I Am Suspicious Some Has Uncapped Their Modem..

<div class="IPBDescription">someone on my cable junction.</div> I have comcast cable, and for the past month, my ping has been trippling between 9-11:30 PM. I have troubleshooted every possible thing I can think of. A tech came out and checked our modem's signal strength and put new wire connectors on the cable lines. It still has the same problem. I get about 2.5-3.0Mbps download and 364Kbps on upload on the speed test at <a href='http://www.speakeasy.net' target='_blank'>www.speakeasy.net</a>

To test something, we paid $10 extra to raise our connection speed from 4Mbps to 6Mbps. The download speed did not change <b>at all</b> but the upload speed doubled and is now 700Kbps, and this test was taken before the bad ping timeframe. When I took it during the bad ping timeframe, it is about the same.

My main question is, if someone on my cable junction has uncapped their modem, how do I find out who it is? Could Comcast help to track them down if it is that case?

What is this uncapping you speak of?

I would like to know how this is done... <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /> I'm the only person within a half mile diameter of my location that uses comcast (we had to have lines run special for us cause they didn't service us, and officialy STILL don't )

So how do I increase my speed to pwnage zone oh great one?

I wish I got at least 1 MB per sec download, than the crappy 600 <b>bytes</b> to 5 kb per sec download I get. Yes very true <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /> .

Comcast should be able to track the person who has uncapped their modems. It's just a matter of wether they (Comcast) are actively monitoring internet connections in your immediate area.

Just hope something like <a href='http://www.geek.com/news/geeknews/2002Nov/gee20021122017460.htm' target='_blank'>this</a> happens to that person <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' />

Uncapping is illegal and can be easily detected, not worth the risk IMO.

Well its only from 9-11pm. After that does the ping go away? Because 2 hours of a slight spike in ping surely wont kill you <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' />

I'm sure if I ASKED Comcast first they'd agree... I'd only uncap to what I should be getting, what I was TOLD I would get

100 MBps Input into my house
10MBps at the router
10 MBps at each PC

This is SUPPOSED to be both up and download...

I dont' get anywhere near that...

Well you'll never get speeds like that with cable/dsl. In your home network you could probably get close to it with the right wires. But the cables outside your house might not be in the best condition. Routing servers might be down, which means slower access to websites and such. Huge spikes in lag. Theres so much out there that really downgrades your 1000100000000000000 gbs in/out.

High peaks when people are awake could cause the network to slow down a bit. Such as with cable but that doesnt happen a lot because, well I suppose the people at Optimum where I live are smart.

And lastly from what I heard from A LOT of people - "Comcast sucks".

Let's just say this doesn't get resolved any time soon, and it is comcast's fault. What are other good providers in the Bothell (Seattle), WA area that are equal or better in quality?

I belive my relatives neighbor uncapped his modem and used some sort of scrambler or so he said so they couldnt trace him. But I havent seen him in about 5 years soooo

I also use Comcast Fl4THeAd and am very pleased with their service and support (I have 3mbit down and 375kbps up). I have never heard of uncapping a modem but know users can (illegally) change or bypass filters at the pole. I don't rent my modem from them btw, I bought the same one from Best Buy and by lowering my cable bill it paid for itself in a year.

If the cable subscribers change or bypass line filters it can easily be traced by Comcast.

I was gona say, if some one is doing this, then comcast will know rather quickly.

all large ISPs monitor your trafic.

Im not sure if this is related to you exact problem or not, but Comcast is currently having routing problems in Seattle with a ATT router. I am in Souther California, and one of the communities I frequent uses a NFO server hosted out of Seattle. Alot of its members are from my area, and have been experiencing extreme choke and ping fluctuation on that server, so when the OP contacted NFO about the problem, they were told that Comcast is currently working to resolve a routing issue between themselves and ATT.

Huh. I get 1.5mbps downloads from FTP servers but my .torrents won't go any faster than 5kbps. And yes, I've read about and tried EVERYTHING related to that damn NAT error. In fact, I even fixed it once, but it broke shortly after my dad updated the router firmware... and it has never worked again.

i have heard my friends say they uncapped their cablemodem and their speeds went from like 3000kb down / 400kb up to like 48 MB down and 12 MB up

of course when time warner saw what they did, they got a nice letter from them explaining their tos violation and permentally terminated their service leaving them with 56k dialup lol

uncapping is indeed not worth the risk, unless you buy your own cablemodem and uncap it before they install your service, then they probably wouldnt care and think it was normal.

my cablemodem speed is generally 4850KB down and 355KB up, no complaaints here <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' />

actually, my isp is cablevisions OOL, and i get 10/1 <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /> but yeah, they cap you if you upload too much, and people try to uncap there modems with 3rd party firmware etc...

Its really not worth it, i read a story about the FBI arresting some guy who uncapped there modem. <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif' />

Maybe your node is saturated. Could be anything....

This could be a probabal cause. I remember when it first started happening, they said there was some down area in the Seattle/Tacoma area, and they didn't know when it would be fixed. Then I asked about it later and they seemed like they have never heard about it <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' />

Do you know a source where I could get more information about the ATT router that is having issues?

oh, and as I said if it is durring peak hrs that is simply ALOT of people ussing the same node and over loading it b/c comcast is to cheap to put up a second node in your area.

It's too consistent for that to be possible, which makes the thought that someone has uncapped their modem all the more seemingly false.
