Problems With Marines Not Following Orders

I'm trying to be a good commander, but what do I do when marines do not follow orders? Today we had 1 hive secured, and I was trying to group 5 armoured and heavily armed marines to the south of a 2nd hive. The opposition was poor, but the marines:

> would not wait for others to arrive
> would not follow the waypoints to the grouping point
> would not get armour and hmg even if I told them to

What do I do in this situation? It's frustrating, because we began to lose our forward bases, mayhem ensued, at which point I left the game (after telling marines/aliens exactly why).

We could easily have won, all we needed to do was take that 2nd hive. It's just that there were too many Rambos around.

HELP! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

I got threatened with a ban tonight because as a joke I said "Aliens, press ALT-F4 for secret abilities".

    The admin didn't have "Sense Of Humour 1.1" installed, apparently. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Oh there is an easy fix. Take your keyboard, throw it at your monitor and yell out "FOLLOW ORDERS."

Pull the plug from your computer and go and eat some ice cream to make you feel better.

Then go out and get a new keyboard, and try a different server.

Laughs...Jon I like your idea. Might be the only thing to work. I was playing in Coronos in space the other night. Our first commander seemed to be very new and I got in right before it got over. Next round I jumped in and led the team to victory...I would like to thank Roy, Rich and B for thier excellent skills in that one. Next round, I try to command only to half most of the team cluelessly sitting around the spawn not following orders or helping thier team. So I ended up with only one or two guys, namly Rich and one other, the other good ones had left or switched teams...they were trying to help but were usually by themselves being outnumbered.

about 15 minutes into It i told the team "if it continues like this...and you guys don't start working together...this will be unnwinnable in about 5 minuntes." well sure enough we lost all our nodes and all bases and the aliens had three hives...I was able to hold the spawn for awhile but it was a lost cause. The good marines who had switched started asking if I missed them and I said, yup, a commander is only as good as the marines under him.

If they don't follow orders build on their heads so they get stuck.

If they still don't follow orders don't give them weapons and build on their heads again <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Well not giving them guns is one thing, but it hardly helps to achieve objectives. It would be really nice if marines could be given more urgent reminders of their waypoints. Such a thing would be open to abuse, so I'm not sure how that might work.

On most of the servers I play on (UK based), the aliens win 9 out of 10 times. Why do marines insist on going solo? Anybody knows that a skulk vs unarmoured marine is no match. I just can't understand the mentality. It's also disappointing for the good marines, who obediantly wait for my orders, while getting no support from the rest of the team (who also have the same orders).

That can be a problem, have you tried explaining to them that if they don't work with you, they may as well be working against you?

You have the overview, they are your troops, you are all fighting for the "greater good" of the marines and obviously, if there's no co-operation there is no winning.

It all depends how you wanna approach this, you could try what's been previously mentioned, i.e. not giving your marines weapons. I've found this gets an almost instant responce, "i need ammo, give me ammo now, i died it's your fault" and so on, then you can take a few seconds to say "when you follow orders, you get ammo, ok?"... not the nicest way to get things done, but they usually get the idea pretty soon.

The second way, is also not so nice, but you can always drop a gun and some armor outside the command centre, eject from the console, pickup your guns and blast some aliens. When the next map comes around, after the aliens have mopped the floor with the marines and the sook to you, just tell them there was no point you being commander as no one was listening, if they agree to listen you agree to be commander. If they don't listen and one of them tries at commander, he'll probably end up doing what you do if no one else follows orders.

    That's my 2 cents.

why can't everyone else do it :/

why is it so many marines that just do their own stuff.. don't they understand that if they go out by them self (offcourse you have to some times since maybe everyone else is allready there and you have died or somthing on the way there etc...) there is much bigger chanse that they die isntead of making it to the WP... grrr :/

There's something very important to keep in mind here: some of these maps are total mazes, and not everyone knows them. I played a game last night where I had some awesome marines, but I had to waypoint them by baby steps if I ever wanted them to get anywhere.

Me: Everyone to the refinery hive!
Team: Where? Give us a waypoint!
    Me: No problem, *blip*

I usually bribe marines that won't foillow orders, because they almost always want something i.e. jetpack, shotgun.. etc. I will say ok take this node at this waypoint and hold it without TF or reins for 2 mins and you will get what you want. Sometimes it actually works. Read my newbies guide to commanding for more ideas on how to handle your troops. In addition I would like to say that no situation (well almost no) is unwinnable I have personally come back with 3 hives lost and seen another commander do the same. But in that scenario you will need troops that actually listen/work to geather. Sometimes it takes a situation like that to get them all togeather.

Perhaps it's because I haven't really worked under a good commander. I'm not interested in HA or HMG tbh (I can see the resources along with everybody else) unless there's tons of cash there. I want waypoints, and objectives. If a commander tells me to guard a res node, then I will, and I won't move from that node for a good few minutes. Even then, I'll ask permission to move. Some people (scrub that, CHILDREN) find that boring, but the satisfaction gained from doing your job, however small, is enormous, when you get to take part in the splatterfest if the marines win.

Are there any UK based servers that tend to have good pings, and more importantly, good players? IPs below please. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

I should point out in response to my initial post, that there were 2 marines dutifully waiting at the grouping point, can't remember their names, but if they read this and recognise my name, I'll be a bit embarrassed. Its just the other 6-7 morons who I have a problem with.

    i'm doing the same thing...

but it's kinda enoying sometimes when you are sent to build something and guard it and then nothing happens.
after a while i offcourse ask for turret factory and some turrets so i don't have to stand there "afraid" <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> and kill alien after alien that is coming...

other annoying thing's is sometimes when this is happening and where there is comming lots of aliens (one at a time) and i kill them i'm asking for backup just in case and when the backup is coming they are walking away after a little while so i'm being left alone again..

    kinda annoying sometimes.

Yes, I've seen this. Two problems:

    1. Marines wandering off throughout the map while a captured hive is under attack, despite a commander's orders or teammates screaming for backup. 2 or 3 outgunned marines are at the hive, everyone else is just standing around or walking through cooridors.

    2. Marines wandering off throughout the map because a commander cannot keep them corraled. It's hard to do it. Voice-comm works better than waypoints, sometimes, because it can be hard to select all your teammates and then set a waypoint. Voice-comm is a GODSEND.. a shame mine doesn't work too great. All the games I've seen marines won have been with good communication from the commander and a few "lieutenant" players who help to keep the marines organized.

    Teams need to STICK TOGETHER.

/me has a stroke of genius

alright we know valve is coming up with a buddy system dealie soon, (its why you can rebind f1 anymore). so how bought they get a real ns ranking server up and it would store your win/loss record as a commander so when you join a game marines can queue it up quickly so they can see how good/bad you have been doing as a comm. so the marines would have some confidence in you as a leader it would be nice <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

Haha I like that "treat insubordinates as little children"
I will have to give that one a shot.

I ran into this problem tonight,
First off we were outnumbered 11-7 with one of our guys afk <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->
but still we were kicking some **obscenity** for quite a while, had the messhall motherinterface subspace hive and 2 other resources, plus almost all the upgrades except that last 60 rp gun upgrade.
We were winning , we had phase gates everywhere. I decided to push down from the hive and clear out the hallways where we were getting pounded on with 4-5 HA/HMG and one GL. Usually this is no problem but all of sudden most of my guys (5) were wiped out. On top of that I just didn't have the resources to resupply them all so I gave like one or two HA/HMG/Wielders ..
Now heres the problem, I had 3 to 4 guys, pretty much most of my team, hanging around the base asking for stuff even though we had no RP. I constantly told them move to your way point , we are losing this point move there now. All they had to do is jump thru the phase gate and go die or maybe at least kick some **obscenity** then die.. Just buy me a few mins to reequip the entire team then we go back and push again.. These morons refused to leave the base without weapons/armor so I dropped a few when I had the resources and of course they went off alone and died right away.

I finally stopped dropping stuff and told everyone that I wasn't dropping anything until I had enough for everyone, And of course in the 5 to ten minutes that the team just hanged out at base we lost hive/mess hall/ mother interface etc.. one by one they fell, and we had plenty of time and people almost to at least prolong the inevitable.. Instead I spent most of the RP trying to keep the one or two guys alive that were actually fighting.. Needless to say we lost...
There was nothing I could do short of jumping outta the CC into HA/HMG and fighting myself..

It really sucked but there was nothing to be done about it, outnumbered and half my team or more are idiots what do you do?
