Not sure what to make of it right now, but I think Google is sort of giving up on their Google Video.

Look at it this way. Now, YouTube will have adsense ads, and not giant crappy, in-your-face flash ads.

Dang, YouTube had only 25 employees.... and it sold for 1.6 BILLION. They're set for life!!! Good for them. They had a great idea, expedited it well, and got a little lucky.

    I'm jealous...

I'm not jealous in the slightest, but it's not like they have cured cancer or anything, 1.16 billion dollars for what basically is a brand with an attached userbase is *alittle* unfair. Yes, they kickstarted internet video-sharing because of their refined streaming technology, but it wasnt the slightest revolutionary.

Meh, and honestly YouTube is annoying with their flash player. Downloading a movie off from there is such a pain <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

    hear ye,

Google plans to leave youtube be and continue with google videos.

It makes sense to get a bigger footprint into the exanding world of online video

Google is not abandoning video.google.com at all.

They have announced that its simply a new moneymaker for them. All the YouTube employees will stay on, they'll keep their offices, name, trademark, just that Google will also get a percentage of the sums, and be a top investor.

If you use Firefox, there are a few extensions you can use to download the video. It's in FLV format, so you'll need a decoder for that, though. I think ffdshow can decode FLV files...

Well it's easily done, but I for one pass through two apps (the UnPlug extension to easily get the .flv, then FLV converter to convert it to an avi or mpeg).
It's not that VLC can't read FLV's, but I just prefer having normal video files if possible.
