thought-controlled at some point.

Syntax from a different language; common problem for non-native speakers.

Back on topic, the boxes are probably just mockups.
