Unless there are specific X360 keyboard and mice, it does NOT support them. The 360 specifically does not support generic PC input devices, because Microsoft requires these devices to be licensed (and therefore be able to tell the 360 as much). Just because a device has USB ports doesn't mean that it'll have drivers for every single USB device, or will have an interface for that type of device, or will even use a protocol that that device can speak. And Microsoft has specifically announced as much about the 360.

The opposite is sort of true though, some 360 peripherals (X360 wired controllers) do work on PC as long as you have the right driver.

If you recall, Microsoft released two versions of the 360 controller, one for 360, and one for PC. Both versions worked on PC, except the "PC" version had a driver CD. The 360 version still worked with a freely downloadable driver. Of course if the driver wasn't available, it'd be difficult to support. Somebody would have had to go and WRITE such a driver. And imagine a closed platform, where you CAN'T write such a driver. Now you understand the problem and why Microsoft can so easily block keyboards and mice from working with the 360.

Can someone explain to me why a port is so different? It's basically a miniaturized PC, should just be able to fiddle with control inputs and voila.

Different architecture (don't know if 360 actually has a diffrent architecture than pc, but I assume it does). This is also (one) of the reason why few games are ported to Macs.

    The discussion isn't pointless.

Why cut-off brainstorming of a potentially great project?

Let us brainstorm and discuss. You don't have to participate.

You aren't brainstorming. If anything I'd say what is happening here is flame baiting. In terms of pro's for an xbox360 port they are pretty mind numbingly obvious, there isn't much point in discussion that. So really, we can just argue about weather it's feasible and weather control pad players would get whooped by m&k players. There's nothing really new to add to either side other then useless conjecture.

Development of the PC title will take a while and is still a fair ways down the road, at that point if an xbox360 port is technically feasible and economically plausible then this discussion could resume on a level "is it worth it or not?" standpoint and some real technological data to back up our discussion. Right now we don't even know what the source version of NS will look like, let alone if 360 steam is capable of running third party software.

A fall dashboard update came out today for X360 - Oct 31st 2006. They finally added support for all USB keyboards. I tested it out and voila, it WORKS. The HOPE never dies. Now we just need mouse support and you got yourself the basic controls for NS 360. OMG. I'm so hyped right now. So much stuff going on.

    My fear is...

Announcing the sequel to a much loved PC game, adding it will also be available for [insert console] and then screwing up what made the original PC game so popular so it will run on a console... Deus Ex 2 anyone?

In Deus Ex 1 I loved the area specific targeting, the inventory system that made you shuffle your precious items around to see if you could squeeze in that GEP gun etc etc, in Deus Ex 2 they took out the area specific targeting (too hard to implement on a console control system) and simplified the inventory system (Console didnt have a mouse to allow for item shuffling) etc etc...result was : No Deus Ex 2 for me <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

I would hate to see the same happen to NS.

Should do what the console world does to the PC lot, release a popular game on console..then about a year later rehash it for the PC, without bothering to actually recode it to work on a PC (Halo 1, and probably Halo 2 - I wont buy Halo 2 ... who wants yesterdays rubbish ?)

Oh god... Could you imagine fading with a 360 controller?

    That would turn out distasterous....

why would anyone play an fps on a console
  • PseudoKnightPseudoKnight Join Date: 2002-06-18 Member: 791Members
The better question is "why would a console player want to play NS?" And the answer is obvious. Not all gamers have gaming PCs.

    Commander mode would be easy.

Fast paced-first person is another story.

For the same reason you play FPS on a console.

I don't want a Source port to the 360. Well maybe, but that's only if there will be a Source port to the PC. It also depends on the success of the PC port.

I would rather want some sort of singleplayer spinoff. That would not divide the multiplayer community at all.
