:o
China's Ministry of Culture (MoC) has put down a law forbidding people under the age of 18 from playing MMO games that feature Player Killing o.O
The MoC is also putting down legislation that the companies who run these games are to integrate age authentication measures (using their citizen cards so it's not quite just a 'are you over 18? yes/no) into their registration system to help enforce the law.
I guess this could be a discussion article but I'm not really looking for absolutely serious discussion on the issue, more just bringing it to people's attention so they can either say something thoughtful on the whole issue OR just laugh insanely :p

edit: oop! almost forgot! accompanying comic to go with it :3

While the article does suggest by its wording that it's all multiplayer games with PvP, the interview quotes indicate it's more likely to be games that you can achieve ranks off killing other players and progress like WoW (MMORPG) or Gunz (not sure what the heck gunz really is but it's not an MMORPG :p ).
Obviously they can only do this on games that run with a registration system so quake 3 for example (which doesn't have any persistant character advancement anyway) would probably be exempt from the ruling :o
Course this is all just theorising on my part...
I think they've mainly got their sights set on MMOs mainly cf, though once they've tackled them they might move on to smaller fry like BF2, hard to tell really.
In that article they mention they're also trying to install auto-kick timers into games to stop people playing for harmful lengths of time; it's starting to sound like korea XD
align edit: the parents don't have a say unless they let their kids register on their citizen cards. A kid can't play them with their own details so they'll either have to scam their parents out of their card number (no idea how easy or difficult it is nor what the laws say about using other people's cards) or get a fake one (much like ID in the uk; people under the age to get into clubs usually have a fake or two to get through when they get IDed :3 ).
I'm not saying everyone under 18 is a l337 or a pain in the rear (far from it) but it would probably cut down on the number of immature lil runts who run around screaming "OMG I DID THINGS WITH YOUR MOTHER OLOLOL"... well except for the over 18 'kids' who do it. Sadly there's no system in place that can weed them out yet :p
Hmm....about 42 more years or so to go. By then I'll be happy and retired (hopefully)
China has a few 'silly' rules here and there. Nothing too special, really.
EDOT : I don't know if that comic needs fixing....probably not though. Hong Kong is like...a pinhead at that scale. All I know is that we have our own seperate laws from China
Well... it is Communist China we're talking about here.

War of the worlds is rate PG and its quite depressing, loads of killing and all of that, but then theres an mmorpg, like WoW, which is nothing wrong with its jus a made up thing but its an 18?
Now i know War of the worlds is made up too be its filmed, its real people and stuff...
Anyway iam 15 (almost 16) and i play a game called Kalonline which is korean, due too this stupid law would i not beable too play it cause of the registration? (btw iam in the UK)
So basicly they put it as if you select China as where your from and your say 13 it will come up saying your not old enough, so you jus select a diffrent country? 0.0
Or will it be another system ?

its because you kill other players, read the artilcle
As for the reason, I don't think so much it's just because of the player-killing... if you look carefully at what she says in the interview she seems to hint that it's equally if not more because of the competitive nature they foster; think about it.
In PvP games the measure of your character is the other players so they end up burning vast amounts of time playing to keep 'in the race' if you like. :3
