basically, I've got some scratched up CDs and DVDs that I don't want to pay to have fixed... are there any cheap chemicals/methods one can use to make scratched software function again?

For temporary fixes, know that grease that can build up on your skin, especially where your nostril meets the rest of your face?

    Yeah.

Don't even think about Mantrid's idea. A slightly abrasive material applied in small doses until the disk works beats nose-oil 24/7.

it's called a "Skip Doctor" it's ~20 bucks at any CD store / electronics store

the light abbrasiveness of toothpaste will work for small scratches, but for mass fixing of non label side damage is the skip doctor

Toothpaste contains many tiny particles of titanium dioxide that are very faintly abrasive. Remember to rub from the hub straight out towards the edge, never tangentally.

Supposedly some guy have done it with a regular nailfile several times, so that's how cheap it can get, but you should probably stick to a real tool like the one TAK suggested.

This could result in farms of geeks being harvested for their grease!

Pssssh, geek farming. We'll take control of the world. People will go to wars over us. They'll play "capture the geek". SAVE THE PRECIOUS NOSE OIL. WITHOUT IT, WE CANNOT DRIVE.

Please, I think we're all intelligent enough to figure things like that out. We can apply incredible logic to everything else, we can do it in that area too.

Unless, of course, women are illogical...

    Damnit.

I heard this one, too. Just make sure you clean all the toothpaste off afterwards. I know that from experience.

    Um... yeah.
