#nslearn Is Back!

nInnIn Join Date: 2004-09-20 Member: 31826Members
Hello,

Before NS hits the my games list a few of us got together and decided it was time to bring back #nslearn on mIRC on gamesurge. If you are a new player or a seasoned veteran and you need some tips on your gameplay please stop on by and schedule a session with one of the OP's.

We will be having a website soon hosted by NSArmslab, ( thanks Ryan ), and some really decent articles. We will be covering everything from basic marine, pressure marine, commander, skulking, lerking, gorging, fading, onos and competitive play.

Even if you are a new clan and want some tips stop on by, I'm sure one of the staff could help you with strategies.

Also I would like to take this time to mention some other channels on gamesurge that are their for the community: #farmteams for open recruitment into competitve clans ( for both teams and players looking to join teams ), #findscrimns for finding scrims and reserving servers for those scrims, #findnsscrim for more finding scrim action and #nspickup for those looking to pug, (pick up game).

Thanks for all of your support.

I believe that nothing's official for the My Games list yet, but Unknown Worlds is trying to set something up with Valve.

I thought this was a good project and showed great community initiative - good luck to you and the others with the ressurection of NSLearn.

What exactly is going to make #nslearn succeed now, when it has failed in the past? Other than the possibility of an influx of new blood I mean.

You answered you own question here. It is here to help new players understand the joys of NS, before they find invisible flying heavy armors and 10000 hp onos with unlimited charge fascinating.

If you are a new player, #nslearn is the place for you.
If you are someone who wants to improve your skill in NS, #nslearn is for you.
If your a pub team who wants to break it into competitive play, #nslearn is for you.
Any kind of NSPlayer, #nslearn is for you.

So you see, #nslearn is here to help both pub AND clan communities.

Thus all NSPlayers should know about #nslearn as it is a GOOD thing.
Anyone who wants the NS community to grow will advertise #nslearn

The only problem you are going to have is advertising. If you advertise on these forums, you'll get a few, if you advertise on IRC, you'll get some more, but the people that really need the help will be the non forum members, and have never used IRC.

    yes that true.

it would be better if nslearn get a teamsize from 30-40-50 members and join permanently on server with big slots.
The most noobs are on big servers.
So they can give a hand directly and tell also: hey theirs a channel nslearn and maybee give the newbies email addys if he have questions.

Maybe getting 3 - 4 server (ask the clans?) to highlight in that red glowing text to advertise where to get an IRC client, how to connect to the network and how to connect to the channel? Maybe ask if they can add #nslearn to their name.

The NS community is heavily dependent on IRC. Most IRC programs are very intimidating to first time users, and many new players forego it in lieu of simpler chat proggys like MSN, AIM, ICQ, and Yahoo. And yes, the likes of Trillian that handles all of the above.

I speak from experience, as new teams that register in leagues hate it and would much rather stick with what they have. mIRC For New Users is a very comprehensive tutorial written by a friend of mine to help players install mIRC, and it happens to be webbed in the New Player Forum.

Send any new NS players to this link and urge them to get mIRC - it's free. :>

In the long run, you'll be helping the community by doing so, including #nslearn.

Ingame advertising works the best. If YOU (yes YOU) love #nslearn and want it to help new people put the #nslearn after your name in-game.

    Example: Hassaan<#nslearn>
NSPlayer: Whats this #nslearn and how do i join it?
Me: Nslearn is a program designed to help blah blah blah............

Also if you use IRC idle #nslearn, and it wouldn't hurt some devs idling it too

You don't have to install mIRC. You can just go to www.gamesurge.net/chat and use the java applet.

Edit: From what i've heard there will be a nslearn website soon

#nslearn hardly failed in the past, I just didn't have the energy or time to run it anymore.

We had I think over 30,000 unique visitors view the articles, mustang would have better statistics.

How do you define success depot ?

I believe the word I just used in my last post was "stability". A website would go a long ways in showing the community and new players alike this is a serious attempt. Yes, we realize it takes a lot of time and effort to keep something like this going.

    Ok,

As of last night myself and {LoC}Golden helped about 7 people with #nslean topics. I was up till 6:00am est with these people. Teaching simple things like proper base layouts, bhopping, lerk movement, aim tips, commander tips and basic tips in general.

A website is being prepared as we speak, and will be hosted by NSArmslab. Two tutorials have already been written, one on bhopping and jmms is working on a fade article. I asked the people that we helped to put #nslearn in their name if they felt we helped them. This is is all in one day, I think that is quite an accomplishment.

The people of #nslearn are doing everything that is possible as of right now. For those of you who feel that we shouldn't of advertised yet, well you are wrong. If we didn't advertise then the 7 people we helped last night wouldn't of gotten the info and would still be less informed.

Yes I agree once the website goes up we will see a lot more people being helped. In the meantime we are doing what we can to give back to the community. I'm working on a pub for #nslearn as we speak. Once the website goes up things will be a lot more clear. As of right now the only means of advertisement I have are forums, mIRC and in game.

So I say instead of doubting us, why not support us. Hey here's an idea if you think you can do a better job step in and give us a hand. Don't bark from the sidelines if you aren't willing to lend a hand.

The first post was an attempt to bring more people who need help to #nslearn not to justify our means. The post did what it was meant to do, and now I am doing what you want, justifying it. So are you going to do what we want? Support us?

I would suggest focusing on more basic maneuvers and strategy rather than bunnyhopping. Perhaps reserve bunnyhopping for an advanced page?

We are currently on build on a tool for natural selection players where you can get news headlines from our page and ns.org, server query and at second their will be a chat integrated.
the tool in nearly finished, at moment we work server site to implement the chat.

maybee that will be a better step as irc channel. cause it is software like msn

I agree, first a good understanding of basic movement, and dodging abilities should be taught, and then move onto the advanced techniques.

When I first joined up to NS, I had already read the old manual, the one from the perspective of the TSA multiple times because I had yet to get a copy of Half Life. I played pretty well but it took a while to get better. But, I got ahold of the #nslearn website and taught myself to bunnyhop from the article there. I went through all of the articles that I could get my hands on and read through them, multiple times on the ones that I thought were really important at the time. I scoured the place for information well before I had even thought of joining the competitive community. Because of those articles I didn't completely suck the first time I faded. Sure, I got solo'ed by an lmg the third time, but I actually had an inkling of how to blink-swipe. The entirety of my ability to comm, I learned from #nslearn. (And believe me, I haven't gotten much better. : P) When it went down I was shocked and rushed to the irc channel to find that it had died.

So now that it's back up, I can say that this is amazingly rocking. Thank you so much for putting the effort into the community. It's rare enough to find people that are helpful in a pub, so this is a great thing that you guys are doing. Thanks a bunch.

Well once the website is up, you can guide people to the site. My computer kind of sucks so It's hard for me to have 2 irc running, vent and ns all at one time. I'll ask some of the other #nslearn people with higher end machines if they wouldn't mind helping out over there.
