Requesting that people use something other than 4-letter words to express themselves is an attempt at fostering slightly more intelligent conversation than is usually seen online. Thank you for proving our point.

Trust me coil, fighting idiocy is a losing battle.

To provide a family-friendly forum for a game that deals with marines with big guns, aliens that want to eat your face, and getting the pants scared off you.

This is an official forum. I guess the NS team doesn't want us sailor-mouths scaring off all the venture capitalists. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

It's all for the good of the community, but really, it can be bypassed. I won't say how though, but I may use it when required <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

It can be done unnoticeably as well, but I wouldn't suggest it. It's against the "rules". <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

I'm fine with censors, but I think a few words on it don't have to be censored. (and why is "damn" NOT censored compared to these words? heh)

censorship is probably because the devs don't wont children running around the house screaming "stfu n00b" and blaming it on NS.

You haven't proved jack. Your pretenses of "maturity" are arrogant and pathetic, and there's a HUGE difference between "requesting" and outright censorship.

It all comes down to someone ELSE deciding what's "decent" for the REST of us to say and do, and things simply do not work that way. The PMRC is a fine example of that, as their absurdity and arrogance went so far as to slap a parental advisory warning for LYRICS on an INSTRUMENTAL album. Yet, i have no doubt that people here would be the first to bash them. Same with the politicians who are trying to get FPSes banned, and i know you'd all bash them just the same. Why? Because you all know it's going to end up in the same place; First it's one thing, then another, then another, until nothing worthwhile is left and the person making the "rules" may as well be the only one talking. If someone can decide that "**obscenity**" is "indecent" NOW, what's to stop someone here from censoring anyone who disagrees with them because of some convoluted notion that it's "not decent" either? "Decency" is reletive at best, and you all know it. Reletive rules DO NOT WORK and certainly do not make any sense. You know that too. In some religions, it's "indecent" for women to not cover themselves head to toe with cloth, even their face.

Oh, but someone saying something as insignificant as "**obscenity**" gets you up on your high-horse. Riiiiiight. The bottom line is, if you support such censorship, you're nothing but a hypocrite, as well as quite a bit of a candyass. You cannot rationally be supportive of the 1st amendment in "real life", then come here and be supportave that it means NOTHING. I'm not bringing up the 1st amendment strictly on a constitutional basis here. My point is that it wasn't created on a whim, [u]it was created because it was a damned good idea[/i], necessary for the progress of ideas. You can't, and musn't ignore that fact. Even on something as seemingly insignificant as a message board.

As i've said before, an idiot is still an idiot, with OR without "swear words". Likewise for intelligent people. And in the case of intelligent people, who the **obscenity** do you think YOU are to decide what intelligent people can and can't say? To censor swear words simply means that YOU are more hung up on them than the people who use them.

This is a private forum and as such is not in any way covered by your right to free speech. Flayra can delete anything you say at whim.

    Nuff said.

Or they can simply ban anyone who choses to "bypass" the rules.
You want to practices your "free speech", start your own website like <a href='http://maddox.xmission.com/' target='_blank'>this guy</a>.

Next time you have a gripe (stupid or not) take it in the appropriate place. (PM the moderators or post it in a feedback section.)

Some people would rather not see a million posts filled with obsceneties. Obsceneties promote insults which makes for a bunch of unhappy forumers which makes for a bad rep for NS.

    Censorship = No freedom?

    Tough.

Using the forum is a privilege, not a right, so quit your whining.

Although I personally find a few words being blocked which I don't think are really that bad. :/ Such as "to be annoyed" and you want to say you are "p---ed at someone"...

Censorship is stupid. They're just words. Plus in a medium like this, it's very easy to defeat, because they use a simple string equivalence test. And it slows down the forum response time a little bit.

On a related note, for some reason "dog" was censored on the old DoD forums. I don't think we ever found out why.

Mouth, I never said I had any desire to limit intelligent people's ability to converse. However, the majority of people on the internet are flaming morons who really should never have been allowed access to a computer in the first place.

You'll notice that the policy in #naturalselection is less strict than that on the forums - we don't really mind infrequent swearing; however, constant swearing or especially harsh language (like f###) will get you kicked. That kind of open-ended policing isn't possible on the forums, unfortunately, so the intelligent posters get censored along with the idiots.

To make a rather extreme analogy, what if a very reasonable person argued that murder should not be illegal, because sometimes there is a very real, justifiable reason for it (I don't know what that reason would be, but it's an example)? You can't legalize murder even if sometimes it could be justified, because there are people who simply can't handle that responsibility - they would abuse the right and kill people for no reason or poor reasoning, and would be able to hide behind its legality.

Similarly, we restrict swearing and controversial subject matter because while the intelligent poster might be able to carry on a worthwhile discussion, Joe N00b will start a flame war or some immature jack-off thread and hide behind the fact that "it's ok to use those words on this forum."

Honestly, I shake my head every time I see "** obscenity **" in someone's post... I shake my head that they couldn't find a way to say what they wanted to without resorting to such crass language. I agree that swears do not an idiot make... but they *do* make an idiot a lot less palatable.

And yes, someone else *is* deciding what you can and can't say, Mouth. You signed an agreement when you signed up for these forums; abide by it, please, or leave. If you disagree with the policy on the boards, you don't have to post here. Please respect Flayra's decision.

Anyone with even a small amount of knowledge of constitutional law can tell you that trying to bring up the First Amendment right to Freedom of Speech in an argument about censorship on a private internet forum is completely pointless. Nowhere, anywhere, does any law state that we are required to allow you to say anything you want. This is a private institution here, giving us the ability to censor whatever we want. If you don't like it, you can leave.

I've said this before, and now I'll say it again:
I'm American. I respect the Bill of Rights. Freedom of Speech is one of the greatest parts of being American. That being said, you have no rights in here, whatsoever.
