Is it such a bad thing I can't remember?

Well, I changed since then. Here's how it went...

    - got a job (still working at that job today)
    - going to college
    - nearly got laid (emphasis on nearly. Don't ask how it went!)
    - actually working out (which I'm actually not at the moment)
    - got more mature
    - got mellower
    - got more bold and assertive
    - got more philosophical (I seriously need to not think too hard)

So yeah, I pretty much changed since then.

Great thread everyone. I love finding out what rich and interesting lives you guys lead! At least interesting.

I know I'm going to regret this, but what the hell. I too have a life outside of NS.

    - Dated quite a bit. Had a couple promising relationships that made me realize I need more emotional growth before they're going to go further. I've spent far too much time behind my computer and I have some personal catching up to do.
    - Started going to Al-Anon (for people affected by the alcoholism of others). It's helpful and I highly recommend you try it if you think you might benefit. It's been quite illuminating and has taught me that many behaviors that I've considered normal are highly screwed up.
    - Stopped going to bars. They always seem like they're going to be fun but I usually regret going.
    - Tried acupuncture. Not sure how I feel about it yet.
    - Been working out a lot. Finally got some muscle (for me at least) and slightly less programmery-looking.
    - Cooked tons, especially Japanese.
    - Played very few games, as I didn't have a decent computer to do so.
    - Thought a lot about whether I want kids or not.
    - Became a Mac fiend. It doesn't replace my PC, but I'm definitely recommending them to most non-gamers.
    - Did my damnedest to separate personal and work life, starting by trying to take the weekends off completely.
    - Started meditating again. It's helpful when I do it, but hard to force myself.
    - Decided to learn to sail, once I have the money.
    - Decided to work with Max! What a difference this makes to have someone to share the load.
    - Decided to make a casual game. Just about done with it.
    - Started doing some public speaking. It's a blast and I hope I get to do more.
    - Spent time deciding whether I want kids or not. It's such a big decision and I don't know how to make it.
    - Started talking to my brother more. Which are much more alike than I ever realized.
    - Made a list of people I want to focus my time on.
    - Spent far too much time trying to get this friggin' website done. More to the point, trying to convince others to work on the web site.
    - Went from being frustrated and exasperated about my business to being ecstatic again.

    -Charlie

Flayra, was it a conscious decision to start posting regularly on the forums again, as if you're gonna be always around? I like it, but I'm just wondering if its a part of that list.

Wow, that's fairly surprising. I think a lot of people here have thought of "The creator of NS" as a much more wooden person, a bringer of code and little else. Interesting stuff.

As for me? I've changed. A hell of a lot.

When I joined here, (Back right after release) I was still in high school. Totally immersed in the world of NS and half life. When the forums went down I was only finished my freshman year of college. Taking classes like kinetics and electromagnetism. Calc1 and calc2. Just looking forward into my college career. My Comptuer Science classes were basic programming.

Now i'm a Junior. A freaking Junior, spinning ever closer to the end of the semester. Everything is winding down. I'm not taking calculus and physics anymore, now it's Computer Vision techniques and microprocessor design. I don't do integrals or calculate trajectory apexes, I calculate branch predictions and superscalar queues. Harris corners and projective transformations. My brain is wired in ever-weirder ways as I drudge through increasingly esoteric information.

I've bought CDs. Fleshed out my Radiohead collection from sparse to bursting, rounded out the British Invasion with Kasabian and Muse.

I make jokes about recursion and binary trees (Do binary trees lose their leaves in the tree.winter()?)

I've also read. Tons. I've powered through the Hitchhiker's Guide series, dabbled in quite a few Asimov novels, gobbled up The Cryptonomicon (and am now leafing through Snow Crash.)

In appearance... I haven't changed much. But in mind, in experience, in outlook on life, in those aspects I've practically reinvented myself. What a difference a year can make.

I was awesome then, I'm awesome now. No change. Just awesome. And for every naysayer I have ten <strike>yesmen</strike> people who agree with me.

    <a href="http://www.theyesmen.org/" target="_blank">Those are hilarious by the way.</a>

    Gosh, what happened?

Alright, I'm a newbie here so I'll just give you a short summary over the past year:
<ol type='1'><li>I had a summerjob, made a lot of money</li><li>I bought myself a car and a brand new guitar.</li><li>I got my drivers licence.</li><li>I started working out, but only for a short while. I still have some muscle left.</li><li>I stopped playing NS. But now I'm back!</li><li>I fell in love, I really wish I didn't.</li><li>I survived the second year of high school or whatever you wanna call it.</li></ol>
Personally I haven't changed much. I'm still emotionally sad, and still searching for the love of my life.
I impressed myself when I got my drivers licence, and I still impress myself everytime I learn a new guitar solo.

-My lifelong struggle with sleep is over. Unfortunately it took academic probation to push me to go to a sleep clinic, and I was diagnosed with narcolepsy early this summer.
-I spent most of the summer sorting my thoughts out.
-Worked at Bestbuy. Provided you can ignore/tolerate drama, the computer department is a great place to get work experience.
-On the plus side, I'm back in college (courtesy of Medical Appeal, yahoo!), kicking ######. Well over 3.4 GPA right now. As it should be. The medicine I take for sleep is unique - it doesn't stim you up. It just prevents you from snapping into REM sleep at times you shouldn't (Provigil).
    - I've kept in touch with all my NS pals, but haven't been able to play lately.
    - I have three lady friends.
    - Mmm.

    I'm sad to hear about your diagnose. I hope you cope with it well <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Having that disorder must be absolute hell during school time. Do you really feel sleepy all day?
Insome cases however, I can see how it's beneficial. Like during long car travels as a passenger.

I was hesitant to contribute to the topic thinking "who cares about my life?" but then I realized it would be a useful exercise for myself.

    - Started jogging, lifting weights from time to time and playing soccer (football that is).
    - Became some kind of a <a href="http://www.ratebeer.com/ViewUser.asp?UserID=14765" target="_blank">beer critic</a>.
    - Played some WoW with NS peoples. Quit. Twice.
    - Cooked a lot. Particularly French cuisine and desserts.
    - Completely reconsidered the vision of my future after college. Decided to shift totally towards a more creative career in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Industrial_design" target="_blank">Industrial Design</a> rather than continuing in Ecology.
    - Started growing a funkee goatee partly as a result of the previous.
    - Traveled a little around Belgium was in Amsterdam, Aachen and in Egypt, while of course living in Paris and going to college in Colorado.
    - Watched practically the entire World Cup.
    - Got a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aygo" target="_blank">car</a>.
    - Started drinking tea. Particularly loose leaf black tea from <a href="http://www.adagio.com/" target="_blank">Adagio</a>.
    - Still haven't turned 21, but that hasn't stopped me (see #2).
    - Could have voted in two different countries (US and France) but didn't. Don't feel bad about it.
    - Changed my clothing to a more fashionable look.
    - Got paid for photography, photographed <a href="http://s.angoulvant.net/" target="_blank">on my own</a>, started painting and 3D modeling in Solidworks, while continuing to doodle and <a href="http://angoulvant.net/sblog/" target="_blank">design websites</a>.
    - Played some DoD:S, BF2142 and considered buying a Wii.
    - Tried to read more books, but failed. Tried to write more and <a href="http://angoulvant.net/sblog/" target="_blank">succeeded</a>.
    - Wrote a post for this topic.

Jees... all these lists make me feel like I've been so lazy :s

All I can think of is that I've got a job as a games tester on an upcoming Xbox 360 title (and as luck would have it I joined the team after the credits had been sent off to be cast so my name won't be in the title roll -.-).
On the bright side the game is fun and I think it'll do well :3

ooh! I suppose moving to Dundee is something too; I'm sharing a flat with a friend from university ^^

    - Stopped playing NS
    - Bought an Xbox360
    - Played far too much Guild Wars (and still haven't got my damn minipets...)
    - Made a shopping list for weapons in Guild Wars (Told you I played too much)
    - Became basically the guild's Champion, mainly due to lack of interest, but largely through battering the hell out of everyone else in the alliance.
    - Settled into my relationship, with the best intention of making it a permanent, til-death-do-us-part, kind...
    - Found out that I actually like lasagna, and various kinds of soup.
    - Quit my job as a PC engineer to go round Europe.
    - Took up a job as a waiter, and have been offered a job as a head waiter, if I'm not doing anything this March...
    - Broke my 17" TFT
    - Bought a new Neovo 17" TFT
    - Got a replacement 17" TFT (in that order...)
    - Started learning wikicode
    - Realised I've bought 6300 Microsoft Points, and spent 6200 of them in the last 2 months...

    Not much else really...

I've been selling shoes... oh god the shoes... no not again... nooo make it stop.

You can't fit that on your feet! No just put, no no just. GOD. I TOLD you to go a up a, wha what do you mean they look larger than they are, how is that even possible? Am I looking at your feet through a some kind of convex lense or something.

And then the music starts and the colors come and they dance, and I'm happy again, and at peace.

There. Now you know what's become of me. That and college. And I thought RETAIL was bad.
