A Veteran Players Opinion

on the current NS players.
I have been playing NS since about the time it came out. Since the summer of 04, I stopped playing since HL2 was coming out soon and CS:S beta etc.. was out and some other games. I came back yesterday and i've played 10-12 games since that time and i've noticed a lot of things with the new school NS players.

First off, everyone is so concerned to win they try rushing and getting the game over with quickly as possible. In the old days we liked to play for more then 5 minutes, so we generally went out, built RTs, fight a few skulks but never rushed there hive within the first 5 minutes.

Another thing i've noticed is everyone gives up really easy and no one has balls. No one builds turrets in the main base anymore, and if its getting attacked they just give up and say whatever... In the old days we used to defend the main base to the last man, the commander would even get out and start gunning them little suckers down , out of the 10-12 games i've been in, 5-6 of them the commander just started recycling things and giving up if we lost the rush on the hive or something of that nature. I can't even count how many times i've lost almost everything except the comm chair but still ended up winning the game, play the game out new guys!

No one has patience, especially when fightintg. People start ejecting the commander if he delays the med pack by a second. And when there fighting, they don't have patience shooting. I take my time and steady my shots, it really only takes 5-6 bullets to kill a skulk you just gota have patience shooting, don't spray and hope to god you hit the sucker.

Everytime I get in the comm chair, people start ejecting me cause im not doing what every other new school comm does, and when I do get the chance to comm people see how fun the game can be.

I post some more thoughts when I play some more games. Just a veteran passing on some advice to new school players

It takes 9 bullets to kill a Skulk, 10 if he innately regens 1 hit point before you kill him.

None of those problems are new, in my first game back in June 03 my team ejected the comm for not dropping them ammo.

It's funny that you should say this, because 1.0x were also the days when aliens organized all but one of their team in the beginning seconds of every game and attempted to wipe out the marine base in a giant skulk rush.

Untrue; regen is not always instant. There is usually a quarter- to half-second delay.

It's a bit of a surprise to see a veteran saying there's not enough turrets being built.

I still don't see why some people think there's "honor" to be found in "fighting to the last man", turreting the base or drudging on when you've obviously lost the game is boring. Incredibly boring.

I don't have all the time in the world to invest in NS, so instead of "fighting to the last" in vain, which isn't even that fun, I'd rather get the next game started so we can have a better shot at doing well, and possibly winning.

Turrents in the main base is the #1 way to prevent your base from dying. Spending 60+ res on turrents in your main should be the primary concern for all commanders. The other, non-important, upgrades can all wait. Turrents in base = victory. The best offense is a strong defense.

Sadly that sarcasm is partially true for the alien side, turn the entire map into an ocean of flesh and marines generally lose.
  • typical_skeletontypical_skeleton Join Date: 2003-02-24 Member: 13944Members
Something tells me Steve isn't being serious?

"turrents" won't even stop a group of determined skulks (unless you build a dozen of them). Once you get that five minute Fade, well... say goodbye to your "turrents". They're worthless.

This worked in 2.0x, pubs were full of turreted bases that 3 onii working together could not plow through effectively. Origin was a map notorious for this.

    -play on a different server

-I've seen players rush hives in versions before 2004.

I also wonder if hawk6 also noticed how people in this forum started to become little disrespectful smacktards who flame everyone's comments unless its a Devs because everyone loves to be a brownnosers. Honestly he is just stating a point and I agree with him. The NS community changed for the worse, I used to enjoy comming to this forum until about 2.0's release because everyone seemed to be friendlier and instead of calling you a noob because you you'd like to speak your mind, they would give reasons why they disagree on the thought or suggestion rather then getting a higher post count by writing useless flames that brings nothing useful to the topic.

I hear you on what the impatience of the current average of NS players. We could all use to be a little kinder and tolerant to each other. Yeah I agree with you there hawk6.

It seems though that the issues you described are things that are per-server behavioral problems. In other words, a server that promotes kindness to new players (or players who are veterans catching up with the current learning curve) or a "comm training" server will be more tolerant.

Try the FX Clan's main server sometime. If there is a problem I know for sure ZXNet (aka ZedeX) would be willing to help you. He and I are what you call idealist NS players. (meaning we play for the atmosphere, sometimes in character, as if the game was real) Sadly his ping to people here in teh US may be a bit high, because he lives in Birmingham. I think that the NS community is perfectly fine. ALthough i would rather see some comebacks of hte 2.x modes (turrets actually being placed [NO FARMS]).
But then again hey, i cant find any good NS servers running non-classic/non-Co maps that are under 150ping

apart from that, UP UP NS... i think its fine, and i enjoy it just the same. i also agreed with whoever said that the players need to adapt to the game, (which is arguably adapting to the players, go figure).
