yes, there is some sorta direct connection between players (thus why you get the connection msgs from players)

Oh, and I just know how to exploit the bad net code

gem, I directly block you b/c I am actualy standing DIRECTLY infront of you, I know that you are gona jink or try to jump over and hit be from behind so I move acordingly

this dosn't work that well in grand melee's b/c I can't turn or else some one else hacks me in the back.

And now I tinhk I am gona have to get a knife for Thansal so that I can cary my heavy weapons and my armour....

yar.

'Tis one of the reasons I have me knife.

I guess the Gunz people are wise to do some P2P thing so they have to use less bandwidth, but the hit detection sucks horribly, and I think that it also makes it more easily hacked the way they have it.

there seems to be some sorta horrible combination of client and server side hit detection.

I realy have NO clue exactly what it is, but it sucks

To be honest my teamwork is pretty good in large games; I was just playing badly because I was testing ideas :3
I noticed the flying cuts weren't working on thansal (everyone else blocked a fair bit too but they weren't stopping me like than so it didn't bother me) so I was rushing off to find him to refine things a bit ^^

After all, I can do flying cuts style on the 'normal' gunz players all day and not really learn anything new; they really can't handle it. I need to use it more on people who can handle it to find out how to strengthen the weaknesses inherent to it :3

hehe.

Oh, and I sorta realized sometihng.

The standard player of GunZ is coming from other Korean MMOs, where as we all come from heavy action games

thus why we so regularly pwn them all

I took the plunge to lvl 21 and my xp per game actually went UP a lot. I just had a 17k xp game...

psyke, when I try and block I usually end up failing to stun them as weird lag happens and they start hitting me anyways. Not to mention that blocking doesn't work against multiple opponents :p

I do have a different style I keep for 1v1 normally but I've been using flying cuts all day long to try and refine it; it's really developed for taking out multiple opponents while minimizing damage or for attacking someone with a gun (which it works well at... or does when they're not one of those laggy people who seem to take 3 times more damage than everyone else thanks to hits not registering :/ )

Try the blocking style against a mass of opponents who're good at sticking together and see how well you do; flying cuts works wonders in those situations :p

gem: I folow the path of:

I gotz lots of styles

My attack style for 1v1 is VERY different then my attack style for massive combat, and again different for team melee.

Also, you need to adapt to different styles.

For people like you (gem) who always attack I just wait it out and block, then hammer it in.

For those that just sit there and block I either circle around or use secondary attacks to break in.

For those that use a sorta "average" attack style... I dono, I just have one that works for that

lol, like I said; I don't just use flying cuts :3
I've just been using it a ton because I need to perfect it and round it off a bit; having someone like you block it when I'm flying around a crowd is a death sentence.
I don't care if it's blocked as long as it doesn't stop me moving ^^

In a serious fight I'd probably just run off and try to seperate you guys from each other as you chase me :p

I can play full on offense or full defence. I might complain about blocking but as long as the person attacking me isn't some laggy jerk I can do it juuuust fine.
For a giggle I noticed some people in one of the games I'd been playing for a while had started trying to copy my flying cuts style. I took a few of them down using it because they hadn't grasped the real trick to the style and when there was one guy left I just stopped and block-shocked him to death. He didn't even see it coming ^^

Once I'm happy with flying cuts I'll probably work on my vulture techniques so my scores in melee DM are better... I always have a fabby kill to death ratio (deaths in single figures; half the time it's 0) but the actual kill numbers aren't great (single digit too -.-).
6 - 0 sounds nice till you notice there's people with 38 kills and stuff. I mean sure most of them die as much as they kill but it still bugs me :p

The blocking is odd... It doesn't always stun them, and the sword doesn't always ping when they actually get stunned. Rather then watching your own sword you just need to watch for when their model does the stunned block animation, y'know?

That's how I was taking people when they were all alone with not much room to run around me.

Yes.

Also the blocking method does work fine for multiple opponents if you can keep them in front of you... The moment you get between them though you're screwed. One hits you in the back while the other hits you int he front and it's just bad.

The block (perfect defense) only works on upper body attacks. It WILL block headshots. It will NOT block legshots. The block only works on attacks that are directly frontal to you. The block does NOT work on setup attacks. It's timed, which means if you don't lower it yourself, you will stop defending after a while and during the period when you sword is out of position, you will be vulnurable. This means a few things:

1. If a person is far away from you, and defending, shoot him in the feet if your weapon allows that sort of accuracy, or just ATTEMPT to shoot him in the feet if not. Otherwise, just close to melee quickly, even if you know the person is using his melee weapon for a setup.

2. If a person is close to you, and hiding behind his defense, setup. If he recovers, then use your mighty blow as he lands. If he doesn't, observe his artful backflip, then shoot him in the face when he lands on his butt. Another good strat is to use your defense too, and when his goes down for a moment, poke him one time with your sword and defend again. This causes most turtles to go on the offensive pretty quickly.

3. If a person is close to you, but is being agressive, try to time your attacks so you don't hit his blocks, and try to get your own hits in to the best of your ability. If you accidently get blocked, block as soon as you recover in order to avoid the incoming mighty blow. In fighting another good, compitent swordsman, however, there is no set strat. Just fight to the best of your ability, and don't do any of the things listed under one and two, and don't over-attack or over-block unless you want to become predictable, which will kill you.

4. LEARN TO RECOVER. If you see the red sprite on your character, get in the habit of recovering by reflex. If you get setup and don't recover in any but a complete nub server, you will either be mighty blowed the moment you stand up, or will get shot in the face and die.

If this sounds complex, this is because the gunz melee combat system is both simple and complex at the same time. Get on a gladiator server with the "bow first" rule implicitly stated in the title, and duel some people.

huh? You sure? When I blocked some guys from the front the first guy's hits triggered the guard and the 2nd guys went through. I never let go of block the whole time :/

I even remember it saying on the site, something about you being vulnerable after deflecting a hit with your sword or something ~blink~

Bah. I'm getting the connection problem... says I'm lagged out. Even though I've got my port forwarding set up right. :b Phoo. Sucks not being able to play.

I think that the sword can only block one attack at a time, and so if someone is attacking with kodachi's and strikes with both of them you get hit once despite the block... And with kodachis I can block two shots close together...

Slayer seems to have this problem with not shooting at people's feet when they are blocking with a sword. When I was playing with Jem and Rave and Thansal earlier Slayer was shooting at someone that was blocking and blah, he died.
It was sad, and I was telling him on teamspeak that he needs to shoot for the feet.

Red, I don't agree with your post, but whatever... It's not all set in stone. There are many different ways to win, many different things you can do. There are some strategies that you may use and may work for you, but then again they may not work for someone else with more/less lag. Basically all it comes down to is you just need to go on Melee servers and figure it out on your own.

I need another game to play... This one's faults are getting to me.
• GeminosityGeminosity :3 Join Date: 2003-09-08 Member: 20667Members
the main fault is that melee doesn't work enmasse unless you jump and the netcode is frigging horrible :p

Also, the knockdown doesn't really do any damage and can't be done in the air so it's a rather poor paper to the rock that is block XD

Bah one thing after I quit NS because of my friends stopped playing, also it not being interesting anymore for some reason (I used to play NS 24/7 after friends stopped playing now I play, once a month, and for only an hour), seems like I don't like FPSs anymore, after reaching level 10 and being excited to use 2 swords, interest started dropping, after getting to level 17, I think I'll stop for now .

Thing is, I am having a little fun playing the game, doesn't seem anything to look forward to in higher levels (like hey I'm 50 now what?), and just DM and stuff like that, doesn't really interest me enough to keep playing . For some odd reason after playing and quitting NS, I stopped liking FPS type games (anything close to being an FPS, with just random killing and highest kills wins!).

QFE

Seriously, every time I hit someone who ISN'T blocking, they somehow get a Massive Strike. Yet if I hit them while they're blocking they most likely won't.

Horrible netcode FTL. The only thing that works for me is that I'm a bit harder to hit (as evident by a few people in Teampeak)

....Thansal and Gem don't have problems hitting me though D:

You know what's bull? When I get a 30 hit combo with my rifle and the other guy doesn't die.
• GeminosityGeminosity :3 Join Date: 2003-09-08 Member: 20667Members
yeah, that and blocking someone, getting a charged hit from it, using the charged hit and then recoiling from a non-existant block while using your charged hit ><

I think tranquil had to put up with me whining that nobody was dying during one deathmatch as well... I could fire as many bullets as I wanted at people and they just wouldn't frigging die yet I seemed to recieve their bullet info pretty darn well -.-

I hit level 21.

The 'Expert' channel is mostly barren, and most of the time I have to move to the free channel to find a game. There's little exicitement in slaughtering Teens and lower, especially with the crummy attitudes most of them give me.

(Usually: "Lvl 21, omg unfair," nevermind that you can both join a channel which level 21s can't access and create games with level limits that lvl 21s can't join.
Or: "If I had your loadout, I'd kick your butt." You might survive a few more bullets, but the level 20+ weapons aren't any more accurate than the level 10 weapons. Try hitting me before saying this. )

My favorite was a game where this clan of Teen level players were recruiting.
I constantly put down every player on the server but one of these clanners who happens to be by far the laggiest player in the game. (Ping averaging 200+ occasionally normal vs rest of server below 100)

So of course, he starts trash talking to me about my terrible aim.

"Haha, you suck, where are you aiming retard? How are you level 21?"

Etcera, etcera. I try the whole logic bit on him, but of course that gets me no where.

(My ratio: somewhere above 12:1, his: 1.5ish:1, everyone else I come in contact with dies almost instantly, yet he still doesn't get it. I explain to him that of course it's more difficult to kill a lagger.)

"Dude, I have cable you idiot. You suck."

(Oh wow, cable, why didn't you say so before. Now that I know you have cable, your lag will magically disappear, oh wait...)

You can be on a T3 connection for all I care, if you're lagging you're lagging.

Pubbies... so... annoying. Hulk Smash!

What are the system requirements for this game? Come next week I'm upgrading, but I'd still like to know whether I could play it now.
• RaVeRaVe Join Date: 2003-06-20 Member: 17538Members
Mmm can we get a name list on the front page? I sort of want to add everyone because as of now, I only have Thansal, Gem and Bijiy. I forgot to add Akedeath and Slayer

The requirements aren't too intensive. Think HL.

And on another note.... Help. Me. Level! (Lv 12 as of now)
And I also need some practise for group melee. I tend to get sandwiched and the pingpong effect starts.

For those who don't know what the pingpong effect is, it's essentially you getting stuck between 2 players, and being hit from one player to the next, without the chance to block. It's eeevil.

hmmm... if I catch you online I might teach you the flying cuts style rave; I kinda came up with it to avoid getting 'teamed' and it's actually 'designed' to take on multiple enemies while taking minimal damage.
On a fun note it's probably the best way to fight a lagger as well :p

Takes a bit of timing, judgement and patience but it's very nasty if used right. Thansal's about the only person who causes me problems in a melee only fight if I just use flying cuts all the time ^^
