Steam only?

Is it possible to buy Natural Selection 2 in stores?
Or only over steam?
Because i hear you made Natural Selection 1 for testing your game idea.
So i think you think before you start NS2, how you sell your second "real" game.
We had in germany problems with normal banking (non creditcard) buying over steam <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

    Probably around 5,000.

At its peak, I think it might have reached 50,000

not for steam, that is the bullish.
Ebay works fine, but with steam and germany cant buy...
But it would be great if natural selection 2 come in stores.

    @Beasty
there is a big fanbase for ns...but the most people wait for NS2.

    Quote from steam:

"PayPal is not currently accepted in Germany.
    Please choose another payment method."

I am not sure, how steam identifies the country.
Could be IP, could be registered email. Maybe it is the OS. Anyone know this?
  • RasulisRasulis Join Date: 2003-01-29 Member: 12910Members
It is through the IP system. Any one can register for an e-mail any where, and the OS doesn't matter really in relaying this info.

An IP is like the address of a computer. Country, State, City, and so on.

You can buy Red Orchestra in stores; and that had a similiar size fanbase if you compare when the two were at its peak. (In MOD format)

    Are you 100% certain?

Cause if it is through ip, you could just spoof it, or buy it through a proxy <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

i think the current plan is a steam only release.
but you never know... two weeks ago i saw "The Ship" as retail boxes in stores. (it too started as HL1 mod and went to be a commercial Source mod, much like NS but only with a lot less fans of the original mod)

and regarding the buying through steam: gabe newell already confirmed at the Leipzig GDC 06 that direct wire transfer will come to steam. <a href="http://steamreview.org/posts/paypalandwire/" target="_blank">see</a>

RO also won a contest that gave them two free engine licenses and a modest amount of cash split up amongst a couple of developers, so it's not like they're on the same playing-field. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

I also wonder what would be the price of the game? Not only i`m not keen on buying things online, i hope it won`t be very expensive too. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" />

The first release will be on Steam. After that we might go into retail, depending on sales and the deal we can get on the engine.

cerberus: We can only estimate but we think our numbers are much bigger then those.

I'm in the South East of the UK. I've never seen Red Orchestra sold in store.

Obviously that includes guests, although only at a small certain period of time when the forums first came back so, your estimate Cerberus does seem 20-40x too small <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Gamespy stats can't be takn as accurate, as much of their data comes exclusively from people who have the GameSpy Arcade program installed, which then sweeps for installed games, and reports back to the central servers. The only true way would be to get stats direct from Valve, through Steam usage on individual accounts over a fixed timespan. Then you'd get accurate results.

Remember, not all servers show up all the time, due to routing issues

Steam says 460 NS players currently while Counter-Strike has 150k. I doubt NS hits over 1000 at peak times and certainly less than 2000 play it with any sort of regularity.

Our total audience is much bigger then the number of people playing at any given instant. For instance, I'm loved Sacrifice and would probably buy Sacrifice II if it came out, but haven't played the original in years.

The fact that just under 60,000 accounts have been made for this <b>forum</b> shows me there's a big fan base. (whoo!)

Among my gamer/geek friends, almost everybody knows about NS. Not all of them have played it or continued to, but it is certainly very well known for a 3rd party mod.

NS is. Although NS2 has always come with the 'Hopefully retail game which will cost' message.

ns has a very nitch group of players since its so mature. I wouldnt expect there to be anywhere near as many players as for cs or any other mod that has a much smaller learning curve
