Music discussion!

I don't mean a flame fest, or any other reason to get up peoples backs. I mean a thread where open minded music discussion could lead to ones future CD purchases.
I mean... I listen to all the musics. Lately I've been listening to <a href="http://www.saddle-creek.com/bands/brighteyes/" target="_blank">Bright Eyes</a>. I got <a href="http://www.amazon.com/letting-off-Happiness-Bright-Eyes/dp/B00000HXU7/sr=8-7/qid=1168628645/ref=pd_bbs_sr_7/102-0478184-2197760?ie=UTF8&s=music" target="_blank">letting off the happiness</a> for christmas and I think their biggest seller is <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Im-Wide-Awake-Its-Morning/dp/B00070FV0M/sr=8-1/qid=1168628645/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-0478184-2197760?ie=UTF8&s=music" target="_blank">I'm wide awake it's morning</a>. Now admittedly it's a little depressing. Music of the heartbroken variety can be uplifting and that's really what bright eyes is all about. There are elements of country music (a loose usage of the genre), but for the main part it's acoustic, melodic and peaceful stuff. If you like Damien Rice, James blunt, Jack Johnson or David Gray then you might want to give it a try.
If you really like Jack johnson you should get into <a href="http://www.alomusic.com/" target="_blank">ALO</a>. Jack johnson has made them more popular, but no-one in the UK knows em. Just as cool (if not cooler) than Jack, awesome musicians and relaxed summer vibes.
If you're into your hip hop then I'd look into <a href="http://www.youngbloodbrassband.com/site/site_index.html" target="_blank">young blood brass band</a>. Really dynamic, agressive brass band with a flaming fast vocalist. Wonderful mixture that works so well. I'm listening to their new album 'is this a riot?' You can even listen to it on the site there.

I find my 'thing' lately is electronica and trip-hop with female vocalists... recent happy discoveries have been The Knife, and Ada, but then of course there's Bjork, and Ladytron, and Portishead, and the first Sneaker Pimps album...
when I get home maybe I'll sort my music by what I've rated 5 stars and post from there =p
I've also been checking out other brass bands, such as Big Sam's Funky Nation, Brass 4 (off of <a href="http://www.myspace.com/brass4" target="_blank">MySpace</a> is the only place I found them =/.. if you can get it to load, check out "Open Up Wide"... lots of energy), and other brass bands, especially the funk/jazz stuff.
I've also been getting into other brass-related music groups, like Dallas Brass, Howard Johnson, old brass recordings, and, of course, Oystein Baadsvik (<a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/tubaad" target="_blank">YouTube Profile</a> and <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHMyrhilkdo" target="_blank">one of my fav pieces</a>) who is as great a person as he is a player (really wish I could have caught the Carnage performance last month, but I had a final that day <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" /> ).
I've also been pulling out some of the vinyls in the music library at my school. If you are interested in something fun/happy to listen to, check out Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass Band. I usually pop on Four Sider just to relax whenever I've had a long day.
...and I could go on and on and on...

Also listening to Dead to Me - Cuban Ballerina. It's fast catchy punk pop with a, often political, meaning behind it somewhere.
Also, Streetlight Manifesto's version of "Keasbey Nights". Favourite ska album of recent years. Fast strong vocals, good horn section, etc.
Some of you may notice a patter in good desert rock. All cookies to him who gets it.
Also worthwile is <a href="http://www.last.fm/user/TychoCelchuuu/" target="_blank">my own profile</a> which vastly overstates the amount of Beatles music that I listen to but is otherwise accurate.
I'll listen to almost everything, except rap.
If you like all that Qotsa stuff try <a href="http://www.deathfromabove1979.com/" target="_blank">death from above 1979</a> which have sadly stopped playing. Great music.
And for all you mars volta fans that don't know where to go next Try <a href="http://www.thefalloftroy.com/" target="_blank">fall of troy</a> (messy) or <a href="http://www.dillingerescapeplan.com/" target="_blank">dillinger escape plan</a> (messier).
Just trying to link things together here when I mention a band but it's impossible when I mention <a href="http://www.cakemusic.com/" target="_blank">CAKE</a>. They are just the coolest band and no one seems to know of them (in UK at least). The fact that I'm listening to them at 20 and was at 10 is significant to me. Everyone I know likes their music once introduced to it.

Yea, I don't really listen to anything I don't like immediately, so my opinion can pretty much be disregarded. I hates it anyway.
My tastes honestly haven't changed much over the years, though they are taking on a funny bipole of popular and completely obscure music.
On the one hand, I'm a huge Radiohead fan. Have been since the day I "obtained" Optimistic off of Napster. Now I own every one of their albums, plus a few singles (My Iron Lung, I Might Be Wrong.) I can listen to pretty much any of their songs, with exception of a few VERY out there tracks (like songs off ComLag, and Pulk/Pull. Just a bunch of noise) I can listen to almost anything in their collection. It's neat to go through the years of albums, from Pablo Honey to Hail to the Theif and see a progression from simple distortion and vocals to absolutely insane multi-guitar riffs and electronic blends.
Another popular band I listen to regulary is STP, Stone Temple Pilots. Nice hard-rock sound, varying degrees of anger based upon album and track.
Furthering my hard-rock side is Alice in Chains. Deep vocals, all out grunge rock. "Rooster" is one of the best war songs I have EVER heard.
Recently, I've also picked up listening to Muse. After seeing the video to Knights of Cydonia (cowboys with lasers!), and seeing how cheap Showbiz was (eight dollars!), I decided I'd give a few albums a go. While their sound may be a bit high-pitched and somewhat simplistic, towing the line of emo, specifically in Absolution, they are still a good all-around band. The guitar riffs are fun and easy, yet catchy. Lyrics are a bit one-track with paranoia and love, but so far I haven't been disappointed by any of their albums; Absolution, Black Holes and Revelations, and Showbiz.
Throw some Pearl Jam in there, and not just Ten, and that about finishes off my popular side.
Now I also like obscure music, mainly in the field of jazz and electronic.
Way back when I started college, I picked up two Mr Scruff CDs. Light, airy electronics with somewhat unnecessary vocals. I liked the electronics, but not the vocals.
Which brings me to Amon Tobin. A nice drum-driven electronic sound that goes especially well with gaming. Bricolage and Permuation are the two i've listened to.
Another band in the vein of Amon Tobin is The Cinematic Orchestra. Very neat jazz-electronic mix. Man Behind The Movie Camera is a great album, mixing a bit of techno into a jazzy sound. This band can be lumped into another, Squarepusher. Many overlayed instruments to make neat intstrumental tracks.
Finally I'd like to say a few words about Boards of Canada, another sleepy-time band for me. Their first album, Music Has the Right to Children is a hit-or-miss collection of looped and repetitive tracks with a few gems. Geogaddi is a less vocal-driven album that starts to get into a groove of electronics and more varied tracks. But their shining star, so far, is The Campfire Headphase. A beginning-to-end listenable journey of minimal vocals and spacey electronic experementations. Very good fall-asleep album, or just a good album to chill to.
And that's my quick-summary of my musical tastes. Drugs not required!

Agalloch. Atmospheric black folk. Though, their latest album is fairly rocky. Their guitarist came into where I work one day and I talked to him a while. He's pretty rad, too. Good band.

You've probably heard of them but "Kosheen" fits this bill perfectly.
Also Dragonforce.
Anyway, my current 3 CDs in my stereo (stereo? STEREO?), which I adore and think all go very well together, are:
Mastodon - Blood Mountain ~ high-paced metal concept album; amazing guitarmanship & drumming, really really nicely crafted songs that are just...intense and make my head sway and bob like some prehistoric bird listening to trance. The album marks the journey of someone climbing a mythological mountain, meeting strange and terrifying creatures and testing the strength of the character's will.
Isis - In The Absense of Truth ~ I have no idea what this album is about, aside from what is apparent in the title. It's slow, melodic, heavy, tearing, soothing. On first listen, every song sounds the same - but after many more listens, each song is definately unique and has its own flavour. Love it.
Tool - 10,000 Days ~ It's been out for a long time, and I'm still listening to it at least once a week. Just brilliant artistry. I know many Tool fans are let down by this album, but I really think it is their most powerful yet - although lacking in the psychedelicness of previous albums, it makes up for it with its potent emotion and charge. It's somewhat of a mixture of the previous two listed bands - the energy of Mastodon, and the patience of Isis, melded into an epic journey of emotional discharge.
Those are my Big Three right now; other bands I listen to at the moment are Pink Floyd, 27, and the Ghost In The Shell soundtrack (all of them, they're all brilliant).

lastly 404, have you been browsing my mp3 folder?? you seem to have come from the same route as myself in terms of artists and progression (scarey). Aquire Amon Tobins - Out from out where, and supermodified <b>immediatly</b>. out from out where is just so far advanced from his early work, and your comment about it being gaming music is spot on, you know he did the sound track to Splinter Cell 3? he has a new album out in a few months that I am really hyped about, but then, he is my personal jesus.
you seem to like the music in the ninja tune vein, have you tried Hexstatic? try youtubing Hexstatic - Ninja Tune, or Perfect Bird. well, pretty much all of ninjatune is great.
warp is also good, my favourite producers there are Autechre, but they followed alot of their warp labelmates into obscurity instead of keeping the groove from their first 2 or 3 albums. (Autechre - Incunabula is a great album, as is Amber, after that its a bit meh).
Personally I also enjoy a little Mike Patton, particularly Faith no More - Angle Dust (jizzlobber is pretty damn heavy), Mr Bungle - California ( mr bungle in a 50s throwback kinda mood ), and one song in particular from Fantomas, the Twin Peaks tune on the Directors Cut album rocks my socks.

Love Eric Clapton, as I grew up listening to him ( my dad loved him ), and also pink floyd for the same reason.

I used to be into ulver quite a bit. When i first heard Nattens Madrigal, I just couldn't listen to it at all, but once I listened past the production quality, there's some great music behind there.
<b>Cynic </b>are a great jazz-influenced metal band, they only ever released one album; Focus, but it was pure genius. Sean Malone on bass, and Sean Reinert on Drums makes for an awesome combination (Gordian Knot, Aghora).
Speaking of <b>Aghora</b>, they are definitely worth checking out if you like good music.
I've been getting into a bit of <b>Al DiMeola</b> lately, mainly his Splendido Hotel album, some great tracks on there. Passion Grace & Fire with DiMeola, McLaughlin and De Lucía is unbelievable.
<b>Orphaned Land</b> are a great Progressive Metal band from Israel, incorporating a lot of influences from their own traditional music. <i>Definitely</i> worth a listen.
<b>Bozzio Levin Stevens</b>, consisting of Terry Bozzio on drums, Tony Levin on Bass/Chapman Stick and Steve Stevens on Guitar are great (just like anything Bozzio has ever played in, minus his upcoming work with Korn)

Tool's stuff definitely takes some getting used to, and to me, a lot of their albums still mesh together so well...that it sounds like rehashing, rather samey music. I can't tell the difference between most of the songs on their most popular album, Lateralus, and on their newer one at least half are more ambience with thirty seconds of music than anything else- and the title, album selling track is obviously a wannabe-schism, just to fuel the mainstream masses into buying the album.
If you're looking for a modern-day Prog fix, The Mars Volta's a better choice, if you ask me(<3).
