360 or Wii?

<div class="IPBDescription">what do I get?</div>soo I have about $200 in best buy store credit, and need advice on which system to buy.

the xbox 360 is a well-established system with a lot of good games out, seems to have more video power than the Wii even though it's a year old, and it's (mostly) backwards compatible with the first xbox, which I never had, so that's also a plus.

the wii however is the hot new toy of the season with the unique controller, and it's backed by a company that tends to come out with innovative and fun new games.

I kinda want to get a 360 and play gears of war and dead rising and all the other cool games out there, but the Wii is new and unique and it tempts me.

which system would you guys suggest a relatively poor guy such as myself run out and purchase?

Personally I would get a Wii.

Yeah, the games mentioned for 360 are fun, but its sort of a dead end. Youve played essentially the same games before. It just so happens they are a bit more refined as with more processing power and graphics you get 'bigger content' so to speak. I dunno, but I suppose thats why I never really saw the point of this next gen until the Wii. Youve got the wiimote, classic controller, and GC controller. No, the system isn't as powerful, but who the hell cares at this point? I care about having fun, and the Wii is offering a hell of a lot more than that. Oh, and don't forget how the system looks like Nintendo wants to emphasize the hell out of multiplayer madness.

So it basically comes down to this:
Would you rather be playing Dead Rising / Gears / Halo / what else is there good for 360 again after a YEAR?

    or

Flailing about with your friends on Super Smash Brothers, Zelda, etc. Hell, even as simple a demo as Wii sports is, its the most fun I've had on a console in years.

Omg, system war has spilled into NS forum!

Personally, it's much easier to find a 360. If I can walk into a store and get a Wii, I'll probably do it, given the price.

If you looking for just 1 of them, I'd say the wii. It might not have a large range of games now, but it will have Nintendo's Franchises, and quite importantly I think, it will be a good party game platform, and with some of Nintendo's Franchises, it will also has good singleplayer games.

Also, know that SSBB will have Online support, and so will Metroid Prime 3.. So I don't think it will be lacking in the online department :S, though the X360 has much more to offer in terms of demos and trailers, and features a voice chat system, Wii doesn't do this atm.

hehe I don't really wanna spark a system war (I think there's already a bit of that in a few other threads anyway), I'm just trying to be practical and find out which system will get me the most fun for my buck :> you guys are definitely making me lean toward the Wii (if I can manage to find one in stock this century). Fun is definitely more important to me than graphics and stuff, especially since I don't even have an HDTV anyway.

Just a heads up on X360, Dead Rising at least has mushy text when not on a HDTV, other titles might have the same problem :X

Xbox 360 for a stable (I can't believe I'm saying that :x) gaming platform. It's pretty cheap, has lots of updates out for it now, lots of good games and some good accessories.

Wii for the "newness". If you want to experience a new gaming console, decent graphics, crappy launch titles and a soon-to-be-gimmicky wiimote, go for the Wii. It's also very cheap. I'd say... most bang for you buck.

And all this came from someone who owns a PS3. :x But man, I played Gears of War last night... blew me away!

<3 my Wii. Twilight Princess is wonderful, and I can't wait to see what comes out a year down the pipe.

There's a Crystal Chronicles planned for the Wii which I am super-psyched for.

and a soon-to-be-gimmicky wiimote<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->I'd say the "gimmicky" ness depends on how the motion sensor is being used, sure if it's just used an a button, okay, but if it simulates something on screen, either by controlling it completely, or just resembling a move your make, I find it very nice, and probably won't grow old anytime soon, if ever :S

Example of "button" use, swordslashing in Zelda, you just shake the wiimote a bit, could easily have been done with a button at no loss.

Example of simulation, in the coming Metroid Prime 3, you can get a grapplehook, the grapplehook can be used to grab thing naturally, but also pull them apart, like rubble, or the shield of an opponent... the pull effect is done by pulling the nunchuck back. How it this simulation you ask? The thing is, most people hold the nunchuck in the left hand, Samus' grapplehook is on her left arm.. ie. you sort of make her movement, making for more immersion - and naturally you aim with the wiimote in the game - which is in your right hand, and her gun is on her right arm <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

Though, in defense, when used as a button, it makes for more accessable buttons, as now your fingers are not doing all the "button-pressing", but your wrist/arm also does some of it :S.

One thing that won't grow old though, is the pointer..

remind me of some more of the awesome 360 games that were released over the last year =p I know gears of war and dead rising are widely accepted as awesome. rainbow 6 looks nice too. what other 'must-have' 360 games are there?

it's too bad the wii doesn't have a built-in dvd player. I know most people say having non-video game functions in a game console is unimportant, but my ps2 has been my dvd player since it came out =p poor thing is on its last legs now though.

DiscoZombie, Not sure about X360 games lineup as I've just gotten one myself, and haven't looked too much into it. However I know that Ninja Gaiden is an ace game for the old Xbox, and it is compatible with X360 in the US and Europe. And nowadays it's cheap as well <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

    Get a 360.

Ive got a 360, and its awsome.

Cant speak for the wii, as i dont have it, but i wouldnt get it right now.

Looking at the wii; it looks like its going to be faced with the same problem that the gamecube had: Lack of 3rd party support. The first half of next year looks good, after that, the 3rd party support drops off the map. Theres a good chance it could turn into another gamecube; and you cant survive on 1st party games alone.

    Good idea.

Though for me I'd choose the Wii.

I'm a game person, I'd pick PS3 or some other console, if they made Xenosaga IV(if they made it) for the console, or some other game I like (Star ocean 4, VP3, *MGS4, Persona 4 if it has gun shooting self action in it too) on that console.

*I'm a storyline kind of person. As long as the gameplay is not frustrating or dull<i>(Dot hack games for example are dull)</i> I'll enjoy the gameplay, but ONLY if the storyline is worthy will I enjoy the gameplay as well. Anyway, <b>I'd rather just save $500-600 and just read the storyline for MGS4</b>, or watch uploaded MGS4 cutscenes, like I did with Metal Gear portable ops <i>(See my sig for videos of cutscenes in MGS: PO, click on the person who uploaded it and search through his videos to see all of them).
    </i>
I'd choose the Wii because I had some fun times on it playing Trauma Center: SO(I don't own a Wii, I played someone elses game and console) and other games.

Honestly, these past generations of console didn't really offer anything different except different games. I don't really see much difference in them, except one looks like this, one is smaller, one has a vibrating controller, and etc.

The wii on the other hand is different, so that's why I'd choose the Wii, because none of my favorite games are confirmed to be on any console, so I just choose the console that is the cheapest and appears to be the most fun. Also I like all types of genres, so my favorite games are the one I listed above(the RPGs), I'm fine with everything else.

<b>To the point:</b> Are you a game person, or a console type of person<i>(console type of person means for their exclusive features, not game-exclusive, that's my definition)</i>. As you said you want to get gears of wars, how many games do you like to play on Xbox360, and <b>know</b> you will enjoy them, and same for Wii.

Whichever console you choose that has the most games, <b>you're guaranteed to enjoy and have fun with that console.</b> If you already know you'll be guaranteed to enjoy both consoles, then well do you have friends over to play with you, I see the wii as a more party type of console. After those questions are answered, and you're still undecided, I say just flip a coin and see who wins.

I say in the long run, get both. I love my 360 and Wii to death.

In the short run, you can't go wrong with either. The 360 has a great catalogue built up to the Wii's launch lineup, but then again I spend as much time playing Wii Sports as I do playing my entire collection of 360 games (which numbers 24, btw <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> ). Given that you're looking at around $200 in free money, I'd actually vote the Wii first- you can get the system + another game (ZELDA) for about 100 of your own money.

But yeah. I'm a damn happy owner of both, and for the price of a PS3 these two will give you a hell of a lot more.

Actually, if you haven't gotten a DS lite yet, skip 360 and Wii.

Right now, Nintendo DS is far superior to both.

If I was forced to choose I would get a Wii over a 360. The only things a 360 has that your PC won't get are Dead Rising, Gears of War, and stuff like Madden. Everything else is available on the PC or has a counterpart that's much better. The Wii, though, is crazy unique and has stuff like Rayman and Wii Sports and Zelda that you're not going to see on a computer since us PC guys are sans Wii controller. Factor in the smaller price, the upcoming trio of Mario, Super Smash Bros, and Metroid, and the 360's "u pay ze moneh" multiplayer, Nintendo's where it's at.

IMHO though, just wait a few months and buy a DirectX10 3d card. HD graphics my butt; show me anything that looks nearly as good as Crysis for a console and I'll show you an elaborately designed contraption to make a PC look like a console.
