Baldur's Gate Engine Games

which is best?
so, I'm bored witless and I'm going through my collection of games I never finished. This list includes undisputed classics like Deus Ex - and I think I'll make a separate thread about unfinished games after this :>

the point of THIS thread, though, is to decide which of the several Baldur's Gate style games I own I should try to play again. I own many if not all of them, but the only one I successfully finished was Planescape: Torment, and sweet jebus, was that an awesome game. definitely in my top 5 ever. I may just play that again... but I also own Baldur's Gate, maybe BG2 (I thought I bought them in a set but I can't find BG2 atm), Icewind Dale, and possibly more...

now, I played a good ways through BG1, but I was borrowing it from a friend at the time and I think he had to take it back before I finished it. I forget if that's the only reason I stopped playing...

Icewind Dale, I tried, and got heartily pwned right out of the first town, so I got frustrated and quit.

sooo, which should I pick up again? =P

Planescape Torment wins. I have still have to see another game with a story that comes close, let alone a story that is better.

    edit: I can't spell

BG2 is the best that I've played (I would say it's probably the best RPG ever, if you don't call Deus Ex an RPG), and the expansion is a lot of fun as well (although it gets a bit ridiculous once you get into the uber-high levers). Playing BG1 can give you some interesting backstory, but the low level restriction is going to leave you wanting more even at the end of the game. BG2's story is somewhat connected to that of BG1, but it's pretty much it's own thing, so if you want to skip the prelude and get right to the real deal, you should just play BG2 first. It's longer and has much greater depth in both story and gameplay.

If you do decide to play BG1 first, you can import your BG1 character into BG2. This can give you something of a head start as the maximum XP cap in BG1 is higher than the initial XP BG2 would otherwise give a new character, but you lose out on all kinds of new character options available in BG2. Personally, I think it's better to take advantage of some of the cool new stuff that BG2 offers than to hold onto your old character.

I haven't played the other Infinity engine games yet mostly because I don't have the massive amount of time they all require to fully appreciate them. Additionally, Icewind Dale seemed like too much of a dungeon crawl for my tastes, and I only recently manged to get my hands on a legit copy of Planecape.

Edit: BTW, the collector's edition of BG2 (which I own) came with a CD containing a special patch to the game. There are a few items that can only be attained with that patch. Most of the them are pretty good, but are mostly just fun gameplay concepts put together by the developers. There is one item, though, that's absolutely insane, and I'm not sure I'd want to play the game without it. Without spoiling the details, it's pretty solid on its own, but if you combine it with one of the features in the expansion pack you can make one hell of an unbalanced but hilariously devastating character.

I have played every Infinity Engine title save Icewind Dale 1, and finished all but TOB (it does get ridiculous), and Icewind Dale 2 (the bottom of the volcano gets me every time). Planescape wins, hands down. BG2 is certainly not to be sneered at, but it does not even try to be better than P:T. It's a sword & sorcercy novel, Planescape is a modern epic.

IWD had my favourite music and character art, but was just a dungeon-crawler when all's said and done, much like BG, BG2, IWD2 and all of them save Torment.

    Torment, of course, utterly rocks.

... though I am getting this strange urge to go buy IWD again, and maybe finish it this time.

Planescape: Torment is the obvious answer here. It's so good I've bought D&D supplements because of it.
