<div class="IPBDescription">Buggerit, millenium hand and shrimp!</div>Did anyone see this on Sky One tonight? Part 1 was on 8pm to 10pm, I think part 2 is the same time tomorrow (monday).

To my knowledge it is the first live action rendition of a Discworld novel, and I thought it was very good! The comedy was so lovely and in tune with the style of the shooting, it was often like watching a pantomime.

I'm looking forward to tomorrow night <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Still doesn't quite compare to the book, and I doubt any adaption of Terry's will ever do, but it was good <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

I personally thought it was fantastic. I am so happy that they have portrayed the charachter Death EXACTLY how I imagined him to be. I think they have made a rediculously good job on this considering the kind of creativity and expectation they had to live up to.

    P.S.

Have a poke around at these links and the associated ones. There's a fairly long interview with Terry.

Ach, if this is anywhere near as good as the book, I am despondent as to having missed it. Come on, give it to the Yanks!

I saw it, and while I hate to say it, I was a little dissapointed. Not because it wasn't faithful to the books, because it was, and not because they missed bits out from the book, because they didn't really miss anything important. It just seemed a little.... slow. There were funny bits undoubtedly, but it just didn't seem to have that special Pratchetty something which attracted me to the books in the first place. And the more I thought about it the more I came to realise what the "something" was; the narration. A lot of teh funny in Terry Pratchett's books comes not from what's going on in the story, but by the way its told. The little things which you wouldn't know just from watching the events unfold, like that Nobby Nobbs has to carry a certificate to prove he's human, or some of bloody stupid Johnson's <i>other</i> inventions. Like the 150 yard long, 1 inch wide trout lake, the sundial which explodes around noon, or of course the post sorting engine built with a Pi of exactly 3. For convenience.

They also made very little effort to explain things to people unfamiliar with the books, like why the monster under the bed was afraid of the blanket, or why the tooth fairy's minions fell out of the sky when they were killed. My parents were watching with a sort of "WTH" look on their faces most of the way through.

As I said though, it IS faithful to the books, and for that I commend the producers. I'll definately be watching part 2 tonight, because knowing what's still to come, there's plenty of oppotunity for it to pick up a bit.

Havent seen this one but ive seen live music and some other one, they seem to be similiar, not bad but alot better as books.
Cant really say why but its more fun in my imagination when i read the books <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

I saw this on IMDB, I was guessing it probably wasn't going to be good. But worth a shot, still. I like the Discworld books, but I still haven't read much of them (just the Rincewind ones, a couple Watchmen ones, and Going Postal). I would like to read the Wee Free Men, though...

Hmmm I'll look this up. Hopefully it'll be decent. I would like to see a great Discworld movie.

EDIT: interesting, that trailer sounds like it was narrated by Tony Jay (who I call "The narrator")... but he's dead. huh.

EDIT 2: Also worth noting that David Warner is in it. He's the last guy you see in the second video up there (the guy holding the picture of Hogfather).

How did they do the part that took place in the child's drawing? The gap between sky and land? I was reading that and it made my eyes water.

It was just white, like if it was actually a child's painting.

I've just finished watching it (thank jebus for sky+ and multistart...), and honestly.... I wasn't disapointed. It could have been better, but it could have been much <i>much</i> worse, and for that at least i'm thankful.

Nil IQ, I was talking about this with my brother earlier, and we came to the same conclusions as you. However, we did come on the idea, that any of the Vimes books might work, as the humour is more physical, more dialogue based, mainly Vimes and his cynicism/sarcasm. You agree?

After reading basically all of Discworld, I went through and read it again (about a year or two later of course) and I kind of kept "movie" in the back of my mind. My conclusion was that they would probably work pretty well, especially the Granny Weatherwax ones. The Watch books have lots of cynicism and stuff like that with Vimes, but they also have about as much of the footnote/narrative comedy as any of the others.

I have yet to see it but I can see where you're coming from Nil_IQ. A lot of Pratchett's charm is in the narrative. I hope the next Pratchett movie (c'mon...) has got a narrative voiceover.

Terry Pratchet not only put his name to it he had a hand in writing the screen play AND personally appeared in it which says ALOT about how he felt about this interpritation. He has continually put down and not agreed to movie script pitches concerning his books over the past 20 years. This is predominantly because directors and production teams simply don't fully understand his perspective and style. One way of looking at it is this is only the first step.

It could have be absolutley awful and at the end of the day it wasn't. It was actually quite good.

Oh and I loved Terrys cameo at the end as the shop keeper. Nice touch.
