How To Use Spore?

no, really.
I have killed a grand total of 1 person toal with spore cloud. I have spread about... 50 spore clouds today. Where did I go wrong? Should I be aiming in FRONT of people?

A normal marine came running down the glass hall in Hera today. I spored the **** out of the glass hall. The mofo must have run through 6 of my spore clouds, and yet he lived, and killed me.

Aim in front of people, I guess. But if you're in a long hallway with a lone marine, I'd recommend fleeing. Spore is mostly useful for softening up marine forces in tight places.

spore has a HUGE radius. aim anywhere near the person and they will take at least some damage from the cloud. Spore isn't meant as an assualt weapon, however. A marine who is activly running away from a sporecloud will take minimum damage. However, stacked clouds, or versus wounded or stationary marines will kill them quickly. In other words, drop them over infportals ( they take damage before they even completly spawn, nasty!) armories (perferably when a cluster of marines are around it), phase gates (again, spawning marines will get hurt before they notices the cloud is there), or anywhere you don't want the marines sitting around. Alternatly, spam the marine base with clouds until the death messages start rolling in. A lerk with adren3 can generally get 3-5 clouds in the air at one time.

Yeah, there's nothing more satisfying than casually walking into the marine base and shooting a spore pod at the armory, where 5 marines are gathered to load themselves with ammo they'll lose in seconds.

Spore is a base assault weapon. Using it against turtled Marines will net better results then using it in a hall where he can get out of the cloud.

If your assaulting a base, keep your clouds on there Armory and Portals.

Get them as soon as they respawn and as they run for ammo (they NEED to get ammo unless its dropped for them).

Just keep as many Marines in the cloud(s) as long as possible. Simple.

Do not use spores like spikes. You dont shoot spores at people.

You have to get the marines distracted with something else first (IE you need backup), and then you lay down spores so that they cover as many marines as possible (while also not wasting any of the spore volume into walls), prioritizing HA (they cant move out of it as fast) and marines that arent actively running around.

Spores are very strong, but only as a support weapon. 1 lerk w/ spores vs a marine of any type, the marine wins provided hes smart enough to walk out of the spores.

Spores really only are good for spamming spawn portals, they dont hit buildings so you can constantly kill marines with 10 of them with out damaging the portal.

Its best used in support with umbra, and anything else past that. You take less, they take constant, but low amounts of damage, You may not get kills but it will seriously tip the favor of battle in your teams favor during base assults. Spore does have a use 1v1 as well, drop a umbra and spores infront of it, then spike the marine. They take two low sums, and you take almost none, eventually you'll win, by death or flee. (For when you cant run, due to being boxed in or fleeing will result in losing undefended towers or something. Usually runing like a sissy is fine. )

you guys are forgetting another powerful use of them... as a deterent.... No marine wants to walk through a spore cloud... so when it's one on one or you are guarding something, use them like gorges use webs, to keep them at bay. If you are a lone lerk vs a HA guy, shoot him with spikes till he starts coming after you, then retreat around a corner and shoot a spore cloud in the corner of the hallway... if he still keeps coming, keep backing up around corners and laying down spore clouds.. Smart marines will give up and find easier prey, stupid ones will be dead. Also, if the enemy is attacking a hive or an outpost of yours without the aid of siege cannons... lay a spore cloud or two in the area, so they start to retreat, then start walking the clouds back and around corners so they keep backing off or get gassed. think of a spore cloud like a spike that explodes when you shoot it... the spore will keep going in a straight line till it hits something then it will expand into a cloud, so if you shoot it angled across a corner, you can get it fairly far down the hall without exposing yourself at all... dont ever shoot it straight at marines, if you miss it's going to keep going till it hits a wall and that may be too far away to do any good... aim spore clouds like you would rockets in TFC... aim for the feet and use the "splash damage" of the cloud to hurt them... also a good idea is to shoot one behind them, so they are cut off, then one in front of them... then pepper them with needles or bite em... spore cloud alone can kill them but it is more effective to be used in conjunction with other weapons when it's one vs one as you cant always sit around and wait for them to die...

Hey for some more help on Lerks... check out my nifty guide im writing here..

To kill with the spore cloud you must stack the damage. Don't just throw one up and assume it'll do the deed put 4 or 5 in the exact same place when they walk into it they will die instantly.

use vetns.. going threw vents into a marine base and sporing all over the place drives em crazy! espicially if other aleins are attacking them

Add Scent of Fear to the equation and your Lerk becomes the alien version of the Orkin Man -- Gets Marines where the hide.

Don't forget, detonated spore clouds pass through walls too. On bast you can fire spores up the elevator shaft to where it meets the floor of the marine base and gas up the entire elevator side of the marine stronghold. Nobody will get close to the elevator shaft. Get another lerk to gas up the vent side and you've got yourself a nice tight ball of marines to roast right in the middle.

As Typhon stated, you don't want to use spores in the same places that you'd use spikes. Since sporecloud does damage over a large area and in a decent duration of time, you want to drop sporeclouds in confined areas, where the marines have difficulty getting out of there quickly enough to avoid taking damage. Vents are probably the ideal place to hit marines -- it's also useful if a marine has to go down an elevator like the one leading up to Hera's CC.

Another good use is to use the area of effect to stop marine counter-attacks. You can damage a group of marines just as easily as a single marine using a sporecloud. Furthermore, the marines will probably scatter in every direction if you shoot a spore into the middle of a group. Once they have scattered, it's a lot easier to pick them off with your spike shooter or your teeth.

A question. What is spore cloud's effectiveness when FF is on? I never want to use it, because I don't want to kill the freindly Onos that are taking out the spawn portals at the same time.
