The presumed influx of players from the addition of NS to My Games is one of the few things that motivates me to continue monetarily supporting my favorite servers.

The community has been shrinking a lot recently, simply compare the forum activity now to the same time one year ago. A lot of servers are sitting empty for large portions of the day.

    We need the new players.

More players does not equal hacks, noobs and lamers. Want to know why?

It happened in CS because it's <b>CS.</b> Of course people are going to hack. It's the brainless-person's game - no skill or strategy required - just spray and hope you hit something. CS can just be played for 10 minutes for a quick fix. Apart from NS: Combat, NS: Classic should barely have these problems at all - you need to play a good 30 minutes to get any satisfying gameplay. Also, NS lacks pathetic hack-only clans like myg0t and JAPS - the myg0t clan run a cheat resource center and when seen in game, they say "Oh, I'm just trying to **** you all off." Those are **** heads.

Just because NS will be viable and visible to more people does not mean it will crumble. CS has three different versions - and any noobs to NS who don't understand NS entirely within a couple of months gameplay they will probably fissle out of the spectrum.

In my experience there are a lot fewer hacks than people think there are.

Some people are so negative and pessimistic about the future of NS. Moving in to Steam games will help it. I don't see any of those whiners you talk about on CS and most the time the whole server is older than me (I'm only 17). Someone just has a negative view on CS and the population of the Half-Life community.

In short I'm with the team and I am as excited as them (if thats possible) about NS being an officially Valve supported modification. New players, fresher faces and willingness to learn will make the community larger and better than before.

For the record, CS is an awesome game. Don't be so quick to bash it an it's players just because you have had some bad experiences with some of them.

CS is what lead me to NS, I wish people could objectively analyze the game rather than bash its community.

CS is a great game, but unfortuntately for me, I couldn't take the community anymore, hence why I came here (and for while haven't competed).

NS owes credit to CS, otherwise it would probably have even lower amount of players, as the HL engine would not be as popular without it.

As the new influx of players come in, yes there will be more idiots that are included with that influx, but there will be smart players as well.

It takes more talent to be "smart" than it does to be "stupid", and talent (atleast in NS) is a scarce resource. So in a matter of speaking, more likely than not, more "stupid" people will be in, since intelligence is a rare resource.

That doesn't mean the ones that come in labeled as an idiot or a stupid player cannot change, it just means starting out it will take longer for them depending on how much they play, where they play, and how much GOOD advice is given to them.

So the new influx of players would be a good thing, but bare in mind more often than not you are probably going to be dealing with an idiot rather than a smart person.

An interesting statistic would be to see how many people who have been playing a long time (pre Beta3) and are still considered idiots due to maladaptive tactics and other inefficencies (such as not listening to players who are clearly better).

If the community were rid of those players, then the new players would have an easier time learning more effective methods of playing.

    <b>"Change or Die."</b>

Yes, there will be problems with the influx of players from the my games list. Yes, there will be hackers, mic spammers, totally ineffective players, Rambos, and many other people we won't like. We <b>Will</b> see a noticable decrease in the quality of NS games, for an unpredictable amount of time. But, we in the end have no other choice.

    <b>"Change or Die."</b>

If we don't get on the my games list, we aren't likely to get many new players. If we don't get new players, the game will stagnate. We'll still have the game, and most likely the developers will continue to support it. We'll still have servers, and on many of them communities will continue to thrive. We'll probably still have CAL leagues and the like. But what we won't have is growth, change, creativity.

    <b>"Change or Die."</b>

Despite all the problems with the influx of new players, it will in the end help the community. I can guarantee you that for every few players that make the game worse, there will be some that make the game better. For every new server that is plug-in'd to the point of insanity, there will be one that will create a new community of players. While the hackers will appear, I am confidant that they will not be tolerated. To put it simply, for bad thing the my games list brings, it will also bring a good thing.

    <b>"Change or Die."</b>

Now let me let you all in on a nice fact of life: it is the good people who win in the end. Not becuase being good makes you stronger, not becuase it grants you some sort of mystical protection, but simply becuase good people help each other out. Selfish players, hackers, rambos, they all do nothing to help each other. On the other hand, those who work with thier teams, those that help new players, these people create friends, communities, things that last. When the rambos, hackers and others have left (and eventually almost all of them will), it will be these groups of friends, these communities that will still be around.

So, if you really do care about the community, stop complaining about the unavoidable bad things and start actually doing something about it. For starters, you might want to write down near your computer the address of the manuals. If you really don't like newbies, then maybe consider another game to play for a week or two when we get on the my games list, and let those with the patience to deal with them handle it. If you run a server, you might want to consider how you want to deal with the newbies, who could potentially be flooding your server. Another suggestion for servers, would be to try to change your servers name to help show whether it is newbie friendly or unfriendly (talking about skill level, not attitude). There are a few more things that have been suggested, and I'm sure if we worked hard we could come up with more. Bottom line though is to stop simply complaining about it, it will happen. Deal with it, adapt.

Just remember- <b>"Change or Die."</b> It's obvious the developers don't want NS to die off, and I doubt anyone here does either. The game is changing, and that's a good thing.

Even if noobs flood NS when it's added to the my games list, there will also be mature and serious players who come with them who've just never heard of NS before. Where the noobs will just play on CO servers all day or just quit because NS takes too much effort/teamwork, the mature players that come will help build the community and ultimately make NS better. I think that cpt. has a legitimate concern, but if the members of the community that already exist will welcome all of the NSPlayers and take them under their wing, then maybe the community will change for the better instead of for the worse. We were all nubcaeks once.

I do not play NS all that much like I used to (back in the 1.04/2.0 days when I used to play constantly), although I still play now and again. This is because pretty much everyone is too good at NS now and it just gets too frustrating and too much hard work needed to defeat the experienced players. I cannot remember the last time I saw a newbie playing this game really, but with the addition of this game to the "My Games" list, it will bring in a massive influx of succulent newbies, and the game will once again be REALLY fun to play once again! I really cannot wait until this happends. We really do need a new fresh player base.

personnaly i can't wait for it to be on the my games list, it means more people which means the game will live longer

besides the guys who don't want to learn will either not play or just play combat, you have nothing to fear unless your a 50lvluberl33tcombat-extramenue player

Think what the company would need. A small community = less profit. That won't work.

I don't think it's so bad. Most CS nubs will play NS once, suck, and go back to CS again. And they lived miserably ever after.

    And Gathers and passworded servers.

That's sad. I can vaguely understand peoples distaste for noobs, but cruelty to newbies? <span style='color:red'>Unacceptable.</span> No excuse.

I always tell this one story of how I had a team of about 9 people on marines and 5 were newbies. Naturally, I go out of my way to be friendly and help out the newbies. And you know what? We won! These aliens weren't stupid either but these newbies comming from TFC, DoD, and CS would just follow me around like a tour guide and with some clever strategic movements got an edge on the enemy and kept it. Truely.

I have two favorite quotes you'll hear me say often:

    1. Just have fun and do your best
    2. Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

The second applies here; although I don't really mean stupid, it's more a means to make the quote humorous. The real meanings of the second quote are the superiority of numbers and the danger of underestimating opponent.

I do like NS's constant evolution. In fact I don't think it evolves fast enough. I would love to see a game that truely fill the motto of "by gamers, for gamers." In other words a game that is made and modified rapidly by a powerful labor resource called the game's community, in this case: us.

    The more players the better.

Drawback is of course, the bigger the community, the worse it gets. It's just one of those pleasant internet curses that the world is plagued by.

As for the new players themselves, I have absolutely nothing against new folks that are patient enough to try and learn the game in a friendly way. Unfortunately I expect a lot of people be less than "friendly" new players though once NS gets into the My Games list.

The problem isn't getting people to teach, its getting people to listen.

When I ran NSlearn I tried to give lessons and advice to those in game who were struggling, and I got very negative feedback.

Even though the techniques they were using were ineffective they still attempted to execute said techniques and basically told me to F off.

They then proceeded to blame the person who killed them for their death with the regular amount of excuses (scripts, h4x, cheats, lag, hitboxes etc..)

I've found that reaching out to others in game is a waste of time. The best method is to advertise then you are willing to help, and let those who want to learn come.

However you will most likely find those who want to improve are few and far between. Ultimately, NSlearn was pretty much a waste of time because there weren't that many people interested.

Well at the [I AM] Servers, we're ready to take on any disruptive behaviors. With our no *extreme* swearing policy and active admins (1-2 admins on at all times pretty much), we're sure to weed out the good from the bad. But all it takes is being friendly to the new guys, while still maintaining an authority figure.

Firewater is (strangely enough) right for the most part. It takes an extreamly patient person to try to teach other how to play the game, as most people don't really want to be better, they just want to own more (meaning they want thier way to work better, not learn a better way). Firewater != an extreamly patient person.

hopefully we get some more CS clanners trying out the NS clan scene with the move to the my games list. Anyone who's looking to clan isn't going to be hooked onto CO in it's current form, as it just isn't a clanable game ATM.

    On a serious note.
    This may sound odd.
But if the hackers do start hacking on NS from the CS community,it'll work like a vaccination. The hack is implemented, then it's discovered how to beat it,then it stays beaten forever. Makes sense,I hope.
Besides,NS already has mic spammers. Nothing new to report there.
