Pc Games To Play

<div class="IPBDescription">Looking for advice</div> Yar!

I was wondering if you guys can help me. Right now I'm in the process of looking for a good PC game to play aside from NS, but since I've been so involved in this community I've turned a deaf ear to the rest of the PC gaming scene as of late.

My question to you is, what PC games do you suggest I look into? I'm looking for a multiplayer game of some kind with a strong community that's not Anarchy Online, World of Warcraft, or Battlefield 2. Any throughts?

    Wow. That eliminates quite a bit of my reccomendations.

    If you're willing to pay monthly and grind, FFXI has the most rewarding experience of any online MMO I've played. Endgame is absolutely awesome(and hard- few people ever reach level 75 with a class, and even then, finish all the missions? There are a LOT of missions, good story to 'em too, and believe me: Its LONG. But rewarding), and artstyle is great too.

    Guild Wars is a great alternative to WoW, but without a monthly service, but also lacking that 'together' experience WoW has. But some of the best organized PvP you'll ever find!

    Eventually Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas will be getting the multiplayer mod. That'll be nice.

    But BF2 really is worth it.

    I picked up FFXI when it first came out. While the artistry of the game was gorgeous, the grind felt really, really long. I never really felt like I was accomplishing much (admitably I made it only up to level 8).

    Guild Wars is entertaining, but too much of the time I feel rather isolated. :/

    BF2 could be an entertaining game, but it's far too buggy. I tried downloading the demo and I physically could not set up my default control scheme through the menu (right mouse to move forward cleared the move backwards key).

    Thanks for the suggestions though, I'd like to hear more. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Argh, I started to play NS to get <i>away from</i> the counterstrike crowd.

    Play <a href='http://www.groundcontrol2.com' target='_blank'>Ground Control 2</a>!! The game is much more focused on tactics and playstyle than the usual RTS (which is why its the only one I like). There is no base management in this game. You gain units by transporting them in via dropship. The currency to get these units is obtained by capturing points on the map. The more points you have (and the different types, there are two) the more cash you get. Each unit has a secondary mode to put it in as well. Your infantry, for example, are basically weak swiss army knives. They can take out any type of enemy, but rely heavily on location (forests, high ground, building cover) and somewhat on numbers to do it. There are shielding units that protect against artillery fire and heavy tanks who can provide cover by deploying their side armor fowards, making infantry/tank combos certainly deadly.

    Its such a great game!!! I cant write about it all here. But here are some pretty pictures. I think you'll find the visuals are quite nice for your standard RTS game. Its full 360 degrees rotation of camera too, in all angles as well. So you can look up at the sky with the circling planets and burning sun.. ah, so cool.

    <img src='http://www.groundcontrol2.com/modules/xoopsgallery/cache/albums/album02/GCII_Total_War.sized.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' /><img src='http://www.groundcontrol2.com/modules/xoopsgallery/cache/albums/album02/GCII_Viron_Artillery_Closeup.sized.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
    <img src='http://www.groundcontrol2.com/modules/xoopsgallery/cache/albums/album02/Humiliation_Battle_in_Rain.sized.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' /><img src='http://www.groundcontrol2.com/modules/xoopsgallery/cache/albums/album02/helterskelter_Attacked_by_Virons_copy.sized.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

    Edit: Thats not all the units either, there is <i>a lot.</i>. There are two sides you can play as, the humans (whose offical name escapes me) and the alien Virons. They each have different units that you must use differently. Some viron units are only available when you meld two different ones together.. cool. Oh, and throughout the map there are some valuable things to capture, such as the usual chokepoints or perhaps a radar station so you can see your enemies movements across the map.

    Hmm.. not a bad idea. I picked it over over Christmas and poked at it some, but I always found myself longing for the control and playstyle of Ground Control 1. Maybe I should reinstall and poke at it some more though.

    Keep the ideas coming! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Sill boy, there is no skill in CS <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> Just aim at the high torso(chest), the bullets will angle up, and you'll get a headshot.

    I assume you've already got HL2?

    Hm... StarCraft and Diablo are still online, I dunno about Warcraft 3, though. There's a game called Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising that's multiplayer... Also UT2004... You might wanna try Planetside, it's an MMOFPS... Doom 3 has a lot of multiplayer servers, though it's straight DM, there are a lot of mods in development/beta (including co-op mods)...
  • BrackharBrackhar Santa Monica Join Date: 2003-10-26 Member: 22004Members, Constellation, Reinforced - Onos
    HL2 is a definite check. Played through it on normal and hard already, and played through some custom solo campaigns as well (Check out "Das Roboss", quite entertaining). I just wish the mod scene was coming together faster. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    SC, Diablo, and WC3 I've already played out for the most part. I have heard good things about Joint Ops, just never really gotten around to it.

    I have heard that the community for Planetside and UT2004 has kinda died in the past few months though.

    Stock UT2004 isn't really in full swing anymore but a lot of the mods (Alien Swarm, Red Orchestra, etc) are still popular.

    Thanks!

    I always enjoyed the onslaught game mode, but Red Orchestra and Alien Swarm never quite appealed to me. For some reason UT mods have never felt as... well, clean, as Half-Life mods do.

    Theres a Mod called the Trenches or something. Can't remember if it's HL1 or not but I've heard good things.

    My recommendation: moddb.com

    Mods take a long tile, you know. Especially TCs (Total Conversion Mods).

    Call of Duty and Call of Duty: United Offensive.

    Some of the best multiplayer and single player that I can think of. CTF on CoD:UO is awesome, bigger maps and a tank or two thrown in for good measure.

    The original Deus Ex game is loads of fun. They added a multiplayer patch for it, too.

    Daikatana... hmmm... well, I guess I never did *technically* beat it, but that would require me playing through that god-awful green-lit first stage again. Blarg, no thanks.

    Arx Fatalis... one of my friends picked that up cheap and enjoyed it, maybe I should poke at it.

    Keep them coming. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
