<div class="IPBDescription">it's in HL2DM, why not NS :(</div> can someone make the doom 3 marine avaliable for NS, it's in HL2DM so i think that would make it easier on the person who does it (if anyone does)
do you have a link to that model or something? It'd be highly appreciated if we could have a look at it Isn't your signature a tad bit large? How come the admins are allowing such a large signature?
lol im not sure why they havn't said anything. yer il provide link to it, their isn't a picture of it thought, just a screenshot, but il look for a pic.

Doom3 models use normal maps. HL1 doesn't support them. The model would look like a low-poly version of the model and wouldn't be <i>so cool</i> (like your sig).

anyways,
I have seen the doom marine in Half-life (NOT NS) and it looks quite good, better than the normal NS marine.
the short answer is, usually. If the game has any form of mod community, usually you can convert the game's models to a common format to allow you to import it into a 3d application.
But before you start ripping models out of every game newer than Quake II, keep these things in mind.
1. If you plan on releasing it to the public, don't do it. Other game companies might allow those models used in mods for their own game...but it is illegal to use those models outside the game. Granted, this is not usually enforced, but you are taking the chance.
2. just because you can get your hands on a model, and a skin...doesn't mean that you can just easily slip it into any other game. Remember, modeling and skinning something is between 25% to 75% of the work involved in developing a game. and "ripping" it out of such a piece of hard work would be just respectless.
3. it sounds stupid...but it would be theft of intellectual property you have not paid to play with.... and even if you have paid for it ,the software is still property of the developers, included sounds ,models, textures, and all other copyrighted material. you own just the dvd..the handbook...and a cardoard box maybe. it would be something different if you own d3 yourself, and you are doing your own model port. or do the hard way and model it from scratch,
Modeling being 75% of the developing of a game? What game would that be? I cannot imagine it being more than 10-15% of the game development. My friend is a programming student. And he says game development is around 90% programming and 10% modeling. But I guess that depends on what kind of game you are making?

depends if you do a fullgame with own engine or a mod with some coding work ...
Even if you make a game out of a premade engine, the work put on the actual engine is part of the game, thus making it a large part of the developing of the game.
But I guess if you only count the work you do by working with a premade engine then I guess modeling is pretty much all you have to do. But personally I dont call that game developing.
you say games based on existant engines dont have development processes, or nothing that is worth to be called developing? games like mohaa , rtcw ,deus ex , vtmb, kingpin and other games using licensed engines?
who cares about the coding anyway, we are talking about ripping models, and not a very vague estimation i did.
Your forgetting, codeing is jack without a way to show it visually.Think about it,take only stock models for HL1,maps with no models at all, nothing custom besides the code, and see how great a mod you can make...Personally,models bring the whole game together, would you still have played HL2 if it only used HL1 models...no custom textures or anything, just HL2 story and all,in a HL1 universe, running the source engine...starts sounding like HL:S alot huh?
Also, think about this. The Unreal 2.5 and 2.0 engine is WIDELY used by games everywhere, released by companies from different sides of the world, but really, think about it.Aren't all the games useing the unreal 2.0 engine, then, just mods of UT2004/UT2003 released in a nice package that you pay for?The answer, yes.Indeed they are,try to prove me wrong, besides some legal BS anyone can make a "full scale 100 level game!!1!!1!!" for the unreal 2.0 engine, even a game that completely rebuilds the unreal 2.0 engine...
browse some of the mods for UT2004,some are pratically completely new games without legal issues, and without a nice package...but guess what,it has a bigger community then a legally released game with a nice package because if it didn't,the mod would fall under from not being supported...
I say that the real development of the game lies in the engine, and I consider the rest to be minor work.
I don't call it game development if all you did was 10-40% of the game.
And you who wrote last, Chub or soming, should really learn how to use spaces properly. It's nearly impossible to read your latest post. And to me it made no sense at all, but perhaps thats just me.

well someone mentioned that the game engine is most of the work in a game, that is not true, the game engine allows features like normal maps, bump maps, specular, game physics, and other stuff. models are the main factor in a game, imagine playing CSS maps like Assault, Inferno, and Port, it would be so basic and would look very dead. Models help bring the world to life, yes game physics and water, etc... do that but without models then the realism factor is not there.
anyways back on topic, L0tus mentioned that he had the Doom 3 Marine as a human grunt on Half-life, this could help, this way all that needs to be done is to re-animate it, or you could RIP it from HL2DM, personally i think it would be better to use the one thats already being used in the HL1 Engine.
