Windows Vista Beta Screenshots

Remember, it's just a BETA. Microsoft is sure to make this look worse by the time it's released.

<a href='http://news.com.com/2300-1016_3-5805994-1.html' target='_blank'>http://news.com.com/2300-1016_3-5805994-1.html</a>

My feelings:

First picture: Oh, good, I was afraid I was going to have to see all the contents of my folders at one time. Fortunately, Microsoft made the icons big enough that it'll be limited to six. Whew. There goes that fear of "Noneedtoscrolldownitis". Now I'll be able to scroll and scroll... and scroll all day.

Second and Third pictures: Eh, the transparency is a cute feature, but I don't really think I'll enjoy it. I don't use transparency of that kind on Windows 2000, even though it's (partially) available. Personally, I find it distracting.

The haloing required on the lettering in the "Address" bar is ugly. What makes it worse is that the window underneath shines through, which could very well make typing things out hard to see. I really don't like the transparency.

What is with the buttons at the top right of the window (minimize, restore, close)? Why do they have a space on the right but no space on the top? That's distracting. Maybe I'm just obsessive compulsive.

Fourth picture: UGH. The return of the wasted space. I really, really loathe that XP menu. Small icons forever!

Personal beef: I also noticed this: "A redesigned Start Menu in Windows Vista lets users start typing the name of the application they wish to open." People forget where their programs are? How much time is saved by taking one's hand off the mouse, typing out a word, and then placing the hand back on the mouse to click the program name (as I assume is how this will work)? Users shouldn't be so disorganized that they can't sort their programs into appropriate directories.

Overall, this GUI is a minor improvement over the XP interface, but it's still not good. They fortunately got rid of the cartoony look, but they left too much of the bloated, overly large interface.

---------

I don't hate Microsoft, but I don't like Windows XP. I was hoping this new system would be a step away from Windows XP, but it seems like Microsoft actually likes their current operating system. I'm not a Linux/Mac fanboy.

I'm sure the large icons will be an option in Vista, just like they are in XP.

My biggest question about the interface isn't "What things are transparent?" or "How adjustable is the transparency?" or "What bars and buttons and text have changed sizes?" My biggest question is "Does the transparency take up CPU or does it take advantage of my 3D card?"

Is MS using <a href='http://www.deviantart.com/view/20657639/' target='_blank'>this</a> as a basis, or is it the other way around?

I may be mistaking, but in longhorn/vista, alot of the windows effects are placed on the GPU now, not the CPU. Which is a good thing...

Really kinda looks like a cross between whatever is the latest Mac OS and XP. It'll probably have some other functions though, so don't be worrying about the oh-so slightly changed GUI. Look at 95 - 98 - 2000 for instance, not much changed with the look of Windows during that time either. I'm sure it is going to be better in the end.

I do not like the pictures that take up 20% of the screen like that. Maybe next they'll make it when you are browsing your video folder tha video's will be playing in that little icon they have. Either way I still don't like the new looks, plus I like my scroll bar D:

It may look even worse to us people who are very familiar with computers, but maybe with your average joe it might actually be better for them?

The thing I like about Win2k/XP is that, if I want to, I can make it feel generally like any windows OS that i've ever used. All the way back to win3.1. This means file details, file extensions, etc. I do'nt want pretty icons and pictures, I want CONTENT CONTENT CONTENT! I want to be able to see as much as possible at one glance.

I am pretty sure you can configure that in Vista since the same OS is also going to be used by businesses and corporations.

Uh, those screenshots look like OS X. MS is just trying to make their OS look prettier and less scary so idiots will stop buying iFruits. I don't condone it, but I could really care less. It's the least menacing thing about Longhorn. (Vista? Yeah, whatever, like I'm calling it Vista.)

That's why I hate the current trend with computing. Everything must be made for the mainstream. And the mainstream is dumb so everything must be dumbed down. And they call that making it more user-friendly.

If a person is so frightened with megabytes and file extension, that person shouldn't be NEAR a computer in the first place.

You can modify the XP start menu to get small icons, IIRC. I'm pretty sure this'll all be customizeable, and am also pretty sure that it better be at no extra cost. I don't like Windows coming with two crappy styles and then only selling ones they make for extra while people have to use programs like StyleXP if they want to actually customize because Microsoft doesn't release tools themselves. /rant

See, I don't think Vista looks like OS X. I think it looks like it's <b>trying</b> to look like OS X, but failing. I like a "pretty" interface, but I like function to follow very closely with the form in such instances. I've never used OS X (or any Apple computer for that matter, really), but from what I've seen, for the most part Apple operating systems are pretty but also functional. The designers for XP and Vista seem to be totally ignorant to designing a good interface, and are merely attempting to copy what has been done.

Oh, and thanks to <a href='http://www.technudge.com/' target='_blank'>TechNudge</a> for alerting me to the screens.

I just wish they would have an option in the installer so I can drop all the plastic crap at the beginning, though it only takes me about 10 minutes to get everything looking the way I like.

The real interface changes aren't happening until Beta 2, I've heard. We'll see what MS have up their sleeve.
