a decent question
Hello I am tommy hayden. i am new just signed a few days ago. just wondering if NS runs ok with dial up. i havent downloaded it yet but i just wanna know if it might run good
Despite what people say about the pings, just about everything over Steam is playable with ping up to around 230~240, depending on how good you are at compensating. I play on a few US server, where, despite having a 2mb DSL connection, I ping at around 170, and the game is still eminently playable.
56k is playable with NS. There is no doubt that you are at a disadvantage, but there are many ways to be successful with a 150-200ms.
After spending almost 2 years on dial-up with 56k, I would say that skulking (the basic Kharaa life-form) is the hardest thing to do on dial-up; but playing as the lerk (support unit), and to a lesser extent the fade (primary damage dealer) is acceptable on 56k.
As a marine, you'll have to accept that the ping delay means you can't really pull off split-second reaction shots (i.e. killing a skulk that got the jump on you); so try and work around this by being more aware and staying with your squad.
Commanding is the least ping-dependant role in NS. Dropping med-packs quickly has a slight delay, but don't worry if you get shouted at for this- the commander is often the first person criticized by a marine for his death
Remember to use dial-up rates for Steam games. I recommend:
well another problem also is that my connection speed is about 26.7 all the time maybe on good days 34.5. also something else is i used to play DOD online and sometimes it would be ok but i remember my ping being in the 1000's sometimes . and yes one more thing i have steam but idk how to use it well lol

Basically, anything below ~240ms is playable
