http://www.wesnoth.org/
The Battle for Wesnoth is a turn-based SRPG-type game. It is an open-source project that seems to be trying to take the best of the genre and putting it into one game. Although the single player can be prohibitively difficult, playing with friends in the mutliplayer can be a fun/entertaining experience. A new version was released right around Christmas, so I figured now would be a fine time to introduce the community to it. Give'r a look!

[edit]This game is more in the vein of Fire Emblem or Shining Force, and less like the newcomers to the genre (the PS2 games that have been coming out for the last few years)[/edit]

    Question of upmost importance:

HOW WELL DOES IT COMPARE TO DISGAEA!?

    Trying it out.

Question: Is there a way I could maybe say install it to a flash drive or something and carry it around?

Heh, I checked this out months ago, I really enjoyed it but my attention turned to other things... but that's just me. It's a good and interesting game, I just wish the units had more levels they could gain, three just aint enough to fuel my rpg needs <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

Ok I tried it. Its uh... ok. Not involved enough, though. Was hoping for it to be similar to Heroes of Might & Magic (3 in particular)

I don't care about Heroes of Might and Magic. What I care about is this,

...and how well "The Battle for Wesnoth" stands up against it.

I'm a picky guy, but when you've played SRPG's that good, you have to be.

You do realize they are in almost completely different categories right? Comparing them would be like comparing WoW and Street Fighter.

I think what Otto is trying to point out is that WoW and Street Fighter could both be called "Button Mashers" if you really wanted to. That doesn't accurate describe either, however.

Disga.. Disgaea is an S-RPG in the sense that all combat is done on a grid, with leveling playing a major role (and leet tile swapping, or something.) BfW is an S-RPG in the sense that it's a strategy game (like BattleMech, Shining Force, Advance Wars) with mild RPG influences. It's more strategy than RPG, whereas Disgae.. Disgaea is more RPG than strategy. I think that's as best as I can describe it. Wesnoth also shines most when you're playing against other people.
