p_models and sprites are easy to force consistency on (like around the scope .sprs for sniper rifles in most mods). Some p_models in games like CS can be bypassed, but they have to meet certain specifications. Basically this prevents cheating by methods like giving other people 50 foot long guns that you can see coming a mile away. However, w_models and v_models are fair game becuase they can't really be used to cheat.

And yes, I think he meant "still".

Actually, Blahman's 1.03b test server even enforced V_MODEL consistency. My guess is that's it only to keep a control for the testing of 1.03b. If people had custom skins and they complained about bugs, people would assume it's the skins and not the game.

Then stay off beta servers.

Now I keep hearing about consistency errors on unchanged models. I think it's a 1.03 bug.
• KatsuroKatsuro Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 4809Members
Why the hell would they lock V-models? thats retarded.
• MausMaus Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 5599Members
Well, remember how Relic25 was a bit miffed at everyone wanting to change the game right from the start? Maybe this is the Dev team's way of making sure you play NS, instead of Aliens or Starcraft.

I wouldn't leave, if I want starcraft and alien models, I go play starcraft and AvP or one of the sidescrolling alien games. Why would they have to abandon the mod if everyone left? Not that everyone will. I know for one I am keeping my models the way they are, and am sticking mostly the cool reskins, conversions are kind of stupid anyway.
• SovKhanSovKhan Join Date: 2002-11-05 Member: 7099Members
i would leave. its dumb to lock out stuff like that.
• sendersender Join Date: 2002-11-12 Member: 8337Members
I think this would suck. I love my alien replacment for the skulk model.

On the other hand, if anyone here has played tribes and seen the "Happy Flag" cheat or any other model changing cheat you know why this could be bad.

For example, what if someone skinned mines bright green. They wouldn't be as useful as they are now (skulks could see the ones on the ground much easier).

yah but what if this, or what if that? i dont care you can always tell when something around the corner anyways, i'd like to have starcraft models and ill be damned if a bunch of no skill losers screw up everything.

the team should just set it up so that models they like from the modeling forum are allowed and they give you an ingame system to choose which model pack you use.

there has been no popular game(mod) that i have played that has never been edited form outside ppl its just like that ppl will always sumthin driffrent no matter wat but u have to fell sry for the modelers in the team there work being changed so early in the stages

name one pc game that lasted long that did not allow modifications and then name one game that lasted 5 years becoz of mods
• ImaTargetImaTarget Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 3415Members
well a total model enforcement would really suck. let the people play the way they want to. I like the black marines much better then the standard ones, i have a better feeling with em, so why not let me? i understand that they are trying to stop cheating before it starts, you should just not overdo it. I dunno, maybe a "size" check for the models would be enough (if possible) so the models cant be "too big" but still allows models wich fit in the standard "boxes".
• MausMaus Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 5599Members
It'd also be somewhat hypocritical. Good job Valve didn't decide to force everyone to play the game as they released it. We'd have no DoD/CS/NS/Firearms/ToD/&c...

Not sure what's up with the model consistency in the 1.03 beta patch. I didn't realize Flayra was planning something like that.

I do know that we have been having problems with exploits such as people swapping out the bite view model for the skulks with one which doesn't close, which greatly increases the skulks effectiveness much more then intended. And I'm sure there will be other exploits or cheats that people will devise through model swapping, and Flayra may just have been trying to stop that before it gets out of hand.

But, while I can say that the team would prefer to see more creativity in the custom models as opposed to just all the AvP type conversions that are going on right now, I don't think we are wanting to completely limit people from being able to use custom models.

Please, just wait and see where this is all headed before everyone gets all up in arms about this.

Ooh, ooh, let me try this whole 'sarcasm' thing!!

This is SUCH a big deal! It is TOTALLY worth getting all upset about, especially because this is based upon VOLUMES of CERTIFIED information and nothing that even remotely resembles speculation! I mean, this game has been out for SUCH a long time, I'm sure that every little change or adjustment made now is going to be CARVED IN STONE!

Everyone: relax.

enforcing V_s are only useful in NS cause of the skulk and lerk bite.

I'm thinking of leaving these forums since the release. Where did all the hostile 6-year old rebels come from? Please stop posting your compleately uninteresting opinions and go with the flow. NS rocks just as much, if not much more, with original models! End of story?!
