That said, Bioshock's very near the top of reasons why I want a new rig.
- Take control of your world by hacking mechanical devices, commandeering security turrets and crafting unique items critical to your very survival.
- Upgrade your weapons with ionic gels, explosives and toxins to customize them to the enemy and environment.
- Genetically modify your body through dozens of Plasmid Stations scattered throughout the city, empowering you with fantastic and often grotesque abilities.
- Explore a living world powered by Ecological A.I., where the inhabitants have interesting and consequential relationships with one another that impact your gameplay experience.
- Experience truly next generation graphics that vividly illustrate the forlorn art deco city, highlighted by the most detailed and realistic water effects ever developed in a video game.
- Make meaningful choices and mature decisions, ultimately culminating in the grand question: do you exploit the innocent survivors of Rapture...or save them?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I can't imagine what possesed you to stick that in this thread instead of a PM...
I'm worried that BioShock is going to be too scary for me or something. I really don't handle scary games very well, and if you can't go 10 minutes without a wall-crawling crazy lady with knives for hands springing from the shadows screaming as she attempts to burrow a hole into your face, well, I dunno how much fun it would be for me. I'm just too much of a wimp to take that.

I managed to play through ravenholm in HL2 in numerous five-minute segments. However, my heart still races and my gut churns every time a ghost comes after me in pacman. Normal pacman.

I'm the opposite. System Shock 2 didn't scare me, FEAR was just a joke, DOOM 3 was boring and Silent Hill 2 only just made me feel a little uneasy.
I seem to be invincible to scary video games. Its very upsetting <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />
FEAR, however, i had to split into separate sessions. the combat was what kept me hooked to the game, and the scare tactics they employed constantly forced me away from it. like turning around to climb down a ladder and seeing ZOMBIE FEET AT EYE LEVEL? ridiculous. i stuck to multiplayer for about a week after that part.
HL2 is just about perfect. makes me nervous but doesn't make me want to kill myself to stop the voices. Ep1 was great in that respect... the pitch black scene? very well done.
alyz: "We've gotta get Dr. Kleiner to use a better battery." Or something like that when the light went out.

I honestly think for as much as FEAR was supposed to be the scary one, Monolith really nailed it with Condemned instead. Oh, and you get to bash hobos.
They've definitely nailed the world in Bioshock, now I'm eager to see what all's living inside <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Not even a flinch in Doom 3? I highly doubt it

Go out and buy Theif: Deadly Shadows. Play through until you get to The Cradle.
Its a level that takes place in the Shalebridge Cradel, a building that has served as both an orphanage and an insane asylum throughout its existance.
Looking glass (makers of bioshock systemshock2 and theif) know how to tell a story and know how to make you crap your pants.

litterally?
I must admit that my expectations for this game have gone through the roof.
edit: hmmm double posted within the same post, that's a new one...
Bioshock really grabbed my interest on the very first day. It looks like this game has it all: original enemies, interesting storyline, great graphics, amazing mapping and unique gameplay.

QFT - although the gameplay isn't all that unique if it's been found in the System Shock series <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />
To be honest I was first skeptical that the setting was to be in this pseudo 1940's-1950's since I'm really not a fan of this time period at all, but the sheer coolness of this game has turned me around <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

I suppose if you find the characters from He-man scary I suppose Doom 3 might be construed as frightening. I do wish I had the Mac-hall image that sums up Doom 3 very nicely, with the zombies popping up out of every random corner just 5 feet before picking up a weapon/ammunition. That this poor tactic to be scary failed the first time wasn't really a problem, that is was the entire gimmick for how ID tried to make the game scary the whole way ended up being a big detriment to the game.

You are aware that Bioshock is, in every sense of the word, System Shock 3? Although Irrational (who are making this game and did in fact make System Shock 2) do not have the ability to make a genuine sequel to SS2, Bioshock is arguably the next best thing and probably even for the best in many respects.
They can't rip off what are ultimately their own ideas <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
I have no idea as to how this game will be once release o.o"
I do like the idea of not being all uber and powerfull, you're just a guy trying to survive... I hope this doesn't stop troughout the game with new and better weapons. Like doom3 for example, where once you get the shotty it's all over...
...

Nice trailer. It's neat that the scene with the lighthouse is apparently rendered in real time. Looking very nice.
