    Are we allowed to use existing (unfinished) maps? Or must we start from scratch?
    <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    Sure. Whatever you have is fine. You have until the end of January.

    Also, custom content is allowed (models, textures, sounds, etc)?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    As long as you stay within the guidelines, you're allowed.

    so we really have to start with MS huh

    for the plans ive drawn up for my next map, i actually wanted to start with the middle hive... usually when im building a map, i figure out what the most critical room is amidst the entire layout, start there, and then build out. Otherwise i'm too terrified of being way too short for certain bridges.

    Okay so, I've started from scratch, but the map is already taking shape so thought I'd be the first to post some screenies. Haven't fixed much of a rad file yet so I guess it's a bit dark, but I like it that way(eventhough it's the marine spawn). The R_speeds is prolly a bit high for the players in certain spots, like when you stand in one of the ends of the hall and look against the other, tried to compensate for it by placing a wall right by the CC to block the sight, but no, still not that good. It can get up to 700, but usually around 400-500. for the commander it's about 250, can get up to about 400.

    Here it goes:
    <img src="http://home.no.net/chefkim/beta60017.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />
    <img src="http://home.no.net/chefkim/beta60020.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />
    <img src="http://home.no.net/chefkim/beta60018.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />
    <img src="http://home.no.net/chefkim/beta60025.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />
    <img src="http://home.no.net/chefkim/beta60021.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

    I like the style and colour scheme. I even like the lighting, but surely that sort of lighting scheme is better used elsewhere in the map. The MS should be easily defendable for the Marine team, so anything that hinders accuracy or the ability to spot cloakers, etc. is bad. Also you have a whole shaft above that RT where skulks can hide to recover some HP (if they have regen), the light halfway up the wall also serves as a lerk perch meaning they can spore the MS without having to worry about flapping their wings (not to mention it helping them build up speed for dive-bombing).

    Looks-wise it's good, but design-wise it could do with another pass. Maybe you could salvage the RT shaft (which I agree is cool) and put it in a Hive room instead?

    Thx for the comment, kinda had some of the same thoughts myself. So I'll see if I can mix something new up from scratch and use this another time <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />

    Happy Holidays!

    I've been toying with the idea to add another option to the prize area instead of a monetary/constie account:

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->OR

    One free full-paid copy of 'Zen of Sudoku' *

    AND

    Choice of 1 Steam 'powered' game of $9.95 *
    Choices are: <u>The Ship: Single Player</u>, <u>Opposing Force</u>, <u>Team Fortress Classic</u>, <u>Space Empires IV</u>, <u>Richochet</u>, <u>Counter-Strike</u>, <u>Counter-Strike:Condition Zero</u>, <u>Bloodrayne</u>, <u>Uplink</u>, <u>HL2:Deathmatch</u>, <u>Day Of Defeat</u>, <u>Gary's Mod</u>, <u>Ghost Master</u>, <u>Full Pipe</u>, <u>X2: The Threat</u>, <u>Eets</u>, <u>Earth 2160</u>, <u>Half-Life: Source</u>(include HL:S DM), <u>Half Life: Blue Shift</u>, <u>DeathMatch Classic</u>.

    *NOTE* Games to be added to your steam account, not an actual box copy.

    Mmm... I have a MS in the works still... but I dunno. I'm trying to make it seem like a hanger storage area... I need a good effect for a force field but I'm horrible at making my own <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

    BTW- ShenTrax- you spelled GarRy's Mod wrong (You omitted an R)

    I think it's taken me longer to get hammer all correctly reinstalled than it will do to complete a map for this competition.

    Mapping time!

    Not intending to rag on the current judges, who are very talented mappers for the most part, but I'd really like to see some judges who are qualified to analyze and judge game play viability as well. Someone like NS playtesters or high ranked competitive players...

    I've been mapping in source for a while, but i started with HL mapping by Hammer 3.4, and its quite different. If I could now when the NS2TR going to be relased, it'd meka the diecision easier. Cuz it's pretty hard to change between the two different engines. What is only a few click in SDK, that make takes hours, or maybe days, to find out, how to do it in HL1. By the way, This contest is a great idea, i gope it'll be succesful, but I really donno, what'll happen, if NS2TR'll be relased while It's in progress. I wish the best, but also, I thirst for NS2TR:P.

    Still taking judge submissions. I'd welcome any of them, if they would show interest in being a judge.

    I think it means a bit more if someone is requested to be a judge because they're a respected member in the community instead of people signing up to be judges so maybe you should consider messaging someone like KungFuSquirrel or KenBanks and see if they would judge instead of expecting people to sign up.

    Agreed, and at very least it's possible that they aren't signing up simply because they don't regularly browse the mapping forum and don't know about the competition. It can't hurt raising awareness.

    I've sent a few PMs. Although I would like to have a panel of 3-5 judges to keep things less complicated.

    On a side note; I wouldn't presume to know who is still active or inactive, but I can hope that I may recieve a response.

    Blue strip lighting! Nice. That nos-vertpanel texture on the arches is praying for something to break it up. Grills? support-struts? your call.

    I love the size of the room and the detail on the floor. Try compiling that with -gamma 0.7 (rad) and chuck some blueish spot lights around at about 210 210 255 220 brightness wideness 20 22 degrees.

    I may have screens but I'll still unimpressed with the lighting in my map. It's being difficult.

    Excellent, looks like things are comming along good!

    I've update the first post, adjust the 'Prizes'.

    Created a <a href="http://www.shentrax.net/nscontest" target="_blank">2007 Mapping Contest Blog</a>, which has everything laid out and easy to find.

    Mirrored your screens, Blood, Thanks for the eye-candy.

    I've had loads of issues over christmas and now my hard drive has blown up (using internet at work).

    Before you all start shouting you should have backed up....

    I did back-up, I just don't currently have a spare hard drive to put my back-up back onto....

    May not have enough time to get my MS done now, as I was having serious issues with it anyway..

    if still not then blame me for making it too dark!

    I'm no good at posting screenshots (can't make em look half decent and the gamma screws with em) so here's what I have so far.

    I feel like pulling out atm XD I have no chance in hell.

    WADS YOU WILL NEED

    c:\program files\valve\steam\steamapps\chip_trekie@msn.com\half-life\ns\lights.wad
    c:\program files\valve\steam\steamapps\chip_trekie@msn.com\half-life\ns\ns2.wad
    c:\program files\valve\steam\steamapps\chip_trekie@msn.com\half-life\ns\ns.wad
    c:\ztools\zhlt.wad
    c:\program files\valve\steam\steamapps\chip_trekie@msn.com\half-life\ns\ns_bast.wad
    c:\program files\valve\steam\steamapps\chip_trekie@msn.com\half-life\ns\ns_nancy.wad
    c:\program files\valve\steam\steamapps\chip_trekie@msn.com\half-life\ns\ns_neptic.wad

    I hope someone can point me to who made neptic.wad- it's an awsome set of textures. Love the bluewall theme <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

    <a href="http://www.filecrunch.com/file/~vtdgu1" target="_blank">My Maps .bsp</a>

    Take a run around the MS.

    WHAT IT IS:

    I'm theming my MS as being a maintenence bay- should be obvious by the LARGE hanger doors and the flourescent lighting. I need a ship or vehicle of some sort to put in there- i'm trying to make one myself in hammer, but it's not working too well. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" /> Obviously it's not finished, and if anyone can give me a small reference on how to make good screenshots, I'll do it that way from now on.

    Thanks

    -Kitt

    PS- blood, where did you get the monitor and lights? I'd love to do a red theme instead of a blue one, but I can't finda ny good looking red lights <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" /> They're all... too red if that makes any sense.
  • SteveRSteveR Join Date: 2006-12-25 Member: 59239Members, Constellation
    ns_neptic.wad's not on my computer. I recommend taking shots even if the gamma's off. Heck I'll change the gamma and send them back via email if you want.

    You know you may have to compile a WAD file with just the extra used textures... and create a 'Kitt.wad' file.
    lights.wad, zhlt.wad, ns_neptic.wad may not be readily available on everyones computer.

    Or when you submit your map we'll need:
    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->[ 6 ] Complete list of used Textures (I know ya hate it) or WAD file of ALL used textures.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    Either a complete list of textures from which wad file; or a WAD of all used textures.
    This <u>excludes</u> Textures from existing WADs; e.g.: ns.wad, ns2.wad, halflife.wad, etc. Which should be easy to gather(from the RMF), but would be nice if you had a list.....

    Done and done <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

    USED WADS:
    Kitt.wad (included)
    ns.wad
    ns2.wad
    zhlt.wad (you should have it- they're invisible textures anyway)

    <a href="http://www.filecrunch.com/file/~56gfjj" target="_blank">ns_readyroom beta 4</a>

    <a href="http://www.filecrunch.com/file/~56gfjj" target="_blank">Kitt.wad</a>

    You know what to do.

    I have the basic architecture done, now for the details. I'm hoping someone can design a nuclear powered wessel <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" /> to fill that space in front over the grate- hopefully the right size to fit thru the large two doors in the front. I gave up making one in hammer- no... it won't work... it sucks every time I try XD

    As in my previouse post- tis a hanger bay. It's BIG. I'm working on the trolly atm, but my STEAM account is fuxored- I can't log in <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" /> so I can't check how it looks. This is the latest build- even I haven't seen it <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

    I would like everyone to welcome Merkaba to the judging panel!

    Thanks for the update on everyones progress. I havent had time to eyeball Kitt's BSPs thats posted, but if someone could grab a screen or two for everyone to see, that would be great. Or if they need to be brightened, forward them over.

    I've updated the Judge List within the first post, and the <a href="http://www.shentrax.net/nscontest" target="_blank">NS Mapping Contest Blog</a>.
