Defragmented

My hard drive has been in the process of becoming defragmented for the past 4 hours, and no end is in sight. I must make a lot more effort to defrag at least once a month, instead of once a year <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

How often do you defrag? And anybody have anything related to the topic of defragging to say?

I take it you are using the windows built in defragmenter. You should use <a href="http://www.diskeeper.com/defrag.asp" target="_blank">Diskeeper</a>, it runs so much better and is much more effective at defragmenting. There are trial versions available on the website for the several different versions of it, I recommend that you take a look.

My computer tends to start doing foolish things if I don't defragment more then one time a month or so.

I usually defrag it lots then run out of space and don't bother clearing out enough stuff to defrag again for aaages.

I defragmented my PC again for the first time in a year or something just at the start of this month and it took 2 days... it was only a 60gb partition it was working on too :s

Oh and I go with the disk-keeper recommendation as well. I don't know if it really is better but it has all these cool statistics and graphs and important looking stuff so it feels like it is, that's for sure :3

As do I. It depends on how much you use it, how many programs you install, etc.

    Hey - it's free, just do it (and it harms nothing)! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />

Unless you use O&O Defrag's boot-up defrag feature. I had a disk error or something once and could never get the freaking program to stop running and rebooting. Had to format and start over.

I recommend to split your disk into several smaller drives, like 30 gb for games, 6 gb for windows, etc...
This way you can defrag whatever needs to be defraged and it will only take a few minutes.

Every six months here. And completion time tends to be solely based on how much space I have left on the drive; a 20GB partition with 500MB free takes forever, while a 250GB partition with 100GB free finishes in about five minutes.

Tried an alternate defragger (trying to remember the name) and it ended up almost skrodding my system, and took longer than the built-in defrag. At this point I just use the built-in and run it two or three times to get as tight a pack as possible.

    Diskeeper...

Buying the full version I think will give you the optimized version which defrags really fast.

    Really great defrag program otherwise.

Defragging is for girls. Real men let their hard drives chug.

My record is around 18 months without a defrag; I'm on 5 atm- aiming to beat 18.

I usually defragment once a month or so, and use perfectdisk. I haven't heard of diskkeeper and since I have no net at home I can't try it just yet, but perhaps someday.
