Warcraft III/Starcraft Thread
<div class="IPBDescription">Who here plays regularly?</div>I'm struggling to find online people, or make online friends through Warcraft III. When there is a mutual friend list, the friend usually rarely comes on.
Anyway, who plays those two games regularly and wants to play sometimes?

I like the concept of strategy games, but no matter how much I play them (Dawn of War specifically) I'm never any good at 'em. Starcraft is just an out-swarm your opponent sort of game, and it doesn't appeal to me, despite how cool Starcraft actually is.
So to sum up:
I'm sad that I suck at strategy games *tear*
Account name: Caliburnus
Although my copy of WC3 has gone missing <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />
I don't know when you last played SC but I could swear that the vast majority of Bnet players have gotten a lot better since I regularly played about 5-6 years ago. Now it no longer seems as much of a swarming unless you let them (or they let you) get that far into the game on purpose. Seems everytime I play someone dies after one or two attacks/counter-attacks.
Anyways, I play SC on USWest as Soviet_Garal
The game where you are in the lobby and some 10 year old whispers the word "homo" to you 15 times?
The game where you either rush or get rushed?
The game that doesn't allow for any kind of strategic play (like most RTS) just massive army building and rushing?
No. That game got dumped in the trash 3 years ago. What a waste of my time.
You mean the game where players say "OMG n00b!" If you ask a question, and then boot you from the server without answering it?

Man your trash can by now has just about every Real Time Strategy games, most of the good RPG games, and who knows what else. You need another hobby.
Oh yeah and if you are gunna whine about massing, then don't give your opponent that much time. I perfected the lurker rush/drop. Nobody ever sees it coming.
As for WC3, I'm usually hardcore on it, or I take long breaks. Right now, I'm on my break. I started with elf, then undead and now human. I play melee because I consider it not as micro-intensive as SC and I happen to do well. I get the Mountain King and stormbolt to rock their heroes. I start with foots, but from there, I switch to rifles, breakers, gryphons or knights.
I'm on west, if you want to play. I bet by now, my clan would have kicked me for inactiveness...

That is true actually. It took me years to realize that I can't properly handle RTS games

You should watch some of the more 'competitive' games.
<a href="http://sc.gosugamers.net/replays.php" target="_blank">Click for replays</a>.
<a href="http://sc.gosugamers.net/replays.php?id=7313" target="_blank">This is a decent Zerg versus Protoss game</a>.
To watch replays, first you need to put them in your starcraft/maps/replays folders, then click single player then click load replay in the Campaign selector screen.
Though, one thing I don't like is 1v1 Zerg vs Protoss.
Protoss always gets the upperhand, unless it's a really big map.
The reason why it has to be a big map, if Protoss player knows where the Zerg player is near the beginning of the game, the Protoss player can easily mass zealots using two gateways and own the Zerg.
The Zerg is limited to three larva per hatchery, the zerg has to build drones and zerglings from those three.
Not only that, the Zerg's drones also are 'sacrificed' when you build.
The Protoss only needs one probe to build two gateways, and defenses, while the player can keep building probes and probably up to 12 probes mining at once AND a large amount of zealots spawning.
The Zerg is limited to like 5-6 drones mining, if the player wants to try to fend against the Protoss by building zerlings ASAP. So the Zerg player has to sacrifice some of his/her economy to stand a chance against an early zealot rush.
It takes 4 zerglings to defeat one Zealot btw. So you'll definitely need at least two hatcheries within 5-6 minutes of the game to build enough zerglings and stand against the zealots. You'll also need a spawning pool the second you build your 2nd or 3rd drone.
On WC3, team vs team games are horribly unbalanced. Mainly because you might end up with players who are horrible, players who are AFK(I've run into this many times), players who lag and drop out, and also players who back stab or team kill you.
Team games are based mostly on luck, and little on skill. No one can fight off 4 players alone, unless the 4 players are really, really horrible.
Only 1v1 games really matter in WC3 matters.
Anyway, my account for both WC3 and SC is "Petco_smells", because Petco was apparently already used... Yeah, that is a horrible name, should have used "Petco_Pets" but I already have an icon for WC3 for Petco_Smells and I don't feel like winning 25 games again for an icon.
Nigh on every RPG is hard if you just rush into things.
Take Tales of Eternia. The first time round, I half-rushed it, at about level 40, and got stomped by Hyades at the site of the Craymel Cannon...
Second time around, the entire party was more like level 65 by the time I had to fight Hyades. Needless to say, I stomped him this time around.
Hell, even at level 75 (which was what I had gotten to by the end of the game), it STILL took me nearly 40 minutes to kill Nereid. 300,000hp boss, resistant to all magics, except Light and Shadow, uninterruptable spells, casts 4 spells at the same time, unhittable during spells, immune to all status effects, and VERY heavy physical resistance. Reid was doing about 30 damage a hit, most spells doing little more than that. I dread to think what would have happened if I'd taken her on any lower than 75...
Oh, and some bosses will still stomp you, without some luck... <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_bestiary_%28A-E%29#Demon_Wall" target="_blank">Know what I mean?</a>
Bah, go play Springs it beats the hell out of starwarcraft! ^^ I have my copy of SC somewhere never played it over internet though.... and I still dont own WC3
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
There almost a copyright infringement there with that starwarcraft <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
I suck at RTS so much. If I went comm in NS I'd end up researching the Clorfs for the Lorks...
The problem with RTS on LAN is that once you're cooked the game proceeds to go on for another few hours or so if the superspawners have a lot of spawned shizzle... Heh I do play CoH and love it when playing with a buddy against normal AI, but suck at it so much I'm afraid of playing it against players and loled at <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />
The whole "rush or be rushed" thing used to bother me, as did the "intense micromanagement" thing (since when do generals give explicit orders to <i>every single soldier, individually?</i>), but I've gotten over that.
I think I'm registered on Azeroth at the moment, as SoulSkorpion. I haven't gone online yet - I'm going to learn to pwn the computer a few times first.

<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Just to nit-pick. It takes 3 zerglings to kill one zealot. One ling will survive with about 75% health.
I <i>used</i> to play Starcraft, and I think I played Warcraft 3 a handful of times before I got frustrated with getting my rear-end handed to me in multiplayer. (stupid swear filter)

Part of your problem is the fact you think it is 'out-swarming' your opponent, when a lot of starcraft is decided heavily by micro, your choices of what to do in the first 5 minutes of the game and scouting. Good competitive games of starcraft can swing heavily and are decided entirely by who micromanages their forces better than their opponent.
Also: To all of you complaining about rushes: It's not like they are hard to stop... Instead of teching up in the first 5 minutes or so, just concentrate on getting 1 or 2 defensive structures. 1-2 bunkers full of marines can stop alot of guys. And many times, people who rush do so because they aren't that good at the game, so you are in luck if they cripple themselves by pouring to many resources into their rush.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I agree, it's actually pretty easy to prevent rushes simply by build many units/defense structures and just leaving them at base to <i>defend</i>, not attack.
Whoever plays WC3/SC regularly should hang around in #naturalselection mIRC channel, I usually ask people if they have either games and wants to play.
Add Petco_smells on US west for both sides if you want to play, if you want to play on another server go on IRC and I'll create an account on the other server and play.
For WC3, pretty much anything except "life of a <x>" and tag games. Tag games <b>I hate</b>, mainly because someone has to be the tagger, which isn't fun at times and frustrating most of the time. Why couldn't they just spend a few minutes setting triggers so the computer is the tagger.
For SC, it's as easy as making a trigger for the computer called "Send all units to random suicide missions", for WC3, it's a little bit longer.
I like DotA, mainly because we have to play it, it rules 70% of the custom map games at most times. Does anyone play it? I'm trying to join a somewhat decent clan, I joined one before but they RARELY played or rarely were on. I've played every single hero except the new ones that came out in the last two or three versions, since I haven't played DotA since 3-4 months.
The main reason why I haven't played for a while is the follow:
1. Everyone is playing easy mode, it changes the gameplay to make it easier obviously. Now, I'm a little picky and actually prefer to play normal mode, but only one out of every ten games hosts it. And I can't really host games, and even if I can host games, I want to be on scourge, not sentinels.
2. Leavers, people who lag out, backstabbers/feeders, etc - enough said...
3. Online play, battle.net, specifically these creatures called humans that plague battle.net with the "OMG noobs, you lucky we're not play counter-strike, because I'd own you".
Anyway, how about the storyline of the games, did you people like it?
Well I happen to be making a Warcraft III map atm. A lot of work needs to be done before it is fully playable. A preview can be made here <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?s=2940658823481607680&showtopic=99320" target="_blank">Battle Arena Zero - Warcraft III Map Release</a>
Warcraft 3: Utter junk altogether. While Warcraft 2 has kept me interested for several years, Warcraft 3 kept me interested for less than 48 hours. I suppose the only thing that saves it is it's excellent map editor and custom maps. But that's it.
Sometimes I don't like playing WC3 because of the cookiecuts. UD always uses DK spiders statues. Human abuses mage and casters. Orc has that stupidly annoying blademaster who chomps your workers (fix it already blizzard). And elves have their demon hunter, hunts, dryads and bears.
But then again, cookie cuts allow me to focus on builds that work against them. The problem is that sometimes even with the proper build AGAINST a cookie, the cookie player has better micro and finishes me off. Dang reflexes.
As for a story, well this is what I do on a certain map in melee mode of WC3.
You know wetlands, the small 2v2 map?
Well, you get the goblin tinker from the middle of the map. From there, you creep the orange hydra creeps and you'll instantly get to level 2. From there, you can easily take on the red creeps with your tinker SOLO. And when your tinkers at level 4, start some fights until he's level 6. Then you simply robo-golbin him (lets him do 3.5 damage to buildings) and wack at their townhalls. Oh and pack a wand of teleportation to get out. Fun.
I play team games because... it's a team effort I guess. I just find it more fun.
I go mountain king because I don't like cookie cut mages. Storm bolt friggin owns. Against undead, you HAVE to go breakers. Number one, they can't be nuked. Number two, they move fast. Number 3, feedback owns their heroes and statues. Against orc, you HAVE to go gryphons. Get a few of them and raid their burrows. Good stuff. Against elf... definitely get rifles and maybe gryphons if they go bears.
I commonly use:
- breakers
- gryphons
- knights
- rifles
That's about it.
I dunno if I'll play more since I'm tired of starting from ###### every game and how you have to dedicate at least 30 minutes, instead of HL games where you can pop in and out at ease.
