<div class="IPBDescription">No error, IE7?</div>I have a very strange problem that others appear to have as well over on the NSA forums ( <a href="http://www.nsarmslab.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=7053" target="_blank">1</a>, <a href="http://www.nsarmslab.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=7002" target="_blank">2</a>, <a href="http://www.nsarmslab.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=6538" target="_blank">3</a> ) but their solution doesn't fix my problem. Supposedly the Internet Explorer 7 Betas conflict with Steam in somehow. Anyway, I have IE7B3, and when connecting to NS servers and I get to the verifying resources stage NS just instant crashes with no error messages. However if I uninstall IE7 and revert to IE6, Steam is just completely broken and can't even launch without getting an error. I'd prefer to fix the problem and stay on IE7, for <b><a href="http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,125772,pg,3,00.asp#ie6" target="_blank">certain security reasons</a></b>, even though I use Firefox.

Any help? I can post configs or other information if needbe.

(Source engine games have no errors.)

After uninstalling IE7B3, here is what happens:
<!--QuoteBegin-Me on SomethingAwful Forums+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Me on SomethingAwful Forums)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->
I started getting this error when I uninstalled IE7B3, because people on other forums have said that causes Natural Selection to crash at certain times while connecting to servers. Well, I get that crash error so I decided to uninstall IE7B3, and now I get this error when starting up Steam. Please note that I have already uninstalled, deleted all registry keys having to do with Valve or Steam and then reinstalled but to no avail.

<a href="http://www.scootgaming.com/Other/steam_error1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.scootgaming.com/Other/steam_error1.thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" /></a>

By the way, I AM NOT ON WINDOWS VISTA. Windows XP Proffessional, just using a Windows Vista skin. And then to make matters worse, I also get this error while installing Steam.

<a href="http://www.scootgaming.com/Other/steam_error2.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.scootgaming.com/Other/steam_error2.thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" /></a>

I have no idea where this error is coming from but I never would get anything like that while IE7 was installed.

To reiterate:
This error only comes up when IE7B3 is not installed. IE6 is working as normal, but I use firefox instead anyway.

Thanks.

    I had the same issue with Steam earlier this morning, and after uninstalling Steam/Norton/NS/SP2 countless times I stumbled upon this thread <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
    After cursing at Steam and uninstalling IE7B3, things went back to normal with any steam problems.. I dunno what is causing yours.. Did you try reinstalling IE6?

    Can't fix your problem, but you sure fixed mine! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

    Your situation is new. Everyone who has had this problem has solved it by removing IE7B3. Did you try to solve the problem some other way? Perhaps you have changed some settings and now IE6 isn't working with steam. I'm not going to look into your specific problem, but it is on my todo list to install IE7B3 to debug the problem. If the problem is in NS I will fix it for 3.2, but if it is in Steam I will send the appropriate info to valve and hope they can address the issue.

    Until then, I recommend you take Thresth's advice and reinstall IE6 and/or steam.

    I did a repair on Windows XP, which seemed to fix most of the problems, NS is working now and Steam is running without problems. However, it completely broke IE6, and I would hit that WININET.dll error if I tried to run it. Wozer suggested doing this: "rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\Inf\ie.inf" which fixed my IE6 problems. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

    Actually puzl they've stated on their site that Steam doesn't support Microsoft beta products... so basically it has nothing to do with NS.

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->

    Question
    Does Steam support Internet Explorer 7.0 BETA and Windows Vista BETA?

    Answer
    Steam does not support Internet Explorer 7.0 BETA and Windows Vista BETA - the use of operating systems and web browsers still in the beta testing stage with Steam is not recommended.

    In fact you can't play any HL/HL2 mods, so it's not only an NS related issue.

    Actually Thresththh, when I still had IE7B3 installed and before I made this thread, Source games would work perfectly. Not sure about other HL mods though, and I only hit trouble in certain NS servers, usually seemed to be ones with fast download enabled.

    Oh, and if I connected to a server successfully and joined another that would cause me to crash, NS would just completely lockup and I would have to shut down my computer to fix it.

    Ah right, thanks for the info Tresth. Saved me the trouble of going through the ie7 install pain.
