<div class="IPBDescription">I wanna learn to fraps!</div>so yeah, I finally have a computer capable of running fraps, but I know nothing about putting a movie together on a computer. using fraps is the easy part, but are there any good free programs out there for editing and splicing a movie together, and are they easy to use?

Don't use fraps, don't use free programs - they're both terrible.

Windows movie maker comes with your version of XP and is for very simple and easy software. I had NEVER touched a video editing software in my life and learned how to use this in about half an hour. I would show you what I was able to make with it except my friends in it don't want it shown to the general public =/.

Nothing wrong with fraps... Also its not free if you want the fully functional program... And if you want free movie editing software, the closest thing is indeed windows moviemaker as said by Freak83. But don't expect advanced features.

    For compressing I'd go for virtual dubb (also free <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />)

Actually, I believe there's a "Home" version of Vegas that's not really pricy:

    <a href="http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/products/vegasfamily.asp" target="_blank">http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/products/vegasfamily.asp</a>

Windows Movie Maker is very easy to use, but it has a strange tendency to close itself at times. So save often.

Vegas is a very, very, very good NLE (non-linear editor, which is what you probably want). I highly recommend it. Also, if you're making a game video, fraps is very useful for capturing audio, if you're into that.

    Windows Movie Maker not good enough for you Jmms? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" />

No but I hear you had great success with it

Perhaps if you learned to edit before jumping into vegas with both feet your movie would have been better.

Speaking of "learning to edit", your video is the only one that I've seen with a <i>Known errors/issues </i>list (lol?)

OP: Try Vegas, you'll like it. Ignore BadJesus if you appreciate your sanity

If my hard drive hadn't exploded (literally, it caught fire for some unknown reason) then I'm sure I would have been able to fix the editing errors and actually encode it properly. As it happened, the only reason the video was released at all was because I had a low quality preview avi rendered to another hard drive, which suffice to say resulted in either forcing me to release a video that was still work in progress, or to give up on the project.

Just FYI Jmms, Vegas is only worth using for the velocity envelope tool and syncing the audio/video - literally everything else I use other programs for (soundforge/after effects/virtualdub/3ds max/photoshop).

Anyway I think its [/derail] time Jmms, grab me on IRC if you want to continue this.

Fraps is actually quite amazing. Try name another app that does better ingame recording. Ive always used it with games that have no /console recording. As long as you have alot of free space and a reasonable "new" computer, fraps caps quite good at 30fps when capturing realtime even.

Adobe Premiere is the one ill recommend for editing.

Lags your game prolly better with 2 proccesors

Adobe Premiere and Sony Vegas are really the two best video editing programs, but if you're really serious about editing then Vegas is the route to go imo - I'm not sure what other peoples workflows are with movies but I only use my video editing program (Vegas) to literally put the audio/video together and sync it using velocity envelopes (which are really, really cool by the way). The reason I use Vegas for this instead of Premiere, is that firstly its just what I've always used, but from what I hear Premiere's velocity envelope tool is a complete pain in the ###### to use.
Other than that, I use Sony Soundforge if I have any audio editing to do (which is rare) but once I have all of the video sync'd to the music, I export using a lossless codec (I'd recommend Huffyuv, which coincidentally is good for compressing the raw footage to keep filesize down) and bring it into Adobe After Effects for the effects editing (which funnily enough, AE totally rocks Vegas at). Then when I'm finished in AE, I export again with a lossless codec, then compress with VDub/meGui.
