pretty dang good *Spoilers likely*
A pretty good movie all things Tom Cruise aside. While not directly drawing from the book, it contained a surprising number of references and lifted characters. What did you guys things of it?

I haven't seen it yet, but I am confused. What does Spielberg bring to the classic War of the Worlds story that hasn't been done before?

It's in the present day, Omegaman.

I haven't seen it: I hope to do so tomorrow.

    I have a theory:

By continuing to make and remake movies from his books, Hollywood has plans to hook a turbine up to H.G. Well's grave so that he can power the entire city of L.A. while he spins in his grave.

Seriously, the guy wrote 3 good book, and they've managed to make 9 crappy movies out of them...

You know, I didn't even mind Tom Cruise in this one, as much as his recent behavior made me want to.

    I saw E-Th33ph, too. :o

I just got back from seeing it, and honestly it wasn't as good as I thought it was going to be. The special effects were amazing, the acting was great, it was fun to watch, but the story was kind of "lacking" coming from someone who hasn't read the book. It seemed rushed at the end...kind of dissapointing how it ended so fast

I like the clear parralel betwen the crazy guy in the basement of that random house and the artileryman from the book.

Even having read the book, the ending felt a tab abrupt and forced. My friends who hadnt read it had no idea what had just happened.

i havent read the books but i still saw the movie

it was decent at best : great acting , great special affects , good story for the most part but the ending did seem forced and alot of things were left unexplained

like for one thing i still dont get why the aliens died and why their shields went down

The aliens lacked an immune system. So any exposure to any human disease would kill them (Even the common cold) Microbes and Virus's killed off the alien invaders.

And the red weed was IIRC the plant that gave Mars its red colour. At least it was in the audio version.

From the musical (one of the BEST MUSICALS OF ALL TIME WOO!) which is the only form of the story I can remember (although I've heard the original play and I *think* i've read the book at some point), they all catch a cold and die because they don't have any immunity to it. Or some other Earth bound virus.

Or maybe the crows are just really, really vicious.

In the book/songs they directly draw and use human blood as food. They seemed to be using it more as fertilizer in the movie. Either way, much like how Native Americans were decimated by smallpox and other European viruses, the Martians had no resistance to any earth-bound disease.

The red weed, although only briefly mention is simply a Martian plant that’s red.

Two interesting points however. The Martians themselves were definitely not as I had pictured them, they were quite agile.

Additionally, it is never specifically said anywhere that they came from mars or that they were Martians. There was the fade-out with the stoplight at the beginning, and established plotline, but it was never actually said.

Much better than I thought, the special effects saved it for me. I never liked the ending of the tale, and I dreaded how Spielberg would handle it - not so good. As someone said, its too abrupt.

This film does contain my new favourite moment from any film ever though: The railroad crossing scene. I won't spoil it if you haven't seen it, but that just made me feel so good, it worked so well.

I vaguely remember the original movie, but didn't they originally have hovering spaceships with lights on top that shot death rays that vaporized everything?

And seriously, after that Signs fiasco with the water, you'd expect aliens to do some freaking research on the planet they're about to invade.

Yes, Spielbergs' War of the Worlds lacked hover without flapping.

    heh, loved the train scene.

Kinda disapointed that they didnt use the classic "heat ray" but instead some kind of disintegration beam

i liked it.. and ive listened to the audio version and have read the book... maybe it helps to know whats going on? besides.. even if you havent read the book or anything its not hard to realize why the hell they died.. the guy at the end explained it clear and day... however clear that is...

hell i still liked it even though that little girl wouldnt shut her goddam mouth... and the son should have stayed dead.. didnt wanna see him again...

some people will put down anything if it doesnt go exactly as they want it to... ¬_¬
