Comm Training?

need to practice the basics
I know the maps pretty well, and would like to try comming, but I feel like I need some practice in dropping things quickly, the tech-tree, being more aware of my marines, and how much stuff costs. Just some basic experiance, however, I'd prefer not to comm really horrible games, wasting the time of the marine players, just to get said experiance. So, is there any sort of bot program or anythingto help me do this?

Being able to comm with real marines takes some more skill than bots. You need to be able to make em follow orders and explain em your plans. Interaction with marines is a big part of comming. But for practising hotkeys bots should do fine. When you feel able and confident enough to comm on a pub still anounce your a newbe at comming even if you have the fastest med drop ever.

Don't waste time with bots, just do the following:

    start of the game:

    armory/ip/armlab -> armor 1

dont get a tfac unless you plan to siege, dont go for a lockdown anywhere.

Give good marines meds/ammo, keep getting upgrades.

Always kill the second hive, it takes priority over anything else.

DONT WASTE TIME WITH BOTS, JUST COMM A GAME, AS LONG AS YOU GET UPGRADES MARINES WILL NOT EJECT YOU.

Yeah just get in the chair, drop the structures in base and rts for the rines that leave.

You will definately lose your first few games and you will definately make horrible mistakes (such as accumulating lots of res and forgetting upgrades).

My first few games I generally appeased my rines (dropping them ammo, meds, and guns when they asked)..its not the best strat, but I was the noob and wanted them to atleast have fun.

You can also expect to get ejected a few times, but really who cares?

Here are some things I leanred that helped me:

Find a small noobish server and you will more likely get to com. Small games are much harder to win, but there is much less going on so its easier for practice.

As soon as you get to the ready room continuously press F1 until you joins rines (hopefully you will be the first person to join). Pull out your knife, face the com chair, and start running for it as soon as you can move.

    Other points:

In games when no one coms or the com quits, get in the chair to practice.

Marines usually lose anyway so don't feel bad when you lose. Pro coms lose all the time.

If the aliens are nubs and the rines are competent you might not have to do much. Just drop structures, meds, and ammo. Get upgrades, drop guns. GG.

The only way to learn is by doing it yourself.... so just get in the chair! No fear!

Seeing as no one is really helping you with your request...

a "listenserver" is just the term used to refer to the "Create Game" option on the main screen. So in simple terms...

Open NS, go to Create Game... pick the NS map of your choice, I recommend putting in some password (like fubar) just so no one joins the server (not like they would anyway...)

In the console, type sv_cheats 1, then bigdig (I believe), use GivePoints to add resources without waiting for the RTs.

If I'm not mistaken, the bigdig cheat command will make everything build automatically (also, it builds MUCH more quickly than it otherwise would, obviously... so don't be confused), meaning you don't have to jump out of the chair.

Now you're free to drop structures, examine their cost, etc, see the upgrades, learn the tree, all that good stuff.

You can also practice using the hotkeys to move around the menu.

When you feel comfortable enough with how everything works, do what Real PUA says. Just be ready for the backlash, and ignore it as best as possible.

Remember, no matter what the marines say, you're never wrong (even when you are). ;P

Man, I still do that occasionally, when you get a team that manages to keep every rt alive, all of a sudden your like "300 res, what the ****? Im getting handgrenades"

Is there any servers that welcome newbie comms? I doubt there will be, but still, always good to ask.

Make sure you have a microphone. Trying to type while doing everything else would be a big hassle, and half the people won't see most of what you type. I try to read all of the text messages, but when I get wrapped up in a fight I can easily forget about them.

My 2 cents... and this is coming from a guy who just got over the comming hump.

    1) Learn to be a good backseat comm. You HAVE to know the marine tech tree - what each structure does, res costs are less important (LESS but still important).

Understand basic strategy. Know the counters to all the chambers (DC: weapon ups, MC: motion tracking, SC: build obs everywhere) and what to do if a fade shows up (shotguns, armor1, weapons ups, and attack something).

You should know the map before you get in the chair. Mainly know the good siege spots for each hive, and which chokepoints are good to lock down (generator on nothing, cargo on tantith).

Know a lot of strategy before you even hop in the chair. Theory to practice is a hard transition to make (has to be done with practice), but it's impossible if you don't even know any of the theory!

    2) Here are two guides I wrote with people like you in mind I wish I'd been told these when I started out.

What u said about upgrades is true u could be the worst com in the world but if u get wep and armor 3 and some hmgs/sgs they will never even attempt to eject u because they wont even cares trust me

The first thing to do to be a good comm is to get good at beeing a marine and a alien!

So many noobs say stuff like "hey if i never command i will never get good at it" that's just bs. As a commander you need to know how the game works!

And there are games where you will get ejected even when you do upgrades and anything else good!
Some noob marines measure the skill of the commander on how often he will drop weapons and not on his upgrades. You can have 0/0 upgrades no phasegates at all and they will still love you as long as you drop stuff for them.

Tbh don't care about them! Upgrades are most important! except when aliens go sc first. If alines go sc first all you need is armor1 and 2 hives secured!! if marines do not manage to get 2 hives with help of au1, scanner sweep and medpack support they desserve to loose the round.

As a marine i would prefer weapons3 over weapons0 and mass shotguns.

But like i said, get a feel for the game! You can't be a good comm if you can't be a good marine/gorge/skulk.

You don't learn how to command by goin comm, you learn it by beeing good at NS in every situation!

Bot servers are only good to train your skills at using hotkeys but hey it's very important to hit hotkeys fast and in the right moment!

When you first comm, you know nothing, but when you know what to do and do it for a while, you get use to using the hotkeys and know where they all are and you get faster at doing stuff like giving stuff out and getting stuff.

Me, i got use to using hotkeys because i type without looking at the keyboard most of the times and i played ns quite alot, know i don't have to.

Force yourself to use the hotkeys. When I started comming I naturally selected the buildings and stuff with my mouse, but to learn the hotkeys I forced myself to use em. Now I couldn't tell you which button I pressed to give you that medpack without a moment of thought, just a natural as firing your gun.
